Angelina's song choices for this competition were so unconventional. I think that was part of what amazed the judges. They wouldn't expect a little 7-8 y/o girl to select old jazz standards and then sing them with so much emotion and perception. I really enjoy your reactions and look forward to more.

When I hear this song, what comes to my mind is "regret". You can hear the regret dripping from every syllable and phrase as she sings.
I swear that when she sings the word "shiver" in Bohemian Rhapsody, she puts an extra tremor in her vibrato. Followed immediately by an extra vocal fry on "Body's aching all the time" to convey pain. She's so smart.

Angelina's interpretations always make me think, this is how the song is supposed to be sung. She has her own style, but it never sounds forced or arbitrary or off in any way. It is true to the essence of the song. The other thing I want to comment on is the thing that commenters write long essays about but can never quite describe, the Angelina voice itself. It has an ineffable quality about it that just grabs you. The way her vocal chords vibrate and how she forms the sounds as they come out is so haunting and melodic it just pulls you right in. And we're happily hooked :)

You are the first reactor who mention that she binds the words „bang bang“ and „you“ together.
It sounds there is a pause in between but she just brings the „nnn“ down quickly and started the „you“ very quietly and brings it up. Bring you up. Help you up. The opposite of shoot you down. She is hidding lyrics in her voice here in my opinion. With 8!

It is so so hard to imagine that a brand new 8 year old can have the musical intelligence that Angelina has here. But there it is, in spades. Incomprehensible. As we go forward I suspect Angelina will do things that none of us can understand analytically, because nobody has even considered it before. Perhaps a bit like Mozart did. Maybe she already is :-)

Her vibrato is already evident at such a young age. In some performances, you will notice that she sort of signals to a musician. She also gives notes to the musical director, possibly on how she would like a particular arrangement done. That's one way she makes covers her own.

  • @nfpnone8248
    @nfpnone8248 Před 3 lety +3

I might be wrong but I think this is the first song that she directed the arrangement, because it is slowed down to fit her as many other songs after this one have been also, it’s like her signature.
That alone is what makes her a prodigy, yes her voice is phenomenal, but it’s her command over her artistry which is extraordinary, especially given the fact she has been doing it since she was 7 of 8 years old.

Her breath control is incredible, and apparently effortless. I'm noticing that more and more as I watch her perform. I think her arrangements take advantage of that skill, and it's part of what helps her renditions rise above the rest. One thing I noticed In the NGT performances is her willingness to start singing within seconds not reaching the podium. It may be something she does to cope with nerves, but I don't think I've ever seen her nervous on stage.

She's definitely 8 here. A bit of history: This song was written by Sonny Bono (1966) for his then wife Cher. She had a hit that year with a more upbeat version accompanied by a band. Later that year it was covered by Nancy Sinatra. She slowed it down and was accompanied by just a guitar, and she had an even bigger hit. Angelina is covering Nancy's version, albeit a much shorter rendition (time restrictions on performances). I believe that after this performance in the semi's, the contest was over. She went on to garner almost half of all the votes to win the show by a landslide. It was after this performance that it was obvious she was destined for stardom. Thanks for another great reaction Josh, to the fabulous Angelina. 😊💕

You will notice that there is a common denominator when Angelina re-arranges a song and that is she has a proclivity toward slowing the tempo down. Personally, I think her intuition to do so is impeccable. There is another positive aspect of Angelina’s slowing the tempo down and that is I pay greater attention to the lyrics. More often than not I tend to focus on the melody of songs. With Angelina I listen to the lyrics as well as the melody when she sings.

Yes, you are right when you speculate that she has been involved with the arrangement and stage show. There's a video of her in a pre performance meeting with the musicians in this competition where she tries to get her ideas acknowledged. She has some difficulties getting heard by the musicians however (I mean no disrespect to those guys, I mean at this point she was a totally unknown 7 year old girl with a single front tooth, and they are studio pros after all) and you can see her getting a bit frustrated with them... LOL! Just a couple of years later though she is known by musicians as "The Boss". A very, very respectful and humble boss of course (it's Angelina we are talking about after all) but she knows what she wants. You can actually see her at the tender age of 9 giving the leader of the jazz band that plays on her "I put a spell on you" video a note with her "wishes" as she calls them. (then you see the band leader smile at that humble phrasing)... She is 14 now, I simply can't fathom how good she will be when she 24... Her future is so bright she's gonna have to start wearing shades soon...lol!

Part of Angelina’s way of making songs her own is the way she begins. As in Bang, Bang, Bohemian Rhapsody, Yellow Brick Road, and many others, her opening is quiet and understated, drawing you in so that you’re focusing on her voice. You’re leaning in, mentally, to hear the quiet low vocal, setting the stage for the rest of the performance. Just like her later performances on AGT, she has the audience silent and mesmerized. You don’t want to miss a thing. You don’t want to applaud during Bang, Bang because the mood she sets just rivets you’re attention.
This song threw me over the edge, even though I was impressed earlier. I liked it when Cher and Nancy Sinatra did it, but if you had only the audio of all three performances, Angelina’s captures the melancholy perfectly. In my mind, eight year old Angelina outsings both of them. I’ve never heard any singer remotely as good as Angelina across so many genres. She’s once in a lifetime.

This song actually wasn't originally by Nancy Sinatra but by Cher who hit #2 with the original song. Nancy's version was never an official single but got a huge push from being a cult favorite when it was included in the Kill Bill Soundtrack. Sonny Bono wrote the song for Cher after she told him about her first broken heart. It seems a little boy Cher played cowboys with as a little girl, and dreamed of marrying one day as little girls sometimes do, just moved on to other friends and left her alone with a broken heart.

How can someone at her age, have a unique style, kids at that age are either mimic or copy other singers, and most sing either disney songs or light pop. Even if introduced to jazz at a very young age, when is the time to create a unique and intricate style, does it just come out of the ether?

She was born with a love for music. Some children are. She was just given way more gifts and soul in this area than pretty much anyone.

You mention Angelina looks at the guitarist to sync something. In the next song she looks over at the trumpeter, and I feel fairly confident she is not happy with something he did.

In my opinion, while Nancy Sinatra sings that song beautifully, her vocal texture doesn't possess the vibrational sadness, gravity and painful hurt that Angelina inherently uses at will.
Therefore, what distinguishes her from other vocalists is her natural aptitute to convey emotions.
It is mostly by the use of her innate gift of emotional connection with the listener that she is, in her own right, more than a talented singer: she is a vocal artist.
And her artistic instinct and the pure logic explain why she adapts part of the original lyrics: to convey that emotional bound, to avoid the obvious anachronism and to preserve the credibility of the story.
When she sings "chasing birds around", these three words illuminate our mental screen with images carrying part of our childhood plays.
What you describe, Josh, as her own style - precisely, here, the lingering of certain sounds - is what I understand to be the particular vibrational frequency of her vocal music.
Are we both talking about the same natural quality of her vocals?
    Thank you so much!

    Again ...Love the perspective.
Strange this debate about her age though. She herself said that she won the competition at age 7....so if she is performing here at said competition which happens within one year then she would be 7 wouldn't she?

Awesome reaction, the more people know about music and singing, the more the appreciate this little genius. You are spot on with regards to her role in the arrangement, and you will be amazed and amused by this little video czcams.com/video/BSm-oMgVCo8/video.html shot by her grandma when they worked on the arrangement for Summertime (prior to the 2014 Norway got Talent) performance. No question who is the boss :)

What she did was just made is the Guitar alone. On that Bass-line quivering, just brought out emotions. Sonny n Cheri . Nancy Sinatra, and anyone else, had too much going on behind them. And theirs were at a faster pace

  • @toraguchitoraguchi9154

This song was originally sung by Cher, not Nancy Sinatra.
