The Railway Tunnel of Decay - Lydgate Disused and Abandoned Explore
Join me as i venture into Lydgate Railway Tunnel, one of the most messiest and smelliest i have ever been inside!
1332 yards in length and closed back in 1964, Lydgate Tunnel lays abandoned an inactive and almost forgotten by most and many.
In this explore we bring her back to life, lighting Lydgate Tunnel as best as we can to show you what is hidden below the Village of Lydgate for all to see.

Those air shafts are works of art. The one with the water coming in was almost hypnotizing.
Thanks very much. Glad you enjoyed it
Amazing colours in the bricks. What a fab tunnel. As always loved the music. Well done Ant. Another brilliant video. Thank you.
Great video again Ant! 👏
My mother's uncle worked as a ganger on that line, including the Lydgate tunnel in the 1950s until the line closed.
I remember him telling us that even at that time the tunnel was a hell hole to work in.
Always wet, damp and freezing!
I feel it was maybe the wettest I have ever been through. Only beaten by Harecastle I think
Wow that was awesome. A very artistic tunnel, best I’ve seen. Thanks for the share Ant. Please take care
Thank you for today’s video. Always look forward to them. Thanks to Richard for the camera section. See you on the next. Cheers Ant & Richard. ❤❤😊😊🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it Martin as always 😊😊
yay he's in Grotton. Grew up there as a kid. been in that tunnel a lot. great vid. seems its getting worse inside, was a bog when i was a kid 40 yrs ago!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks very much for watching
Slick work once again. A Chanel that deserves far more subscribers.
Very kind thank you 🙂
Interesting tunnel explore. Beneath all the gunge, you stll have to admire the skills which went into the making of these underground arteries, particularly around the base of the airshafts. Reopening more of them to walkers and hikers would be a good move, if they were part of a network or nature reserve.
I feel a lot of these tunnels could be reused. I felt like those in Nottingham would be ideal for cyclist and pedestrians into the city
Hello, I think your shots of access shaft No.1 were some of the best that you have ever taken, it was almost like looking up into a cathedral's dome with the various colours and shapes, you should be proud of yourself, thanks for all your good work, it is much appreciated . Rodger.
Thank you for watching Rodger and your kind words. I'm quite pleased with how I've been lighting them up recently 😁
The air shafts are a work of art in themselves just the pressure of the arch and the granite structure giving it a firm purchase and as if it’s defying gravity
done a few old railway tunnels in my time lydgate is not far from were i live i have been inside thank you for the explore and indepth walk .
Great video - a most interesting tunnel. Wish the line were open again.
Cheers Simon thanks for watching
Nice video Ant, seen inside this tunnel before but your pics are stunning and I love the music too. Thanks again. Nice to see you in my neck of the woods. Chris.
Seems to have been cobbled together from whatever they could lay there hands on at the time. Interesting about the cable carriers being different from other tunnels. Rice and poppadoms with mine please!!😂😂😂
Plenty of rice should soon soak it all up 😂
Iv found a great line for you to follow from Leicester to Lutterworth runs parallel to the M1 loads of old bridges and banking always thought what it was like but I only followed it along the motorway in my truck
Another great vid. Nice and relaxing to watch and I loved the synth music too, great choice.
Glad you enjoyed it thank you very much ☺️
The portal looks as if it not long for this world. Thank you as always for a very interesting video.
That bricked up section of the portal looks a little weak. Thanks very much for watching
As always a very interesting and well shot video, thank you. I wonder if the concrete base you pointed out was a ground signal, assuming the shunting activity from the sidings extended that far ??
I imagine it probably was something like that. Thanks very much for watching 😊
Thanks Ant. Been off grid for a coupla days! Wonderful vid mate!
Cheers Marc. Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Superb video as always ant thank you!
Thanks very much Mike 🙂
A great tunnel explore ,the wooden post with metal attatched could have been part of a "gong" which when a train went over it hit a lever which hit a metal gong to allow pw workers too know a train was coming
Thats my thinking as well. They were used to tell the driver where to look out for a signal. Usually a distant signal which either show green or yellow, warning that there is a stop signal ahead
another great find ant
Thank you very much Chris
Great video, cheers
Thanks very much John
Great video I'm doing the tunnel next few weeks what torch 🔦 and video you are using cheers mark's railway trails 👍😊 great video keep up great work
Lovely shots of the shafts..like looking at ancient mosaics. Very enjoyable thank you.
Thanks very much Tim
The shots of the four shafts were spectacular. Loved the brickwork. Looking forward to making my way back to the UK in June/July. Great vid. Cheers, Ant. 🤓🏴
Thanks very much Kim. I was rather happy with the lighting on this occasion. I'll see you in a few months 😊
Nice work Ant,thanks lad
Cheers Simon
Another great video Ant, thanks to Richard too. 😊
Pleased you enjoyed it 😊
Great video again Ant. Love the Blade Runneresque kind of music. Adds to the atmosphere 👍🏻
Cheers very much. I do love a bit of eerie Synth
loving your videos
keep them coming I live in Wrexham and we haven't got any thing like this
Thanks Stephen I'll have to look into if I can find something around your way
There was a ventilation shaft in the field directly behind my house in Grasscroft . But was filled in many years ago.
I remember going sledging in the field to the west of the church as a kid and being told to roll off before we ended up in the shaft 😂
This should be reopened as a cycle track and walkway. I’m interested to know how you got in, because I had a look at this tunnel some years ago and couldn’t get in at either end!
The gate looks like it's been off for many months covered in leaves and mulch
The throughing is for telephone cables that ran between signal boxes
Brilliant thank you 🙂
@@TrekkingExploration I had to think about it, but my fellow signaller explained it 😊
all that orange/braun rusty leaching out onto the ground, would indicate whatever is behind the bricks is metal in origin.
Thanks very much for watching Jeffrey
Hiya - Traffic cones when there is no traffic- what??? 🤔🚂🚂🚂
Single file tunnel trekking 😂
could you do one in Wiagn as its full of old mines and old railway walks
I'll have a look at some maps see what's about
@@TrekkingExploration I've walked along them years ago and there was still rails down but because I was young I didn't take notice of any relics
Was this one of Dr Beechings cuts that closed this line down?
I think this one closed before then
@@TrekkingExploration thanks for replying much appreciated 👍👍
Do you think all these tunnels were always used for Trains?
And for people to walk part way along without proper foot ware !
Yep and for other people to be pushed along in a wheelbarrow
Not always, sometimes the dinosaurs roamed them, sometimes the fish would swim through them to get from one lake to another
It’s pronounced Mozzlee not Moseley 🫣
Cool
@@TrekkingExploration as a footnote, the eastern portal is terribly overgrown. Lived there all my life and never seen it clear. Saying on another YT channel, there is a sentence in a recent Manchester Metrolink report that using this tunnel was a long term potential plan. It’s on Metrolink future developments Wikipedia page
What a great tunnel once again does any one know where this is area etc how to get to it thanks
