  • This one was a bit of a revamp of the original! The tempo was a bit more upbeat compared to the original version, it seemed to me. I really liked this one!

    When I was in high school. I was in Acapella choir. I had a Halloween party with some of my fellow singer friends. We trick or treated that night, and one lady seeing teenagers said, you need to work for your treat. So we sang her a Christmas Carol that we had been rehearsing for our Christmas Concert. She was super pleased at hearing us and gave us high praises (and chocolates). You talking about carolers knocking on your door and singing triggered that wonderful memory.

    Just as there’s room in rock for a variety of bands & sounds, the same is true in a capella. Home Free is a more country flavor while Pentatonix is more pop. They are both amazing and add so much to the growth and popularity of a capella music. There is room for all these amazing groups and their differences just give us more to enjoy! Thanks for reacting to them both.

    PTX and Homefree's beatboxing is a bit different because Kevin from PTX didn't learn traditionally through music teachers, so there are techniques he may not use but because of his music background as an instrumentalist he has a great sense of rhythm and creativity when creating sounds. The inhales allow him to keep going constantly for minutes which I always find amazing.

    • @joel2421
      @joel2421 Před 2 lety +7

      Nobody learns Beatboxing “traditionally through teachers”. It hasn’t even been around long enough for there to be much of a “tradition”. Kevin probably has more formal music training than any beatboxer ever since he’s a classically trained saxophonist and cellist. All of the beatboxers for the most popular Acapella groups like HomeFree & Voiceplay are very good, but Kevin is on a different level. He’s considered by people from the beatboxing world (outside of acapella) to be one of the best ever.

    • @FayolaOnline
      @FayolaOnline Před 2 lety +1

      @@joel2421 I get what your saying but the beatboxer from homefree spent 19 years developing his craft as an adult studying music, while Kevin also focused on other studies (pre-med) in less time. But yeah both are amazing. I believe the homefree beatboxer won awards for it.

    • @joel2421
      @joel2421 Před 2 lety +4

      @@FayolaOnline The Homefree beatboxer did not win any awards, people keep saying that and I keep asking them for verification and they never have any. Kevin is classically trained on two completely different instruments that aren’t even in the same family. Maybe you don’t understand how rare that is, but it’s insane. Adam Rupp is a multi-instrumentalist with a Bachelors Degree in music, and formal training on the trumpet but although he is very talented he’s not in Kevin’s class as a musician. He’s not in Kevin’s class as a beatboxer either. I’ve been listening to Hip Hop since day one and have heard all of the great beatboxers live. Dougie Fresh, Rahzell, Buffy from the Fat Boys, I’ve seen them all. I have also watched many of the Beatbox World Championships, although doing two minute routines is very different from being a vocal percussionist supporting a group. Kevin can create and hold a groove like all of the greats I named. The next time any of these other vocal percussionists supporting acapella groups do that will be their first time. Nota is the only one of the new groups I’ve seen that can groove like PTX, but they don’t really have one dedicated beatboxer. Take 6 could groove their asses off but they also never had a dedicated vocal percussionist. Adam Rupp is one of the best beatboxers in the world who support a vocal group, but he’s not on Kevin’s tier.

    Maybe they still had a lot to do before Christmas, so they decided to speed-sing through this one. That's a feeling I can very much relate to, particularly now, after having been home sick for a couple of weeks...lol
    Jokes aside, this was yet another beautiful arrangement and a feast to the ears.
    As I've heard a few songs from both PTX and Home Free, I think I start to pick up a few differences in their style, allthough vocally they are very much on the same level, but not necessariky alike. If I close my eyes and picture the two groups, the picture I get from PTX is a somewhat lively, flashy, colorful one. When I picture Home Free I get a bit more down to earth, almost astute, the-guy-down-the-road feeling. Somewhat like I picture Hollywood vs Texas...lol I dunno. Anywho, I'm always loving your reactions, Chris. They make my day(s) :-)

    In my opinion there is also a great rendition from Geoff Castellucci of this song. He is the bass singer of a acapella group called Voiceplay, which I highly recommend. Although his solo work is not completely acapella. (link: czcams.com/video/l8Sxh5E2u_g/video.html ). Voiceplay is the most theatrical of these three acapella groups. Now you need to listen to another a cappella group called Voiceplay, they are the third leg of the Trifecta of the best in a cappella. They are considered the theatre kids of a cappella, they did a cover of The Oogie Boogie song from the movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas. It's really fun to listen to, they aren't always in theatre mode and have other songs that are awesome like, Wayward Son, Man in the Mirror and many others. Give them a try. Most people like all three groups that subscribe to reactors, I very rarely compare them as they are all different in how they approach their music. It's just ear candy, eargasms and amazing music.

    Agree with many of the other commenters - it's better to do the official music video first, then the live versions. And the second one here, from Jimmy Kimmel, is much better in terms of sound mixing and balancing. Shame you didn't listen to it as well. Also, you've reacted to tons of their videos - surely it's time to learn their names? I'm surprised, for someone who clearly knows something about music, that you prefer HF's beatboxer. In terms of sound, that's a matter of taste - I can't get into HF at all, for instance. But Kevin is by far superior to his HF equivalent in terms of technical skills as well as range of genres. And finally: why compare to start with? I don't understand this urge a lot of people have to compare groups that do rather different things. Just sit back and enjoy the diversity - you don't actually have to choose!

    Folks here are being rather polite about it, but I can guess it irritated several people. Not because you like one group more than the other, everyone has their favorites, but because you decided to compare the two groups (with PTX being the less respected by you)...on their own video. Had you said you personally like the beatboxer of HF over PTX on one of HF's videos, it would have been fine.

I guess I prefer a band with a wider range like ptx that cam handle with ease virtually every genre and song, home free I find limited to being a country band primarily. And I dislike country. Lol but I'll also say I let ptx record speak for itself. Outselling, most award winning and most popular acapella band out there still today, esp after winning sing off but record label passed, how much have they kicked themselves over that choice? To me and I think most ptx is on a plane higher than any other acapella band out there, with superior vocals, beat boxing, range and creativity. Even the artists whose songs they covered were blown away such as Brian may snd Paul Simon. I read in an interview pith Brian that had Freddie lived long enough he'd have loved their version of bohemian rhapsody and would have been Freddie's ringtone had he a cell phone. Lol
