A very brave exploration! Had you been alone and got stuck in the smaller tunnel, we would never have seen this or any more of your videos. The photos you included of the main tunnel were excellent, and seem to have been perfectly exposed. Thanks for all of it!
Brilliant explore. You are a brave man going through that other tunnel leading to the cliff. But it certainly made for thrilling viewing. Thank you for putting your time into all of this and to share it with us.
Well done Ant for pushing all the way through that little tunnel - that was amazing to see - even thou you did get wet feet!!! 😉🚂🚂🚂
We did both tunnels 2016 and saw the adit in Kettleness tunnel, but only dared go part way in. Glad you went all the way through so we could see how and where it comes out. Loved the video boys!
As wonderful as this video, with its compelling music your still photography is absolutely awesome
The time and commitment you put into these adventures are appreciated Ant. Fascinating video as always 👍🏻
Hi Ant, I haven’t been commenting lately, I don’t know what else to say about the amazing video quality, research and ideal music. All the best.
That was my stomping ground for a long time when I was young, but I never got to go in the tunnels from Sandsend to Kettleness. That was over 40 years ago. Always wanted to though. Great to see this.
This would have been number one vintage railway journey with such views ...
Something about these videos Ant. They’re so nostalgic. I’ve watched since you went to ladybower a few months back. Now I can’t wait for the next one to drop
Very interesting video. The side tunnel reminds me of the days when I used to explore old abandoned mine workings and having to crawl in places. A fascinating old railway tunnel in quite some location.
It was not so long ago I looked at both tunnels as much as I could from Google and old maps. Living abroad I can't do much else, so your video was absolutely perfect. Here in DK, where I live, we don't have tunnels or viaducts as we are more flat, so your videos are so interesting.
That was spell binding Ant, just amazing. Thank you and take care
Yeah thats fantastic. The old British tunnels have the best work inside i think!
Today we did the kettleness to Sandsend walk. Wasn't intending to enter the tunnel but we did. The only light we had was our phones. I'm glad of your video, I can use it to show people where we went. My son went in the little tunnel.
Another fantastic video Ant. For older viewers like myself this is the only way to see these places and imagine the experience of the cramped conditions of the tunnel in the tunnel. Many thanks.
Just watched your video today. A great travel back in time. Thanks for the weekly travel back in time. Enjoy the weekend, cheers Ant! 😊
Excellent video..very enjoyable with a good laugh at the end. Must say too..just loved your "synthesizer" sound track for this one as well. All the best.
Great vid Ant. Thanks for sharing. Looked like a great explore. Don’t suppose Richard sent a postcard from his grand trip….
Fabulous and thanks for taking the trouble to take us through the adit
What a brilliant video. How on earth did they manage to move all the stone and build such a lovely tunnel, the stonework was beautiful. You will need to start and put a hard hat on as some brickwork was scary, especially when you went through the tunnel to the cliff edge.
I really enjoy watching these. Keep safe.
I really loved this explore Ant with all the old maps, too. I was amazed to see that adit was not purposely collapsed. I'm interested to see how you get your pictures. Is it light painting, or do you have a large lumen torch with a long exposure? Another great vlog, thanks for sharing.
Absolutely brilliant, thanks for all your effort in making these video's
Walked these about thirty years ago ,they are slowly decaying ,great video
Lovely video again, Ant. I remember both tunnels so well from when we lived in the moors up there. Explored all that line (and Grinkle tunnel too!) Looking forward to when you do Sandsend.
Amazing! I've seen videos on these tunnels before, and they've mentioned the adits, but no-one yet has braved the crawl to the outside on any of the videos I've watched. Fantastic job - I've been dying to know what it was like on the outside 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it Bill and thanks for watching. Sandsend Tunnel shall follow next week
Top vid Ant, great research, fantastic tunnel and adit - you don't want to come out of that one in a rush!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Magnificent! another brilliant video continuing your exploration of an awesome railway.Get your tin hat on!
Wow, wow, wow!! That was so amazing seeing that side adit where spoil had been tipped off and down the cliff. Read about it in books, but never seen it before! Still wow!!
It was somewhat freaky but I kept going. Probably safer than the actual tunnel 👍
Great overview and insight as always 👍
From 8:10 the addit relief/debris outscape to cliff area was risky but amazing 👏
Wow what another amazing find in North Yorkshire my auntie lives in North Allerton in North Yorkshire thats for sharing your journey with us 😍🥰
You need to call in Martin Zero he loves disappearing down holes and jumping off cliffs..
you be carefull ant we dont want you getting trapped i a collapse, great video
Thanks Ant. Great video of a place close to my heart. Looking forward to you exploring further south in Sandsend, Whitby and Scarborough. Keep up the good work
Thanks very much. I've done part of the Whitby end I'll be back for the remainder around April
Fantastic thanks Ant. Such stonework thru that tunnel, incredible. Just loved it. Thanks for taking me along. Please take care
Top man yet another quality video you’re just one step above the other explore videos keep them coming 👍
Absolutely brilliant video Ant. I’ve seen videos on the tunnel before but never knew about the adit tunnel. Was so glad when you continued to the end at the expense of your old shoes. Well worth it.
The good news is the footwear survived and live on 😆 Thanks very much indeed
Fantastic video, excellent still images augment the video nicely, great enthusiasm and a good description of where you are and what the tunnel was for.
Fantastic as always. I have often wondered how it would be to convert part of a tunnel to a home.
you have made the best video of kettleness tunnel to date, everyone else did not go into the addit , some never even commented on it, well done!
Thanks very much for your comment. Very kind I'm glad you enjoyed it. Sandsend next week 👍
Great to watch the video after bumping into you on the Cindertrack last week
Brilliant thanks
Its so ridiculous we live right on the edge of all these places in Derbyshire and apart from the plug holes I have no idea how to find any of the other stuff you look at, great to watch tho, thank you
Brilliant video Ant. Stunning work. You're a braver man than I (not to mention slimmer). Thanks.
Yes, carefully tread around the track bed. We don't want you slipping over the edge, mate. Although your companion's tumble was pretty impressive. No injuries I hope.... 🤓
I was expecting an underground dead-end spur!
Evening Ant, haven't had chance to watch it all yet. I save your videos and wobblys until I can watch them properly
The passage was for dumping spoil when they built it. Sandsend has them too , I've not been down the Sandsend ones as even in the 80s they didn't look too good but have been through the kettleness passage
Cheers Russ
Hi Russ thanks for the comment. We followed up with Sandsend Tunnel the same afternoon and shall be on next week 🙂
Excellent video , the tunnels I never knew existed. Stay safe on your next explore
Another lovely tunnel, I did honestly think you'd done that one alone until I saw other people, great you'd got to the end of that addit, love the don't think I'll be able to get much further... I've made it 😁😄
Great video, did kettleness and sandsend tunnels last year, so looking forward to your sandsend video to see if things have changed much , my explore are also uploaded on my channel 👍
This bridges magnificent were pulled down very quick so it could not be reopened.
Brilliant. Just been on hols up there, really fascinating and thank you. Too old to be that daring! So enjoy your videos and pretend I'm with you. Are you going to visit Port Mulgrave anytime soon? I wanted to go down there, but path has apparently disappeared 😮.
Stumbled on this because I've been in kettleness today looking for a disused mine, which I didn't find hence the Google search, pretty impressed
Quite intrigued with you mentioning the disused mine.... I wonder where that is?
Did you see Sandsend Tunnel a few hundred metres further along?
@@TrekkingExploration yeah I just thought it was bridge didn't realise it was a tunnel entrance till I see this video. There's a map just past the stairs at runswick bay heading to kettleness that says disused mine but we couldn't find anything
Sorry just reread my reply we see the kettleness entrance not the Sandsend
This "Journey" must have ended with the washer and dryer topped off with a nice cup of hot tea. "Have a nice trip, see you next fall."
Luckily it was at the end of the day after both tunnels were walked 😂
You should do the whitby to Scarborough disused railway.great video I believe Sandsend tunnel is more dangerous..I think its had a collapse in the portal or the roof
Hi Stephen. I have started that and shall return to complete it around April 🙂
great video great music too who is it ? cheers
Most interesting, Ant. The tunnel was rather short in curvature, and so the speed through it with the check rail must have been at a minimum. The side tunnel/recess, must be a one off where spoil from the construction was tipped over the cliff next to the sea. It was good of you to go through and show us all. The photos of that tunnel and the trains - marvellous! Many thanks for the video.
At 13:30. I think you are looking at where the indigenous rock has been hewn out to accommodate the tunnel bore. Those stones were not brought in, they were already there.
Local to me this one yet I've never went and explored it.
It's nice and dry currently. Walk beyond the southern portal and Sandsend is currently open too
I've explores a number of tunnels myself.
@0:36 I'm seeing evidence of melted construction from a recent cataclysm
it appears as if you were inside a greater structure. Those refuge ports go deep inside the melted structure. The brick lines were evident everywhere you went.
I'm curious about the extreme stone and brick masonry in that early time with a tiny horse and cart population.
Was that Middy taking a dive at the end?
I put that spud there in December 2022. Surprised its still there and in good nick….😂
@@TrekkingExploration
The north portal of the Sandsend Tunnel is pretty dangerous, it’s definitely showing signs of an imminent collapse. Still accessible, from the north portal, but completely blocked at the south portal.

December 10th 2023: Eric the potato is nothing but a shrivelled brown mess with two eyes…. However, the potato near one of the adits must have fallen onto the ground at some point and sprouted. There’s a small cluster of tiny potatoes 😂
Could the tunnel have come across old mine workings from before the Tunnel was constructed !!?
Hi Sam maybe, but this was definitely used for removing spoil and waste
Great video. Were there any signs that bats have colonised the tunnels?
Another cracker video, hey you need a better torch which doesn't give that awful white spot when filming 😉
I was gutted that he was giving up on following that side tunnel all the way to the daylight, but then he came through and made the sacrifice to the mud! Legend! Well worth the view. Thank you!
Thank you very much. I'd have been disappointed with myself if I hadn't at least tried
