Developing Your Weak Hand - Drum Lesson

- The "Teacher/Student" concept is something that I have been teaching for years now and it's a KILLER way to develop your weak hand. In this lesson, I will be using a 3/2 Cascara rhythm to help you feel the difference between your dominant hand and your weak hand. Once you observe the differences, then you can have your weak hand learn from your dominant hand, the TEACHER :)

Came for the drums, stayed for the dog
I don't blame ya lol :)
Came and stayed for the spicy chicken gumbo. 😋
That’s what I thought he meant
I wasn't expecting the dog to bark. He got my dogs acting up. Thanks Mike. 😂😂😂
Hi Mike. Thank you, and I did purchase your course. 68 yo retired. Played until college. Now time to get back into it some 50 years later. Yikes! Did the pro photographer gig for a while and I am truly impressed with your studio setup. First time I’ve seen Canon C class for web and CZcams. Now I understand why your video quality is pretty much spot on.
Dan, thanks for the kind words but more importantly... HELL YES for getting back into drumming. If you own sticks you're family :)
I’ve been training for weeks now on my pad finally after 8 years of thrash metal drumming in a band. Was always too lazy to fix my crappy hand and actually practice anything. Finally got my ass in gear and your videos are the best! Frustrating to watch you and think “yeah I’ve totally got this” only to sit down and half nail it. Haha. Every movement for you is buttery smooth. I am bound and determined to fix my crap hand this year. Thank you for all your help. Oh and I wanna pet your dog.
This lesson really works and is one of the most comprehensive and complete lessons to develop and make your weak hand stronger and more coordinated. The lesson is easy to follow. Exercises breakdown clearly explained. I used this lesson to work on my wrak left hand and its worked. I can now utilize hand finger technique without a lot of effort. It just keeps getting better and easier with practice.
Thanks Mike!!!🎵🥁🎶
Hey Mike. I'm new to your channel. I'm 55. I've been playing drums since I was 10. Just want to say, you're a great great teacher! Your enthusiam, explanation, playing, sound and production value are incredible, man.
Awesome drum room dude! I can’t wait till I can renovate my basement. The ship lap centre back wall would be awesome with some soft close hidden drawers in the bottom 4-5 panels for drum keys, sound off pads or any other coveted trinkets. Keep up the great work bro. God bless.
Love the scar solo 5:11
Mike, as a school teacher, love the behind the scenes of the production! Really teaches me a lot about what I can do for my own online lessons during Covid-19 and with my current gear. This is great stuff to share to students, practice for ourselves, and see how it is done. Fantastic!
5:19 I always like to believe that you are going on with this for several minutes and then during editing, you are like "oh man, did I get sidetracked here...." :D
Bro, it's happening in my head 24/7! "Life" is what sidetracks my air drumming, LOL
That bike is beautiful. Love the black matte. I ride a Blue Triad when not drumming.
A good approach to use Afro-Cuban patterns and rhythms. It's quite musical. Thanks, Mike. God bless you, for good ideas.
Wow I used to watch Mike back in the day when he was in his home before moving to the studio. So good to see him reaching the heights in 2020
Andrew T Much appreciated Andrew! What can I say, I love to teach!!!
Mike Johnston Thanks for the reply, you made my day! Not only do you love it but you’re amazing at it, keep up the great work. Now i’m in the mood to put down the guitar and bust out a few spicy paradiddles 😁👍
@@andrewt836 HELL YA!!! Get after it my friend :)
This is awesome, thanks Mike and happy 2022!!!!
Your room greatly satisfies my inner OCD!
Looking at your videos I got me that very same practise pad. I must say it’s the best by far!
Yes, please.
Thanks.
Mighty Mike great lesson thanks for sharing your knowledge dude
This is so awesome man, you exemplify greatness.
Well done
Thanks for the lesson Mike! Your studio looks awesome! Very cool gear! Those cameras are sick!!
Always pleased to have another amazing lesson :D
Again a brilliant lesson! Thanks Mike! 🤘🏻
Hi Mike, thank you for everything. You have been inspiration for drums. I enjoyed your lessons very much since 2010 I have been following your videos on youtube. You are the best drum teacher ever on youtube. I'm blessed by your lessons. I'm a drum teacher too haha, for about 10 years teaching experience. Thanks and take care!
I had learnt drums when i was a kid ...like 3 yrs old till 15...then i lost track of my master as i was too busy with my studies...this man made me resume my drums and converted it to my passion....hats off,🥺🥺💯
Educational and wholesome content! Greetings from Ireland!
Came for the drums, stayed for the TEA! Dude I so appreciate the tea room. 🤙
Thank you Mike! For the excersize and the motivation!! Thank you
That room is beautiful man
Wonderful exercise and great lighting setup
really like the clean and organized work/practice space very nice
Thanks for including info on bpm. Always helpful to understand a good starting place and then where I want to head towards. I am 57 and started learning abt 4 months ago and I love drills like this.
Incredible Mike! Great lesson and Love the setup thanks for sharing :) So pro! 🔥😎🙏
Great lesson, exactly what I'm trying to work on at the moment, sound Mike! ✌️ Awesome set up as well!
@mike Johnston not sure if you remember me but we met when you came to Southampton in England and you called me twelve. I was sat in the front row and I got to play on your kit because I asked about your custom cowbell. I then went and brought one!
1/ LOVE the color of your kit. 2/ greatly appreciate the lighting rig rundown
It's interesting, Shawn Crowder just had a left hand video too. Must be something in the air that's got people focusing on non-dominant hands.
Great lesson. 🙏🏻
Always a pleasure Mike, never left a comment before. Love your approach. I really struggle with motivation to learn, I guess you can’t teach that can you! Will try this one as I always do, but don’t get enough time on my kit due to noise levels, £ and space.
Thanks
Keith
Extremely brilliant 💁🏻♀️
Wow I was gonna say next time ya give a tour maybe only eat half the brownie first. BUT I figured out I had it on .75 pbs (and I don't eat brownies)
I found the walk thru interesting. Thanx
P.S. Clicked fer the dog stayed for the drums.
Wow thanks Mike! Oh also I have just bought your cymbal set from meinl and they sound amazing!!
My instructor is working on my student hand. Great lesson.
Great job Mike!
I also find just doing the stuff you normally do with your dominant hand, using your weak hand instead helps a lot. Also doing guitar scales up and down oddly enough. You just gotta make it feel normal to use Your other hand
Gorgeous setup bro✌🏻❤️
Thank you, great exercise!
Thanks for the lesson and the tour Mike. GREAT setup, and it certainly shows in the quality of your videos. You could shoot movies with all that gear 🤣
Much Appreciated! I would be more than happy to shoot a movie about tea :) lol
more like "came for the drums stayed for the dog" 😁😘
Nice setup. I’d love to know the story behind the cymbal art?
You are sooooo cool to share with us your gear thank you Mike. I am also a dog lover!
I am left handed, play a right handed setup. Also play closed face. I’m extremely weird, and this has helped my ghost note placement, tremendously.
Great lesson Mike! Glad I found your channel , I saw you play with Simon Says at Rocklin HS in 99 or so. I remember watching the drum break on Trip Wire....mind blown! I had to get a better look at what your were doing on that one, took me years to get my right foot to do that. Great inspiration though.
Your studio is amazing. I know I need to play well before investing for gears. But still educational to know lightings etc.
Well...this has now just become a part of my normal warmup. Finally comfortable at 120 bpms....took fo eva to get there but I did. Thanks Mike, this is really helpful!
I mostly liked the Orbea bike on the wall haha! Awesome set up, I used to shoot some wedding videos and you've got some lovely stuff (I'm a drummer/teacher mainly). Like the mini e-kit practise stations for lessons.
Really nice exercise and fun to play it 😎
I'm just proud that I was able to figure out the exercise before you put the notes on the screen.
Came for the groove. Stayed for the groove. But I love the dog.
Thank you, Mike, another great lesson! I love your pad exercises, always sweet and to the point.
I've been wondering what happened to one your other pad exercise videos? I think you used the Reflexx pad in it as well and the pattern was something like RrlLrr LlrRll Rlrr Lrll Rlrr felt as triplets. I liked playing along to it but can't find it anymore. I checked on your website too but couldn't find it either.
Impresionante 💪
Could you make a matcha tea video, looking to get into matcha and want to know what are your favourite kinds and recipes. Also, love your videos.
Matthew Watterson Hey Matthew, I make them all the time on my Instagram page. Shoot me an email and I’ll help get you started with some Matcha suggestions. mike@mikeslessons.com
Another great analogy ...
Man we love you
and I love y'all right back!!!
You the best drum nerd
That's a great looking setup. The time you took to learn all the lighting and camera work definitely paid off. Your intro is also really impressive. Did you create that yourself and if so what software did you use? And obviously, more Juneau please.
I need that pad in my life!
mike i love you, your such a pro. i was wondering if on one of these lessons if you could do a quick few minutes about throne height? i feel like this is something ive never really thought about and i sit quite low. i also have a bad back. but love it man!
Then lift it dawg
Alonzo Mercado yes I’m just not sure about the benefits of lifting it.. and if this is an issue I need to worry about for the future. My bad back is actually caused by a car crash so I’m not saying throne heigh is connected to it, but I’d love more info on it!
sedatedthirst I mean just do whatever causes the least amount of stress, and invest in a good throne like a rocnsoc. This should at least help a little
YESSS THIS IS WHAT I CAME HERE TO SEE! JUNEAU!!!
You and everyone else, LOL :)
Great set up! Thanks for the studio tour! Do you record audio direct to cameras or do you mix it in post? 🥁👍🏻
Hi Mike, thanks for another great video and the tour of the studio. Great and inspiring place indeed :) I have noticed 2 or 3 small - bass drum, hi hat, snare drum setups (maybe student setups) in the video. I am looking for a similar compact setup for my 6yo to practice in apartment (well and me too, of course :)). May I ask what pads and module are you using with that setup? Thanks again :)
You ride bikes?! Awesome man! You just got 3 more points from me! ;)
This a good exercise. Everytime I think I've thought something up, no Mike's got a vid of it already. Stand on my head and set fire to myself whilst playing 11/ 8 Baiao. No, Mikes already got a vid of that. It's maddening. But check this out; we play 4 groups of 8th note trips moving the accent to each partial. Or we play 4 groups of 16th notes, moving the accent to each partial. Old hat right? But what if we do that same thing with groups of quints? You could even count it, tak e din ah gah, if you wanted. Or groups of 7, whatever that tabla count is. It probably on vid or in book already. Also how about future camp book having a Marvel theme? ooooh aaaahhh. Dynamics wise, you could go from Ant Man to Giant Man. Speed wise, one could reference Pietro (Quicksilver). Metric modulation would probably be Dr Strange. lol What say you?
Noticed your right and left index fingers hold the stick differently in the beginning. How important to have a perfect matched grip? YOur right wraps around the stick more. Thanks for the great lessons!
came for the drums, stayed for the G O O D B O Y E
LOL!!! Well done :)
Muy bueno
Love seeing people type out a comment starting with, I know you won't have time to answer, or I'm sure you won't see this... Then right below it says reply from Mike Johnston! I remember just about passing out the first time he replied XD..... By the way Mike, you were right. I LOVE these 14in Byzance Vintage Pure hats!!!
LOL! Why even leave the comments enabled if you’re not going to read and respond right? So glad that you’re digging those Vintage Pure hats!!!
I just ... can't...even...wait....yesss, I can!
1:28 that was slick
Here’s a video I’m interested in. Show us how those cool frames and wall mounts for the cymbals got made.
This is a method I use a lot but I'm saving this anyway just in case I forget.
Hey mike this is one of my biggest struggles actually is my left hand so I appreciate this video a lot. I don’t know if you have but can you do a video on making your left or non dominant foot be able to be independent when keeping a pulse on the hi hat. I tend to always go into like a double bass thing with the hi hat and I look stupid lol thanks love you for all you do for all of us. 🤘 🥁
That's wonderful to hear Brandon! And heck ya I can help with that. I have a bunch of courses dedicated to that exact issue: www.mikeslessons.com/courses/independence
Thank you so much i will head over there. Videos are a pleasure as always.
AWESOME concept. Doggo knows whats up.
Much appreciated Blake! We need to catch up man!!!
@@mikeslessons would love to man! hope you are doing well.
Unexpectedly, my left hand became the teacher of my right for playing ghost notes.
Came for the drums stayed for the dog!
Amazing Hot Sauce Mike. I've also switched too Vic's 5AN
Ironically I just moved away from Vic 5AN's. They just seemed to break too often. Been trying out Vater's version and so far they seem more durable
How do you tune your practice pad? Only drummer who makes it sound like he’s playing a Tom on the practice pad. Love this guy. Thanks for all your awesome videos
lol, I appreciate that man. If you care about the pad as much as you care about the kit you can make it SING! :)
Are you married to your kit? 😂
@@creepymcnastyone My love for that kit is definitely marriage level stuff! LOL
Hey Mike How's it Going? I'm Struggling with My Left Hand, it Feels as Though it Tenses Up, Can't Make it Relax and Feel Comfortable, Also My Pinky and Ring Finger Don't Seem to Want to Stay on the Stick! Any Advice on What I Could Do To Relearn or Reteach the Left Hand to Be Like My Right hand! I Will Try this Exercise for Sure But Anything Else I Can Do to Help my Left Hand Would Be Great! Thanks So Much and Wishing You All the Best Always!!!!
Mike, what app is that on your iPad?
BEAUT BEAUT SET UP
@Mike Jonhston, What is high level of playing? 160 BPM?
Cascara!
Search "Cavaliers - Latin Lover" and find aaaaalmost this exact exercise, (2 notes off) alternating hands and everything, used in a warmup by the Cavaliers drumline. It's what got me into drumming.
Came for the dog, stayed for the drums
Came for the drums, stayed for the dog!
noice! Did tapping on my lap)
Came for the dog and the drums, Mick
Awesome sauce! May I please ask what that pad is, looks and sounds grand. Be safe.
Thanks brother! It really is quite nice, it's the Reflexx resistance pad.
@@mikeslessons Thanks kindly for the low down on the pad, will grab myself one! Stay safe eh.
What was the name of that song at the end? Had some funk on it
Great exercise! And great looking studio! But most importantly, beautiful dog :)
Odd Drummer Gaming I completely agree with the dog comment, lol 🙏🍵🙏🍵
What size are the cymbals on the wall? They look massive but it could be the frame
Do you do these set ups and videos inside the studio all by your self or do you have people helping you? Great video!
The only one helping me is my dog Juneau, lol. I literally stopped drumming for almost 2 years (besides teaching) to learn everything I could about making better videos. I hope it paid off, lol :)
Wow, it goes without saying that the effort you put into your work is clearly noticeable! Looks and sounds amazing, always. And of course, very helpful!
