    Michelle says she is at her wits’ end with her jobless 22-year-old grandson, Conner, who, according to her, isn’t just lazy but has “failed to launch.” Michelle claims Conner, who has lived with her for the last year, does not regularly shower, brush his teeth, shave, clean his room, or change his clothes. He also has never met his girlfriend of five years in person because, according to Michelle, “that would involve having to leave the house.” Conner says Michelle is overreacting and that at 22, he “shouldn’t have life figured out.” He says he hasn’t yet met his girlfriend in person because of finances. Conner’s mother, Jamie, says she agrees Conner is lazy but believes her mother Michelle is making matters worse by being too strict on him. Dr. Phil arranges for Conner to have a one-on-one session with life development coach Mike Bayer to understand why Conner may be struggling to launch and discusses his new book, One Decision. Will Conner accept the help offered to him? Tune in to find out!

      @airconditioner7178 Před 3 lety +30

      Absolutely, so glad I saw this comment- the rest of them were just making me sad. The stigma is real and sadly, until someone actually goes through a severe debilitating bout of depression, I do not believe that they can ever really truly understand the extent of what happens to someone who is suffering from very real depression. Unfortunately I think the term is also overused, people mistake sadness for depression and that can give you misconceptions about it. I thought I was depressed many years ago, it wasn’t until a few years ago when I went through a serious depression that almost ended my life that I realised what it meant to have severe depression. After experiencing that, I will never judge somebody who is suffering like that. It is horrible when people think you are just not trying. NOBODY would EVER choose to be depressed, it is not something you can’t fix on your own, especially when you are at the point of being unable to leave your house. I wish more people understood it better.

      It's a shame, if he wasn't so defensive or have the chip on his shoulder about his entitlements and his excuses/justifications about his limitations - he'd probably have people around him offering him support. My hunch from so much of how his behaviour is described and how he presents himself, is he appears to fit the criteria as one of the many kids that slip through the cracks of the education system for an undiagnosed inattentive type ADHD with or without a specific learning impairment like dyslexia etc. For young guys in particular it's easier to fit in and call yourself lazy or disinterested when he's actually unable to read or have the working memory it takes to learn the same things as his peers without modifications. Young adults who get to where he is without his GED or drivers licence have very little in life to gain self esteem from, hence the over confidence he seems to have developed as a coping strategy to keep others from becoming aware of his true limitations. It's a bloody shame really, one the education system needs to be accountable for because there doesn't seem to be very much this kid has come out of schooling with apart from a finely tuned defence mechanisms and a sense all he's good for is gaming. It's equally as hard to see how he defends himself completely unaware of how poorly he's coming across as it is seeing him being shamed by those that supposedly love him most as well as the 'experts' whose role is to help him.

It takes motivation to do things. Sometimes, people don't have the motivation to do things because of depression. The definition of lazy is "Unwilling to work or use energy." If you don't have any to begin with because you're depressed, you can't really use energy therefore, you come off as lazy.

      I totally understand what you’re saying. I have dealt and still deal with severe depression and anxiety with panic attacks. That being said I am more happy than I have ever been in my life because I decided to move away from my hometown and pursue the career and lifestyle that I really want. It was a huge change for me and I was very unsure about it but just getting out of that environment has done wonders for me. I can’t even explain how happy I am today compared to the past 15 years of my life. It does piss me off when people say that people with depression are lazy. It’s more so that it just feels impossible to do the little things that people call normal. Depression makes these things damn near impossible but there is a way to deal with it in a healthy way. He needs a good therapist and a structured plan! If not he’s just going to stay in this same process for the rest of his life and that’s all he going to create more Misery. An object at rest stays at rest. I also think that there’s and aspect of enabling from his mother. Environment can cause depression and depression can cause a bad environment but there is a way to break that cycle. People like myself who deal with severe depression are always looking for a way to not be depressed. It’s not some thing that we enjoy. It just doesn’t seem that he even wants to change.

By showing his messy room to the whole world how do you expect him to get any motivation to change his life when the whole world knows how lazy he is. This is the worst she could’ve done to Connor by bringing this to dr.phil which brings me to another sign of her narcissism, Lack of empathy. @@abandonedchanneld8031 Dang man, sorry to hear about that. It was the inverse for me, my parents practically shielded me from the world. I'd say they loved me too much, which was fine (not really) for me emotionally, but when it came to doing stuff on my own I never felt independent. Even going to highschool I was always quiet and shy, avoidant and nervous. I think I missed some odd 60-80 days of high school just staying at home; I was homeschooled throughout my younger grades you see. I excelled in all of my classes say for Math, which both of my parents failed to teach me. So I was in 9th grade pretty much unable to do multiplication or even basic addition. I was depressed and I missed a majority of my days, somehow still managing to stay ahead, or even catch up with all the other students. Eventually my teachers started to notice my decline and put me in school counseling; which helped some but not a lot.
      They (my parents) made the world easy for me, which in turn made me somewhat lazy. *It isn't my responsibility, my mom will take care of it.*
      Was pretty much my mentality at that age. They shielded me and loved me to the point where I had no structure of my own, and I think that's largely because I lost my actual father at a younger age.
      Ironically the thing that saved me was a video game I'd say, if you've ever played Life is Strange. Pretty cool game, and I felt a connection with some of the characters. Gone through similar stuff and it made me realize that my choices had consequences. That eventually I'd have to start living my own life.
      A year and a half ago my mother had a brain aneurysm and it was discovered my step father, practically my father had been cheating. These two things would have destroyed me a year earlier, and it just felt like a wake up call. I forgave my step father and he and my mother repaired their relationship over the next few months, until she had a brain aneurysm. Thankfully he was driving and immediately rushed her to the hospital, they had to lifeflight her to the city and it was a pretty jarring event. Especially on my younger sister, who has just recently been diagnosed with PTSD from it.
      My mother would recover pretty much at a 100% over the next half year. My step father was forced to quit his job and find a new one, working full time as water hauler. My sister needed to attend school, and so that ultimately put my mothers care in my hands. It wasn't anything too difficult, but I had to form a schedule around it and memorize a whole bunch of pills she was taking at the time. Was kind of tough, my mother's condition was so bad at one point she would forget everything every 30 minutes. It took about four months for that to go away and she "woke up" as she said, forgetting that six months of her life had passed entirely. During that time I got into l art, I wanted to do something that I loved to do. A career gamer isn't much of a career if you don't make something of it. I wasn't fancy for computers, and I wasn't good at hardly anything. Suffice to say I bought a beginner sketch pad and loved it. Burning through three 100 page pads in under four months, and decided to transition to digital art not long thereafter. It's been almost eight months since then and I've pregressed far.
      Aside from that, they recently got remarried and we are planning to move to a bigger city for better job opportunities. I'm working on getting my drivers liscence and finding a job. I wouldn't say I'm reformed, but I'm changed.
      Saty the path friend, you'll get there.

    It’s easy for you to say that, as someone who suffers from depression I see the signs already. It’s easy to point fingers and judge. Also the pandemic and finding work isn’t easy for anyone and so many people being laid off because businesses can’t cope with restrictions. You sit there on your little throne and humiliate a young man who’s struggling, making out he does nothing, when in reality, you’re doing nothing to help him. Easy to judge someone when you’ve got everything you want, then having to get someone else and criticize this poor dude, wtf is wrong with you? Your judgement sucks and your show does too, seems as though you’ll do anything for view nowadays. Shame on you
