Maqam Phrasing #01
zhlédnutí 2,3KPřed 3 lety
Today we're talking about phrasing in Maqam, starting from the basics. Being more melodic-based than harmonic, Maqam music employs many unwritten rules and "limitations" the musician must take on himself in order to present the Seyir properly, or in other words stick to the melodic progression. If we understand these rules and use them correctly it can give a lot of direction to our Taqsim/comp...

    Great video! Can you please tell me what metronome you're using? Thanks. - Tony

    • @YanivMasel
      @YanivMasel Před 7 měsíci

      I programmed the metronome to a bar of 8 at 250bpm. Think of it as a bar of 8/8 and the metronome is counting each beat grouping them 123 123 12, with the 1s getting the dum/kick (most metronomes have at least two sounds) so DTT DTT DT, and with the oud you are playing on 1/16th note "resolution". I hope that's clear, happy digging

    • @TonyDArco
      @TonyDArco Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks for explanation, but I don't have a programable metronome. I just do what I can with constant beats at about 104 bpm. I prefer your system so I'll have to investigate another alternative. Thanks again. Tony

      wow big words i hope to be worthy of 🙏 the channel has always been on low flame becuase i produce these videos in my free time and each one takes many hours of planning, filming, editing etc. normally i am just too busy. recently i have made a series of 5-7 videos each for a specific ornament most of them are in final stages. i intend to upload them but i need some time to make translations, this is a challenge i always have with the channel as i would like every video to be available in three languages english hebrew and arabic, which is also a very time consuming process but comments like yours definitely give me alot of encouragemnet thank you

    @nicogetz Před 10 měsíci

    Yaniv, this is amazing. You really show a very advanced understanding of the maqams, and this content is incredibly helpful. The segah family of maqam is one of the most challenging for me as a westerner used to a lifetime of equal temperament, both to listen to and feel as well as understand, and this is incredibly helpful. Particularly helpful was the note on how jins hijaz is altered in this context with the second degree raised and the third degree flattened, very similar to what I've sometimes heard called "garip hicaz" in Turkish makam theory. (Your use of Segah instead of Sikah, and other names like Buselik, Dugah, etc suggests you are familiar with Turkish makam as well as the Arabic theory-- is this true??) Being able to follow along and understand what is happening in a taqsim like this makes it much more enjoyable and musical, and solidifies the understanding of the musical landscape. Really appreciate your hard work and high quality content. It's invaluable! ❤

    • @YanivMasel
      @YanivMasel Před 9 měsíci

      You are very welcome and I am glad you find it helpful, thank you for your kind words. In Arabic music the names of the notes are basically identical to the Turkish names (Dugah, Buselik etc.) but the ancient origin of both is Persian. I am very familiar with Turkish Makam (and really love folk Türkü), as well as Persian Dastgah and I spent a good few years studying Azerbaijani Mugham, I still enjoy all of them as well as many other styles of music but for the past years my primary focus has returned to Arabic music as it closest to me and the people around me therefore I get to play it most. I also speak and sing in Arabic but not Turkish or Farsi etc. Having said all that, I recommend studying one system at a time so as not get lost, it is easy to spread out horizontally only once you reach deep enough in one place

  • @nicogetz
    @nicogetz Před 10 měsíci

    This is excellent, thank you for this content. As a westerner learning oud, there is not a lot of high quality, English language content explaining theory of the maqamat, and even less applying directly to the oud. Very glad to have found your channel!

      this is a morroccan oud built by Samir Abbassi, I believe he lives in Belgium or the Netherlands. Morroccan ouds kind of have their own sound, they are often more resonant the eyptian style ouds which aim for a drier more traditional sound

  • @mittridgebibimix7809

    Thanks for this and many other videos, Yaniv! Your profound approach to playing oud is ivery impressive! I'm only starting this way Could I ask you about your right arm- elbow and upper part of arm. Is it floating constantly in the air? Or it stays in contact with oud for support in some points? Once again thank you for your art!

    • @YanivMasel
      @YanivMasel Před 9 měsíci

      hi i missed your question sorry... always feel free to contact me by mail or instagram/facebook etc.. as to your question: the right must be in contact with the oud otherwise it will fall. you must be able to comfortably hold the oud and use the risha with no support from the left hand. the oud is held and supported by three points for stability: 1. the thigh of the right leg 2. the right side of your stomach up to your chest near the armpit 3. the right arm. the point of contact is the forearm (the middle part of the arm), it rests on the frame of the oud, more or less on the imaginary continuation of where the bass C string would meet the frame (and not from higher above as in guitar) make sure you slightly bend your right wrist so the risha has enough room to move. it shold touch the strings in the area between the two small soundholes let me know if that helped, good luck!

    • @YanivMasel
      @YanivMasel Před rokem

      As the name of the series suggests, these are exercises for playing on one string horizontally instead of changing strings vertically. It practices using correct hand positions (of the thumb and palm) and fingerings. These are critical especially on a fretless instrument. Turkish Ud players use this style of playing extensively, in Arabic music somewhat less but still in my opinion useful to know and fun to practice.

    • @YanivMasel
      @YanivMasel Před rokem

      Thank you friend! In order to amplify an Oud you need a piezo pickup. There are many brands and price ranges, I use K&K twin spot. however take note that the ideal placement for the pickup can be hard to find, every small movement creates a drastic change in sound, so either experiment or get some help from an experienced luthier/musician
