  • When their unborn baby was diagnosed with a heart defect called transposition of the great arteries, Kristin and Joe turned to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. For more: heart.chop.edu
Jack Rychik, MD, and the team at the Fetal Heart Program at CHOP monitored the baby throughout the pregnancy and put a plan in place for the baby's delivery and immediate care. LJ was born at CHOP's Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit, the world’s first birthing unit within a pediatric hospital dedicated to healthy mothers carrying babies with serious and life-threatening birth defects. A few hours later he had a catheterization procedure called balloon atrial septostomy, which stabilized him for open heart surgery two days later. The surgery, called the arterial switch, was performed by Christopher E. Mascio, MD, a pediatric heart surgeon at CHOP.

And bad. You have to see a congenital cardiologist every year. And you need to keep a close eye on yourself.
