- Transposition of the great arteries (vessels) nursing NCLEX congenital heart disease defect review of the pathophysiology, nursing interventions, and treatment (TGA, TGV).
What is transposition of the great arteries (vessels)? It’s a congenital heart defect where the pulmonary artery and aorta are in SWITCHED positions. Therefore, the aorta is coming out of the right side of the heart, which is causing the right side of the heart to participant in systemic circulation. The pulmonary artery is coming out of the left side of the heart, and this is causing the left side of the heart to participant in pulmonary circulation.
Due to this switching of the great arteries, the two sides of the heart no longer work together. This causes the body to experience severe cyanosis (a bluish color to the skin from low oxygen levels).
It’s a critical congenital heart defect that requires immediate medical intervention after birth and surgery within the first month of life. According to CDC.gov, 1 on 3,330 babies are born with this condition each year in the United States.
Nursing interventions for transposition of the great arteries include: monitoring heart rate/rhythm, oxygen saturation, assess for signs of TGA, administering prostaglandin E to maintain a patent ductus arteriosus and prepare for medical intervention.
Procedures or surgery for transposition of the great arteries include balloon atrial septostomy and arterial switch procedure.

My son was born with this. The scariest time of our lives. He's 26 now and doing great. ❤ #heartmom
i was born with TGA. I had Mustard Procedure as a baby. Born in 1980. I had a heart transplant in March 2017. I now play ice hockey two days a week.
I'm 27 years old and was born with TGA, had my first surgery at six weeks old, I came here to inform myself more with what I have, thank you so much
I was born with this condition. Couple surgeries as a baby in the early 80's (in South Africa). I am now 42, and have and continue to full a full healthy life :)
I have a request for a video. Some of the most frustrating questions for me are the proper use of canes, walkers, and crutches (four-point, three-point, two-point, swing two, swing through) and going up/down the stairs with these devices. Please do a video on this because when I watch your videos the information actually sticks! Thanks keep up the great work!
I received my results today I Passed NCLEX and most definitely attribute it in part to this U Tube site and your internet site. As a UK graduate who started nursing school 30 + years ago, a lot has changed and a lot of information had been forgotten and the USA is very different to the UK.
Thanks for sites like this they are a great support
I had this when I was a baby. My heart was flipped backwards with 2 holes in jt which actually was what kept me alive. They switched the 2 arteries and my heart is still on the opposite side. Going on 26, no further surgery but a slightly enlarged aorta which they're keeping a eye on.
Mam ur teaching is so effective...it has really made all my concepts clear...m really thankful to u....God bless u😊
Wow, I think I am going to treat myself to something; I finally got an 100% on first attempt of one of your quizzes. Great video. I memorized this stuff for the NCLEX PN but now, I don't need to for the NCLEX RN. Great great video!
Nobody has ever taught me these concepts as well as you... I thank you so much ❤️🌹

Scary condition
Feeling so depressed 🙁😞... hope my baby girl can make it.
Pray and get the best medical attention they can provide her!!! I never knew about me having this until I was 20 years old and unfortunately couldn’t get any correction surgery because it would be too intensive 😔
Sherly my son was born with this 12 years ago.. here if you want to talk x
@@starrocker2009 you can't survive TGA without the surgery, are you sure this is what you had?
I was born in 1970. Had the mustard procedure in 1972. It's 2020 and I rode my bike 18 miles today. I'll never be a great athlete, but my doc says "no restrictions."
The free quiz is a whole new level OF AWESOME 🤍🤍
