- The DDJ-REV5 is a super-powerful performance DJ controller, with just about every feature you’d want for playing accomplished open-format DJ sets using Serato DJ Pro. If you liked the look of the REV7, but wanted CDJ-style jogwheels, this is for you, and it brings new features to the table not even on that unit (such as Piano Play and Auto Beat Transition, which we demo fully). Not sure if it's the best DJ controller for your set-up? Watch on for our in-depth review + demo..

This is by far the best, in-depth review of the Rev5.
Thank you!
The auto transition with advanced controls really pushes us towards the era of both being able to do really flexible creative open format stuff while simultaneously showing how close we are to being obsolete lol. It's a little bittersweet.
The first drum computer created a huge controversy. Drum computers have perfect rhythm and are superior to humans in every way, right? Soon all drummers will be replaced by computers! Haha obviously NOT! I still enjoy listening to live bands.
@@robertschnobert9090live bands still exist of course, but the vast majority of published music today is sampled and synthetic drums. Think about all the hip hop, pop, and dance music music eclipsing music with a live drummer. I would surmise that 95% of drums today in music were not actually recorded live.
@@Positive_Tea yeah, I prefer electronic music with samples. But the point is that drums still exist and I think drums are awesome! Change is inevitable. Folk songs were displaced by chamber music. Chamber music was displaced by radio DJs. Radio DJs were displaced by hifi systems and records. Records were replaced by tapes and eventually CDs. The list goes on and on and on, but you can still sing folk songs or listen to radio if you want. The old stuff is still alive, it's just not as popular anymore and that's okay. 🌈
I just got my Rev 5 yesterday. Man...coming from an DDJ-SB3, it's kinda overwhelming. Thanks for having this video. I'm going to be watching this video a couple times. Thanks for a very comprehensive explanation of features.
Glad I could help!
Pioneer you won’t see heaven 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 you have killed the competition. This is awesome 👏👏👏
Pioneer just: redid their entire line of controllers, bought Serato and created a crazy new turntable. A lot of people talk negatively about Pioneer, especially in regards to price but some of those new controllers are entry level and are bringing new features to that part of the market.
Don’t think anyone can knock their work rate
@@digitaldjtipsnumark all in one for less than 1000 and denon
Personally this is an awesome price and if you notice of late pioneer actually has been coming in cheaper than the competition for the first time... Check the FLX10 and Rane Four
I just got the Rev 5 yesterday thanks for this tutorial very helpful
You're welcome
Thanks for this video! So informative, I’m a beginner with a Rev 5, and this really helps! Very grateful!
Glad it was helpful!
Stems is a game changer on a piece of kit like this oh and Phil you may need to update your book with what’s happening out there mind you the DJ equipment scene is moving so quick it’s a job to keep up with it
Book is due an update in the next year or two, the vast majority of it never changes though!
Pioneer for sure has sent NI over the cliff in the DJ market. I've been loyal to Traktor for MANY YEARS but its gear like this that's going to make me transition back to Serato because NI just wont get off their ass and make something new and exciting like this! Anyway, another great vid, Phil, I've watched ur vid FOUR TIMES just to see how you ROCKED the demo of the auto beat transition. None of the other reviewers have rocked using it like you have! Again, great info brother! 👏🏿
Thanks for the kind words
We for real thirsty for New Tech haha

this one best video seen so far and there aren't many to me with a full breakdown
Glad to help
I really like the automatic tempo transitions! I can see myself using those, particularly when making small jumps between songs or when transitioning during non-repetitive moments in both tracks. Remember that no matter how cool a killer feature on a controller is, perceptive members of the crowd will know when you're overusing it. Sometimes it's not the right fit. :D
Yeah less is definitely more
Respect Phil you're the man. Love the reviews
Much appreciated
Seriously think the Rev7 needs a refresh or mk2 very soon now with a rework Rekordbox, Stems, dual layers and the some of the other things this unit has introduced. I would defo pick one up, i seriously want moving platters and Paddle effects unit for Rekordbox.
Really great in depth Review as well Phil, well done :)
Maybe it’s coming!
Excellent breakdown...I'm hoping pioneer comes out with best combined features of both rev5 & rev7
That would be cool!
This has quite a few additional controls over the FLX10. My FLX10 is about a month away from arrival, and this now has me thinking if as a multiformat DJ I might be better off with the Rev 5. I like the flexibility of playing both with Rekordbox and Serato on the FLX10, and having additional faders for channel 3 and 4. But as a keyboardist, that Piano Play and extra stems buttons on the Rev 5 looks amazing!
Serato? REV5. Rekordbox? FLX10
@digitaldjtips totally agree. As a mainly serato user I'm getting the Rev 5 but still glad that most of the layout is still decent with rekordbox. While the FLX 10 just seems to include serato but is 100% for rekordbox
If this was a Dedicated Rekordbox controller, SOLD!
I just bought this and love it, went from 1200s to this and am going to embrace the technology. My main reason for buying is auto BPM and stems. Makes life so much more easier .
Welcome to the digital club 🤣
I'm thinking of doing the same. 1210s currently for house music. I'm 53 by the way 😊.
Oh that automation feature is cool. And a great explanation of all the possibilities, I missed that by others previewing it.
One thing no-one addressed is how Rekordbox would handle the stems buttons with melody and bass as it only has "Instruments", combining Melody & bass.
If they would improve Rekordbox to also have 4 track stems separated I wonder how they would implement that on the DDJ-FLX10 with only 3 buttons.
Rekordbox is likely to stick with the three stems I’d guess
thank you for a simple and logical review!
You're welcome
Almost feels like a REV7 Mk2 might be coming. I’m torn between the two. The REV7 needs this type of Stem control. And of course, Auto BPM transition.
Love the review I wanna pre-order me a Rev-5 but I have one special request that jam from Tico In the Rain ☔️ I can’t find it anywhere at least here in the US n I’m a member of most DJ Record 📀pools, it’s an instant classic…🎙️🎧🎤💯📻🙏🏼💤🎼👍🏻love all your videos 🎧💯😎🎙️🎤😀📲🚉📻👍🏻
Thank you 🙏🏾
Great Video as usual. please send me the info on all the tracks featured in this video please. Thanks
SHEESH! ANOTHER ANOTHER NOTHER CONTROLLER?!? The Rev and Flx own this decade?
Would be cool to play chord in piano mode!! That would be a dope update. Great way to get piano people into the DJ world!
That would be cool!
@@digitaldjtips makes sense
this one is on point
Great video! Quick question: Do you know if you have to purchase a serato expansion package to activate the pitch play and piano play features?
Isn't that the "smart fade" feature from the flx 4? :) I just bought your book, and it's very helpful! Thank you so much!
Yes, similar. Thank you!
Hi Phil, thank you for the great review (as always) but Pioneerd DJ normally comes with 3 new products on a row. What can we expect next week ??? The XDJ-XZ2 ???
Never thought of it that way!
I was planning on the REV7, but the Rev5 features and weight has me sold. Wanting the Rev7 became lukewarm after Serato released stems. I'm sure the Rev7 MKII will have more even more features.
Maybe!
Amazing run down!! I can't seem to find this though: Is there a way to keep the EQ knobs set to control Stems, or would you need to switch the EQ knobs to Stems mode for every new song that is loaded up? Cheers!
I see they have improved upon the Smart Fader from something like the DDJ-FLX4, both are very interesting features
Yes, they are!
@@digitaldjtipscan you replace the cross fader? Bet you can't.
Thank you! It arrived today!
And i have the rev7 also.
But im selling it now. 🙂
Why did you decide to switch from REV7 to REV5?
@@digitaldjtips for the cdj style platters. Rev7 is one of the best controllers out there, but i was not a fan of the motorized platters 😆
Hi Phil love the video, I want to another usb-c for my second computer is there a specific type I need or any usb-c to usb-c will do
As long as the cable fits it should work.
I really like it! Especially for open format djing. Could get really creative. Just a couple questions.... How is the build, does it feel plasticy or robust? Can you change the information on the platters screen so you can see the full waveform or see the art work and relapse time and remaining? How much does it cost and when will it be on the market?
$1099 and from what Cleveland Terry said, it shows the deck number and indicator only. Could be updated before release.
You cannot change the screen. Mid-range build.
I currently own the DDJ-1000-SRT. I really like this (especially the mixer section) but the fact that there’s no on board effects is a deal breaker for me 😢. I need the ability to add a slight echo tail on the mic so it doesn’t sound flat
I use an external mixer to get great mic effects
Pioneer stepping up
I was going to get the flx6 but looks like i’m going for the rev5. I currently have the numark mixtrack pro fx, i need a challenge and upgrade
Definitely do not "upgrade" to the FLX6, it is an entry level controller in a big box so would not really represent an upgrade. The REV5 is a much better bet.
The Auto BPM Transition feature looks a bit like a more advanced version of Smart Fader from the Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX4
Yeah it sort of is.
Hi,
I am a big fan of watching dj's perform their sets. James Hype one of my most favorite keeps breaking mixers. Can you explain how he does it? He cliames somthing about BPM drops. I would love to know how he does that and why the Pioneer mixer he uses does not support his range.
Thank you
There is a technical glitch that affects the way James plays on the new CDJs but it is a very technical things that they are working to resolve
thanks phil
You’re welcome
I think the The Rev 5 has put a massive stop to the Hype of the Hercules Inpulse t7. Just based on better crossfader. I was looking at the t7 and going eventually upgrade the crossfader, but I reckon that make them around the same price. However the inputs and outputs are better on the Pioneer.
And static vs motorised jogs of course
Nope, nothing and I mean nothing is touching the Hercules T7. While the rev5 is dope and may have slightly better input options, there is no comparison. Tried the T7 for myself at Expo, and it is 🔥
Not to mention the T7 is close to half the price of the rev5
How can the echo out be applied to the dedicated stems buttons? I can only get it to echo in pad mode.
They took away being able to use slicer as stems & now you gotta shift and press the pad.
Thus slows me down, especially since I juggle (quick mix) alot of songs
I wonder where are the beatjump controls?
Thanks for a well balanced review Phil. I suspect this will be a very well selling the controller. In my mind any great product solves a problem for the user.
The Auto Bpm transition opens so many doors in terms of what you can play next.
You need 8 pairs of hands to do what that does.
I am a house / techno DJ who uses Traktor and this has really got my attention.
Yes it is definitely a useful feature!
I love using Traktor also but damn it, NI has left us hanging for soooo loong, they're not doing anything exciting any more. Ur right, this unit has my attention so much that I've watched EVERY video on it since it came out!
@@djceejaay That's right bro!
Exactly, well said
You called it the "Rane 5" and "Rane 7" near the end Phil. Hard to keep up with all the gear you review I guess. 🤤
Good god you’re right! Yeah hard to keep up 😂
I wished you showed how the output would sound if you pressed 2 pads at the same time while in piano play mode. Just need to confirm that chords can be played.
They cannot sadly
How do you set the sync function when using auto bpm transition?
Kind of a stupid question but I’m trying to think ahead here haha. Is the rev5 the same size as the rev7, specifically would it fit in a rev7 flight case for example, or should I wait for a rev5 specific case to come out? Thanks!
Wait
Wish they made a controller with motorised jogwheel and Stems.
so is the DDJ line their battle style and the flx line their club dj style controllers? I like the flx10 over this
Seems to be
This looks like the best controller on the market. I want to know how the build quality is compared to Rev 7 and other controllers in the same range.
Kind of “mid table” build quality, better than entry level but not quite REV7.
Nice new piece of kit. Pioneer really are taking over the planet… Love for them to include a feature where you could used stems to mute certain humans beings! 😂
Did you mean drunk requests or drakeless edits on the fly? Hmm now that i think about it, I suppose both are inherently anti-drake measures..
😂
5:52 I have a question here: When you turn off the sync button for breaking down the transition on a BPM Level you choose manual, you have to hit the Play button at the right time, isn't it? Because at this point there is no sync.
Without sync, yes, timing becomes important.
Coming soon !!!
DDJ REV 6 - Connects to chatgp wirelessly, so AI can select the tunes for you, and mix them too, all you have to do is look pretty and chat shyte on the mic !!!
Sounds good! 😉
I own a Rev1 but thinking of buying a FLX10 or this new controller. Can you make a size comparison of the Rev5 & Rev1 and the difference between the Rev5 and FLX10
Rev5 dwarfs the rev1 in size. Flx10 is club style, rev5 is battle dj style.
My country has limited stock or places you can buy pioneer gear... would be nice to have a visualised difference, nobody seems to have these size comparisons... us big hand people actually consider the size when buying things.
The Rane Four reigns supreme for a Stems Serato controller
It is indeed a great controller
@@digitaldjtipsI’m stuck between them two rane 4 or rev 5 🤦🏾♂️
I miss the Stop Funktion. If you Press the start/Stop knob, it starts or stops directly. But why, can i Change it?
not sure what you're saying here?
Can this unit charge my laptop from the usb-c connector? Or can my laptop power this unit just like the DDJ-SR2 without having it plugged into a wall socket?
No it needs to be plugged in
This may Not be the right place to ask but is anyone else having sound distortion issues with the Rev5? after dj like 3hrs the sound gets screechy and distorted. I dont have this issue on any other device.
Does it have STEM effects? Does the jogs have the LED ring that lights up?
No and no
This is like a flx6 but of course an upgraded version of rev7 but cheaper quality. Probably they will make a ddj rev9 of 4 channels and premium. They always do that so i will wait for that and meanwhile use my rane four until pioneer gets it right
nah I reckon the flx 10 is the equivalent of a rev 9 without spinning platters
I own the Rev 7 and I’ve been having platter issues for a while now. I’m thinking this guy might replace it
Motorised platters aren't for everyone
Bro. Am I selling my FLX10. To get this? Seems like this is a much easier learning curve.
Not much in it really
Are the platters on REV5 pressure sensitive like the 1000SRT
Yes
Does the controller unlock access to Serato Pro or do I need to purchase a license separately?
It unlocks access
Name of song on left deck please.
I guess I'm pretty shallow but the feature that appeals to me most is the red lights on the joggs 😂
Ha ha 😝
I’ve heard that scratching on this May result in a screeching sound defect. Is that something that an update can fix?
We've never heard that
for me theres missing a comparison to how FLX-10 is doing it. Why only mentioning Rane 4 when theres another big competitor of the same company.
This is primarily a Serato controller, FLX10 is primarily Rekordbox.
I’m having issues with my piano roll not activating.. am I doing it wrong or??? I push and hold shift and piano but nothing changes.. HELP!
Sorry, not sure what might be causing that
I have been using the DDJ400 with rekordbox, to use the piano and other effects and STEMS do I need to change to serrato or are the all available with Rekordbox. And if yoiu have a link I can get some good samplers I would be thankful. I dont have any.
This is a Serato controller, so yes, you'd need to use it with Serato
Thankyou for that, do you mean to use the piano mode you need to use serato. Because the controller is actually made to be useable with both serato and Rekordbox.
when you put the stem button on solo, does it stay on it? or does it reset to mute every time you load a new track?
It resets on track load (I believe)
@@digitaldjtips ah no !
i think my rev 5 is defective when i play on it for around 2 hours it starts to make a screeching noise and goes in and out and when i just let the audio play it just keeps screeching. it only happens when i play for around 2 hours and i’ve used it 3 times since i got it
That doesn't sound good! Definitely something going wrong, hard to guess what though.
@@digitaldjtips yea planning to return it and get a new one
how's the quality of those jogwheels? same as FLX6?
Yeah similar
So glad Pioneer is finally paying more attention to STEMS. Maybe the whole Pioneer community is finally realizing that STEMS can take your set to 10X levels. Just very concerned about all the negative posts . . . and there were many . . . that was all over social media regarding so many quality defects on the Opus Quad. Not the topic of discussion here, I know, but still concerning for such a high end "designer" looking controller. Could Pioneer perhaps give any feedback regarding this? Surely they must have recieved the complaints? This is NOT GOOD for Pioneer....just saying. Still love the brand. 🤜🏻💥🤛🏻
Aaaand why is it battle layout?
Play Phil's piano riffs over a 125bpm breakbeat and you'll get a 90's hardcore rave track.
You would indeed 😉
Would you get this if you use rekordbox?
It is a Rekordbox controller, yes.
REV6 that includes the additional inputs?
Perhaps
Are Pioneer going to bring these features to a standalone battle mixer anytime soon!?
We do not know that!
Hopefully not as I’m about to buy an S11! 🫣
It would be cool if opposite deck started playing automatically as soon as you hit BPM PLAY BUTTON… to avoid hitting 2 buttons at same time.
Is it capacitive touch or it has mechanic platters? Thanks
Mechanical
@@digitaldjtips Thanks.I bought the controller but it doesen't work on my Macbook Pro mid 2012. I can't install any driver (on Pioneer website I found a driver but I can't install it). Can you help me? Thanks
How is the sound output on the rev 5?
Fine
Stop saying Rane 7 you are confusing me :)
Or are you letting the Cat out of the Bag?
Sorry slip of the tongue!
Can it be used with Virtual dj ??
Yes I used it with Virtual DJ yesterday.
I'm waiting on a All in One, with moving platters... Pioneer is that too much to ask for??
We’d love to see such a thing too
Will it work with VDJ?
Soon enough we reckon
After using the Rev 7 for a while now I got so used to using the STMES feature under the ROLL. Can I assume now that there's a dedicated stems button (which you have to hold shift each time....) that I won't be able to do it under roll? Is that something I can midi map? It's almost been like muscle memory to switch to roll to do stems. I love the other features for sure just curious that's all.
You can map the Stems button to the upper 4 Pads
If u wannna give up ur rev 7 for this pleassdssssssssssse let me know
Pioneer got everyone on choke hold 😅
Like Denon better
Your wallet by the balls 😂
I really like it - for about $100 more Pioneer could have given us on-board effects. I'm not a fan of Serato software effects.
Really? We think they sound great!
It just baffles me that pioneer keeps churning new products as of late but cannot maintain an ample supply on their current products.
I think they know something we don’t-like the date of the end of the world! 😂
I think this controller is expensive for $1099
The performance pads are smaller and it doesn't have onboard FX and the FX lever is smaller so why will it be 4 figures controller? It's supposed to be sold at $699
We agree it is a little pricey
Pioneer : Here's our commercial for the latest DJ controller!
Phil 1 seconds later : Here's our full review 🤣
😎
I mean, they could just put the screens om top just like you outlime om the video Phil.Hpw hard can it be for Pioneer to make screens, pr at least some slot for pad.. I'm just scratching my head...Iand there is clealy space for four track control, and its a feature.. I would not have guessed it unless you pointed that out.... IT seems like such a cool mixer, but only if you want to be a laptop DJ.. Its not even funny...
I love pioneer compare other controllers
why is pioneer scared to put cdj3000 platters on a controller like this or the flx10..they are being cheap
I'm not a fan of USB powered. Internal PSU or Outboard works for me.
All depends on the gear doesn't it? It's not a problem on lower powered/smaller electrical items.
???
