    Hi. I am learning how to play the oud, and this was extremely useful to learn more about all these different techniques. Thank you for taking the time to put this together.

      honestly i don't exactly remember, i can see a simple piezo that someone made me, i have a few and i always blend that with a DPA 4099 (not here though) and/or the sound from the "camera" (my phone)

    Nice Playing! May I ask what kind of Our you have and where did you get it? looks either Iraqi or Turkish. I like the pure, clean sound!

      this is a morroccan oud built by Samir Abbassi, I believe he lives in Belgium or the Netherlands. Morroccan ouds kind of have their own sound, they are often more resonant the eyptian style ouds which aim for a drier more traditional sound

    Thank you for this amazing demonstration Yaniv! I've been revisiting this video since 2 weeks now after I got my first ever Oud. I wanted to ask, which pickup would suggest in order to play it through an amp or a loudspeaker system?

    • @YanivMasel
      @YanivMasel  Před rokem

      Thank you friend! In order to amplify an Oud you need a piezo pickup. There are many brands and price ranges, I use K&K twin spot. however take note that the ideal placement for the pickup can be hard to find, every small movement creates a drastic change in sound, so either experiment or get some help from an experienced luthier/musician

    great video man! What's the name of the technique in 4:03 to 4:05? in seems to involve pull-offs and synchronization of the right and left hand. I am looking for it for oud or guitar, when I slow it down I don't understand what's going on. If it has a name please let me know. thanks.

      هلا أحمد تسلم
      In Turkish music the technique is called Çarpma but that might be a general name for a number of onrnaments. On this video you commented on it is exercise number 4 I called it syncopated legato (no upstroke). A rose is a rose... What you are asking about from 4:03 is the same only played faster and on one string horizontally instead of two strings vertically.
      I have a small series dedicated to exercises for climbing up the neck called "Hand Positions for Oud", start at #01 but check out #03 for an advanced drill combining Çarpmas with more trills in an expanding/shrinking sequence.
