In this episode, we begin plumbing the bathrooms in our shipping container home and test fit our bathtub and toilet. We ran into a couple of obstacles this week, but that's just how it goes when you're building your own home. All of these struggles will just make the end result that much sweeter.

You actually believe they have 'no experience' ! This a Made for CZcams, operation, I guarantee there was a crew who did this. Look at the likes, they are making lots of money off that! And, there is one where the put a Green/ earth roof! Remember that old saying, IF ITS TOO GOOD TOO BE TRUE....

Little tip to prevent drill bit slipping on metal, use a nail or hole punch to create a dip or divot in the area or stick a piece of masking tape down and that should create enough grip for the bit to drill the hole.

If you haven't already move the rafter so you can get the vent pipe in. I don't know what your tub instructions say with regard to putting concrete under it but if the inner tub doesn't sit flat on the floor you are supposed to put concrete under it so the inner tub doesn't crack one day. When my fiberglass tub was installed in 12/1993 the installer put concrete under it. That has always been the practice. You guys are doing great. Makes me wish I had one of those house's too.

  • @allenj5865

I built a container home in 2013, using 3 - 40' high cubes. Having a portable welder/generator on a small trailer allowed me to save a ton of time during construction. I ran lights, a fan, a compressor, a chop saw, and the most valuable tool...a plasma cutter. Cutting through corrugated steel, c-channels, and other structural elements was easy. Using hole saws and other bits is very expensive and sometimes dangerous. I used the grinder only for occasional cleaning and related tasks. I did all interior framing using steel studs, then spray foam insulated. When my project was completed, I sold all of those expensive tools.
The challenges that you have yet to face is covering the container floors with finished flooring, especially over the areas which are steel plates. I have already been through all those learning curves, and could offer some guidance if you'd like.
The lady bugs here are crazy, especially when there are warm days following cold ones. Not just once a year, but several times a year.

I think you two tackled a tough job. Well done. I don't imagine most people realize that using the shipping containers saved you time and money in pouring a foundation, slab-on-grade, all the preparatory in-slab utilities, extra framing, etc. It removed a lot of the other complexities associated with a conventional build. Not to mention, if a person is inexperienced (say with plumbing) and one of the connections/joints leaked, it is a pain to break open the concrete slab-on-grade to track down the problem. If one occurs now, he can just crawl under his home and fix the issue. This works.

You can keep the water tight roof and just use a Studor vent. Don’t cut the rafters or punch a hole in the roof you two worked so hard on. You already have an air gap between the container and the roof. That’s all you need.

I installed two of those Niagara Stealth toilets in my remodel and I love them! I went with the one piece model, but I'm sure the two piece will be just as good. Great choice!

Worried about water ? Build a outhouse , and seeing you two together , build a two seater ! Ahhh , TOGETHERNESS ! When I drilled my hole for the bathtub, yup, right on top of the floor joist ! Moved it over six inches , it was a one piece shower and tub so it didn’t show . Keep swinging you’ll get there !
