My 1402 VLZ sent to Mackie in Washington State for warranty sometime in 2008. Mackie replaced transformer, and entire circuits boards with 1402 VLZ Pro. But the steal housing- case stayed the same since serial affixed on the back. However, the original mixer circuits boards made in the USA, but the all the circuits board made in China during the warranty period. In 2017, I started experience intermittent left audio main out weak, I had ran series of tested by different setup configurations. Yes, this 1402 VLZ Pro does have several series of problems with XLR inputs and inserts that I used with dbx 1066 compression/limiter/gate. I am about to purchased new one, but still not sure which one, yet? I am very busy to do any DIY. I have electronics and electrical engineering background. I love this compact mixer with simple operation. I needed 4 XLR mics, 4 Stereo inputs, inserts, 48V individuals phantom powers, monitors, etc. This tiny Mackie mixer does very good job over the years. Mackie no longer accepting any repairs at theirs manufacturing in Washington State. They have sub-contractors in each states, those sub-contractors did not repaired well for Mackie products or QSC products, in my experienced.
Wow, great video - I just got the same mixer up and running. I got it for £10 at an electronics fayre and its 110v, so someone had disconnected the mains transformer - being in England (240v) they obviously couldn't find a replacement either. What made me laugh is i have the same Gorilla amp in my garage I use for testing stuff and I got that for free too!
Actually, there is a thermal fuse wrapped under tape on the primary for the transformer, It is a 130 degree Centigrade 1 amp fuse. You can repair the transformer by replacing the thermal fuse assuming that the rest of the mixer is ok. Its available on EBAY.
The person who owned it passed away, but before that decided not to invest into finalizing the repair. And I don't work there anymore. If someone wants to send me another one for repair I'd be glad to do an updated video on it
Transformer failure is easy to repair, there is hidden thermal fuse (135*), just change it for new. Bypass capacitors failure is very popular in this mixers...
Many Thanks for the video. Mackie mixer repair videos are rare on CZcams. I would find it useful if you explained and showed in a little more detail the physical connections you are making with your equipment. In particular with respect to the earth which can sometimes be problematical. I look forward to future videos.
Thanks for posting, sorry about the parts scarcity. I think I would just put the generic transformer in, and forget phantom power. Live bands would typically use condenser mics on the road anyway and seldom/never have need for phantom power. In a studio (I don't think any studio would use this small of a board anyway), any mics requiring phantom power could be fed with an add-on box.
You are great!! and very entertaining !!! Love how well you know what you are doing, i would bring all my gear to you for repair. are you in New Jersey?
I recently found out that most phantom powered mics work in a range from 12 to 48 volts. For instance, my presonus 8 channel interface actually outputs 13 volts phantom. So i think your main 18 volt supply would suffice for phantom power as well.. or am i missing something here?
Most boards use the same voltages in general. A transformer from a similar board may have a different connector, but with heat shrink and soldering skill you can substitute a transformer. For example, try this one from Compass OUR PART #: 0019987. An alternative is to write Compass or Mackie and ask.
Hey thanks for your videos, was hoping you might be able to tell me what part(s) I need to replace on my 1642VLZ that has a dead Left Main Output. I have nothing coming out of the Left Main XLR or the 1/4" out. Doesn't appear to have anything to do with the insert jack which some have noted. Thanks again and hope you're still out there
Hi, thanks for the video, Im not very techie but was the problem with the power supply because it failed from age or was it designed wrong? Or was the reading from the powersupply because of the blown element that you showed?
Man, I'd like to ask a question about a Peavy USB series board. Sometimes, any mic that I use in the XLR channels, sounds like the gain is just maxed out and I'm talking through a bull horn. At the same time, the 1/4 inch portions work fine and the stereo channels work fine, it's just all of the XLR channels will sound maxed one day and be fine the next. All gains are reasonably set, nothing is dimed in the power amp section. Doesn't matter if it's a dynamic or a condenser. Any thoughts? If I might pick your brain? The board is very dirty and I haven't been inside of it yet.
Thank you THEtechnight very much for sharing your expertise. 1604 Pro Vlz, When turned on, the green led's light up across all channels. even with nothing pluged -in. A loud humm in the headphones. Any advise
i found some electronics that i couldn't find in my country or e-bay, on aliexpress.com, you can try there to find anything you want , as we all know many electronic parts are from china... so this site propably have what you want ! i hope that this tip will help you!
I need volume sliders pots to a Korg Soundlink 168rc, can not find any spareparts what could be used? One slider is partially working but sending out weird vol strength all over the place "over midi" until you push it to one side then it locks, so it seem like a lose connection. How hard is it for a layman doing a first time slider pot exchange?
Now, there are 2 things you can do. Either A, check the solder joints to the potentiometer itself, and reflow as necessary. 2, use a can of DeOxit and clean the pot's carbon track and work it back and forth.
Sir, I am the proud owner of the same mixer. Well, what I want to know is, do you still have the Mackie 1402 VLZ Pro laying around maybe concidering selling parts off it.......Thank You for the video
Hey, thanks for the vid. I have a 1202 VLZ-PRO that desperately needs a cleaning/lube on the trim pots. I took off the back panel, but there's a second PCB board blocking me from getting at the pots. The way that the screws are setup, it's not very obvious how to remove this second board. I didn't notice you performing this task in the vid. Are you familiar with how to remove this board? Thanks.
I hv a tapco mix 60 mixer and I hv noticed a strange issue with this,.. When I see the peak meter to check the levels it remains as it is,.It doesnt go up.. I have to really crank up the gain to record,..Earlier the meters used to work and the recording quality was very punchy,.Now it sounds hollow,.Can u tell me whee the problem lies? There is no service centre in my city,.So I will have to go to any technician and tell him where to check,.,..
Please help me. I can maybe get audio mixer for low price but it is broken. Guy says it makes buzzing noise and he doesn't work with electric so he can't fix it and he is selling it. My question is what could be wrong and is it worth trying to fix it. I like working with electronics so it is not a problem for me but i am scared that i will not fix it.
Got 2 mixer exactr like that, EU version, both with exact the same issue as yours included the damn trasformer that is impossible to find. So after a big research I've changed it with a toroid one, 17+17 (enough, trust me) and used a tiny small one 48V found in germany for phantom, after diodes I got 52 v that's enough. My conclusion? Mackie fail selecting components tollerance for this mixer and they NOT provide spare parts, too bad for such a great company and good tech design, so I've decided to change a bit the power supply (bigger condensers, Skottky diodes, more 100nf for bypass, enlarged heatsync), not a big change but I have got other 2 ceramic bypass capacitor issue that evaporated instead go in short circuit as before (and RIP my old transformer).
Where are you located? I have the same mixer but it's starting to die. When they work, channels 1-4 pop and/or sound very hollow . Only 5 and 6 work ok. It's been fine since I only do pod-casting and right now we can get away with 2 mics, but soon I'll need those other channels fixed. What do you charge for that?
+Daniel Larios You probably need to spray out all the potentiometers with DeOxit or some other form of contact cleaner. Once you do that, it will likely be ok.
I have a 1402 VLZ- in the middle of taking it apart and I have taken out two allen head screws (the only two allens on the inside) on a small satellite board up by the power supply. Once these two screws are out there are 2 brass standoff posts...should I be able to just take some pliers and take them out counter clockwise or am I missing something?
If this were my mixer, I'd be perfectly happy with losing phantom power in exchange for an otherwise working mixer! If my choices are "no mixer" and "mixer without phantom power," the answer is clear!
"Try" (yes I know about the outdate) that one: 50VA Dual Primary (2 x 0-115V) Toroad (2x18V 50VA Toroidal Transformer) or some variant of TS 40/043 40W 2x18V 2x1,1A for ex.
I have exactly the same mixer. TRACK 2 can't pan to LEFT (the pot can turn, but the signal doesn't go to the left) with as a result the Main Mix only has R from track 2, not L + R.. Any ideas? Thanks
these things cant be shotgunned. you will have to generate a test tone either with an app or function generator, and go signal tracing with a scope to figure out which stage is bad. sometimes the xlr or phono plug jack solder joints can crack but its rare.
I’ve got a Mackie 32.4 VLZ Pro and it is not getting any power. The manual reads that I can replace the fuse by sliding a compartment by the A/C receptacle. I’m a novice so can someone give tips on how to replace fuse?
I was just given a 1402 LVZ3 it work but mic 1 and mic 3 inputs don't work. am I looking at an expensive repair lol or should I just get a new one. I mean its a simple fix I'm all good with that. Any insight would be greatly appreciated
+Richard Zom (ZomOfTheDead) Things like these cant be shotgun repaired, they have to have some level of troubleshooting. It could be something as simple is broken solder joints on the XLR jacks themselves, it could be simply dirty input select switches, and then it could be something as serious as a bad component in the op-amp circuit. I dont have a schematic for the VLZ3 model, only the base VLZ so I am unsure of the differences.
it put out AC, and the PCB rectified and regulated it down with a 7815 7915 linear regulator setup. Anyways, when I still worked for this company, I ended up using a couple switchers (SMPS) to retrofit into this thing and make it work.
THEtechknight thank you. I have one with a bad transformer so I'm trying to locate something to replace it. I thought it was going to be AC out but hard to tell from the video. Thanks for the help. this is the first reference to actual voltage out of the transformer I have found. we're you ever able to confirm that it is the 18/50 volts?
What you can do, if you don't need phantom power, is grab a 36V center-tapped transformer which gets you +/-18V, and from there you can get the rails back. But here's the problem. Transformers don't go bad for no reason, as in my case, the transformer failed because of an overload condition on one of the rails. So you need to check this 1st.
I do plan to check that. I pulled the transformer apart and found the 120 positive lead disconnected from the coil but no luck. Transformer is still not putting any power out. I did not find a heat resistor or anything like that either.
have you come across any 1604-VLZ Pro mixers with the issue of the main outs cutting out? sometimes louder on the right side and the left side would suddenly drop out or just be lower in volume by about 3 to 9 dB? I have my mixer apart. I replaced the main fader, but the issue is still there. Someone suggest replacing the Op Amp for the main fader, another person suggest replacing the tiny 120 ohm resistor near the 1/4" output jack (R79, R80, R83, R84 on the PCB - page 6 on service manual) . I am leaning toward the resistor, but not 100% sure.
Well, the only real way to figure that one out is using a signal generator, and watch it with an oscilloscope, trace it back stage by stage until you figure out which stage is causing the issue. Right off the bat the only thing I can think of is bad solder joints on the jacks themselves. Resistors dont do that. Capacitors, ICs, and Bad Solder joints can do this.
I don't have either tools unfortunately. I re-soldered the output jacks (since I had to remove them to get to the SMT resistors to check impedance) and checked continuity from the connection pin to the main out jack...all good. Now I get nothing except for some crosstalk. Everyone swears ribbon cables are the issue, but I am not convinced. I did a continuity check on the main out ribbon cable and they're good. I have some Op-Amp ICs coming in and I'll replace that one at the main fader. Another thing I noticed is a slightly bulging cap 2200uf 25v in the power supply section, but the schematic says its for the BNC lamp circuit. So if that one pops I won't be too worried since it appears to be independent circuit.
I need your help, i got a power speaker the speakers tweeter and woofer work i tested and also the wite leads all good but there is no (mid-bass sound send to the speaker)? The tweeter is sounding i tried various speakers but no bass . Its an ELectro voice model ZLX-12powered and yes this board seems to have pure new mini capacitors ect and it looks like nothing is burn . Help please
Hi I know this is an old video, But some years ago I replaced the faders of all the channels of the mackie but it didnt work fine, so I left for some years apart, Know Id like to get the faders volumes at aliexpress But I dont have the data to ask for the faders, for example from the channel 1 to 6 maybe all them are Mono channels and the channels 7 to 10 maybe are stereo, and the master volume and the one before ? please help me to get all the volume control faders. give 'please the data of all them to ask for them.
+Djdannys Mexicano you have to go off the ones you have, you should have part numbers on the potentiometers themselves, and from there you can cross-reference. YOU have to do a little homework.
Rosendo Ortega This board is something I would have to personally see. This is a microcontroller-based board, and god only knows where that issue resides. It could be something as easy as a missing voltage from a shorted op-amp, or MLCC capacitor, spill damage, or something as worse and terminal as the microcontroller itself.
Rosendo Ortega North Carolina. Used to be ohio. Anyways, I am going to see if I can get some service information, it would aid me to figure out whats going on.
Depends on whats going on with it and how obvious the fault is. I dont have a test setup for bare boards so without the other parts it'll be hard to troubleshoot, unless the fault is obvious. I know a 32 channel mixer is almost impossible to ship because of size and weight, so having a general idea of the fault would help alot.
Custom transformers are pain in the ass. I wouldn't wind one myself because a lot of effort and buying that from Mackie could cost an arm and a leg... argh :(

+John R Jones Power supply issue there. One of your dual-rails is missing, OR a bad filter capacitor. need to inspect things with a multimeter.
I am trying to replace the bottom Rt main mixing fader. Sure wish I could see you take this apart from the beginning. It would be much easier for me.
i didnt think of doing the video until after i discovered the problem. i cant refer back as i am no longer an employee there.

I would use 2 small 24 volt transformers for that voltage. The current is low in that rail and in most cases doesn't even need to be A full 48 volts
I got this exact unit and channel 1 and 2 don't work. I might be willing to sell for parts.

Would love to know how to add a 4 pin dc power supply to this board.
Have you tried sourcing the transformer through Mackie?
May be been changed different part no.
How do you take the board apart
I'm needing to replace one of the faders. What tool did you use to take the main board off of the grey metal frame. It's not a standard screw.
yes it is. it is a very small allen key. you also have to remove allbof the knobs to get at the potentiometer mounting nuts.
Hey, thanks for the vid. I have a 1202 VLZ-PRO that desperately needs a cleaning/lube on the trim pots. I took off the back panel, but there's a second PCB board blocking me from getting at the pots. Depends on when it was manufactured. the old mixers are probably suffering from capacitor failure.
Please help me.

yep.
I have a tascam 106, i cant get the metal top back on. all the pots dont line up. :( im so sad. any tips?
transformer issue is quite common for small mackie mixers
well.. yea especially when one of the rails is shorted to ground via a capacitor, which is what happened to this one.
You're making so many good videos, how about investing in a tripod?

every think about modding the 1402? i'm thinking of changing my insert jacks to direct outs. wondering if you ever looked at the schematic..
The insert jacks ARE direct outs.....
i mean post fader level direct outs
ah! you can have my Mackie CR-1604 it is routed like that!
if I follow correctly that bum transformer is putting out +18, -18, 48v DC? or is it AC and the power board is rectifying it to DC?

I got the schematics! I replaced the originals with rounded wrong model so it was diferent.
@0:22: is this an open can of soda on your workbench???!!! ;-)
They stop making them after few years
I need help .my XLR and 1/4 inch input doesn't work any idea to trouble shoot?
Mackie profx12
+Rosendo Ortega I need more details. You talking about inputs? outputs? what?
Inputs sorry. It's like if half the board doesn't function. BC the mute button light won't go on.
+THEtechknight mmmm where are you located?
Rosendo Ortega North Carolina. Used to be ohio. Anyways, I am going to see if I can get some service information, it would aid me to figure out whats going on.
Do you repair for payment if a person was to send you a board? 32 channel Mackie. Analog. Older
I wouldn't wind one myself because a lot of effort and buying that from Mackie could cost an arm and a leg... argh :(
can u send me how to repair peavey 32fx mixer please..?
I just keep pressing 3.
Sir my Mackie pro fx12 is blinking the fx
Is the answer:
