'Tribal War' was first released on the band's debut 4 track 12" demo disc that included other classics like, Bristol Rock, Move On and The System.
It then appears on the band's debut album simply titled 'Black Roots' released back in 1983. The version shown here was filmed live at The Studio in Bristol in June 1986 and features legendary Jamaican trombone player Vin Gordon. Sound was recorded live and mixed by Mad Professor. This song continues to be a favourite and the band play it as part of their live set today.

    LYRICS
We don’t want no tribal war
    Round here
We, oh no, don’t want no tribal war
    Round here.
    Fighting against your brothers
    Every day now
    Fighting against your sisters
    It’s a disgrace now
Don’t be like the protestant and catholic
Who are killing them, one another
Don’t be like the protestant and catholic
Who are killing them, one another
    Let me tell you now,
We don’t want no tribal war
    Natty dread I said
We, oh no, don’t want no tribal war
    Round here.
    It’s up and down
    On the universe
    Cause the people not attended
    To Jah righteous word
    I don’t know why
    It’s full time now
For them to stop fight against one another
    For people I say, yeah
It’s going to cause a great big disaster
    Let me tell you now,
We don’t want no tribal war
    Natty dread I said
We, oh no, don’t want no tribal war
    Round here.
We no want, we no want
We no want, we no want
    No tribal war
    It’s going to be dread
We no want, we no want
We no want, we no want
    No tribal war
    In dis here land
We no want, we no want
We no want, we no want
    No tribal war
    Destruction I say
We no want, we no want
We no want, we no want
    No tribal war
    Why can’t we live together?

Woi this takes me back to me yout man days, my older brothers went to see Black Roots in coliseum in Cornwall around 83/84 twice I think and were totally blown away by this band called Black Roots and introduced me to them on cassette tapes and was Black Roots Black Roots and in Session. At the time I was listening to Aswad, Steele Pulse, Misty in Roots and Pablo Gad and once my ears heard this group that was it even though I still loved the other 4 top British reggae bands these actually hit different with their heavyweight bass lines and superior vocals and spent many many hours singing along to them after school in my mums house haha some 30 plus years ago now by the way but any chance I get I still play my favourite British reggae band of all time when I’m home alone or with my headphones when on the move. Oh what days

That's so good to hear - we did many gigs and festivals in the West Country back in the 80s and recall many good nights and times. Blessings from the Black Roots family.

Still have my original Black Roots records and great to have them back, touring and new album On The Ground & On The Ground In Dub. We need more conscious bands like Black Roots especially in these times, hopefully the spark that will ignite a resurgence of UK Roots Reggae bands. Respect due!
