  • We need to talk about batteries. Battery technology is by far the biggest thing holding back EVs from mass adoption. Here we discuss the current state of battery technology and how it compares to gas.

    Its also because of regulations... My guy....like yeah you can get it registered but really class 2 is 20mph yeah i can run that fast 😂 needs too be 40mph or 50...amps need to be like 60a. Amp hours should be like 30ah. Its ridiculous how we haven't gotten there at all wired and other brands barely go to 35a. Ebikes should be 1k for low end 20mph and then 30 to 50 should be near 2k.... Not effing 5k-10k. I could make a cheaper bike😂

    I also want to see the strength of motors both hub & mid drive get a lot higher in the smaller/lighter weight motors. A bump of 3-4x the Newton meters would be such an awesome thing. Things seem to progress at a snails pace in ebike motor technology.

      most manufacturers wont do this because then you have to switch it to a single speed with a motorcycle chain because all that torque would eat bicycle chains too fast.

    GREAT video. I had a blog about this stuff back in 2014. It's pretty interesting isn't it? And now, we have options we didn't really have back in 2014. At least, not as
    affordably.

    Energy density is EVERYTHING. Our understanding of energy and applying it to society is the main thing responsible for our 'modernity'. And the more we can understand about energy and keep applying it to our engineering the better things will be for more people. Cheaper and cleaner and more efficient.

  • @handlworks

    Great video! Totally agree. Also, refill speed. Pumping physical gasoline doesn't cause tons of heat issues, and nobody needs to swap gas tanks.

  • @buffalomind6838
    @buffalomind6838 Před 2 měsíci +2

    I agree. Once you can get the equivalent of 10,000 watt hours in a 10 amp battery well know we’ve made a great stride. At the moment it is not practical in needing so much mass/extra weight of battery as that kills the maneuverability and the distance one can get as it again weighs so much.

    When you double the efficiency you are only effectively gaining 50%. Its your starting point from previous iterations not from zero.
    We see a four fold jump? Thats when we're cooking! The lithium iron mentioned is only around 18% and while nice, its no earth shaker

  • @Altema22
    @Altema22 Před 2 měsíci

    It will be a while before the high energy density trickles down to us, but it will be welcome. I think the Wh/kg densities of lithium ion are a bit higher than the examples, as my own Tesla cell battery pack is 249.2 watt hours per kilogram, and that's based on actual measurements. I run dual Tesla packs when I need the range or power, and am usually the guy to tow other e-bikes back after a long group ride, but I'd love to go lighter.

    Do you think that charging batteries at home is less expensive than buying gasoline. More specifically for how much energy you get per cent you spend on gas and on the electric meter box.

    Great Report b/c batteries ARE the deal we got to contend with & about 2-3 months ago I saw where Chinese factories who'd
    gone "All In" on setup to manufacture are now finally catching up w/ demands? But we know that'll mean 2-3 plants will all
    mysteriously burn down so they can keep us paying top prices? Afghanistan has 1 of the largest know deposits pf lithium
    in the world & when we went into their nation I thought(wrongly) that we American's would be seeing some fruits of all the
    money/bloodshed from that war but Nope, we guarded their poppies & lithium for recreational drug use...go figure ??

    Graphene batteries will be on the market soon Rumble Motors already has one. Is it without flaws, safe to put in the garage of a house full of people. Idk probably not 🤷‍♂️ imo there has not been a market for big pack batteries, yea there was cars and other electronics but now since Ebikes & EVs in general are really gaining traction, they have a reason to dump a bunch of money into developing a battery.

    I think we will see a lit more single passenger or driver only EV's for local transport & gas for our heavy sun's. I ride a trike with a BBSD 1000W middrive set up I go around 35mph & I can get enough of it. 10,000 miles since 2013. So I stared at the beginning with a Bionix 48v 350w all the way to BBSD 52V 1000W. & before that I was into rc cars mostly lipo stuff. Battery quality has been upgraded by about a 1000 in my opinion. Give 5 more years of development & I think it will be competitive with gas.
    Porsche is actually making a bio fuel that is carbon neutral which is very promising also they have they best EV's on the market look out for advancements on their platforms.

    for me it's all about lifepo4 pouch cells since they won't turn into a nuclear explosion like li-ion haha but they are heavier and nobody really puts them in ebike batteries yet :( . Don't forget the battery tech might not hold many watt hours but is uses energy at least 200% more efficiently than a gallon of gas running through a generator or car.

    For your home appliances you need to build your own system you'll get MUCH better performance, you'll need a few glass panels, a 3kw inverter, and most importantly, the batteries, buy yourself a couple of 300AH 12V LI-ION batteries from a reputable dealer, place those 2 batteries in parallel and you'll net yourself a capacity of around 8000 watt hours.

  • @WaffleStaffel
    @WaffleStaffel Před 2 měsíci +2

    Electric vehicle sales have slumped, with dealers stuck with year-old inventory rotting in their lots. EV sales peaked during the illegal lockdowns. Batteries will evolve, but electricity is not going to take over our roadways. Batteries just shift the consumption and environmental destruction to somewhere out of sight, out of mind. Batteries are the fuel tank, not the fuel. Electric cars also weight a *lot* more than ICE vehicles, compounding the problem. People who think EVs are an environmental net positive are also the type who would promote nuclear energy, while giving no thought to the financial and environmental expenses of mining, transporting, and refining *tons* of earth to recover grams of fissile material, nor to dealing with the waste. Just because the nuclear plant itself pumps out energy without spewing exhaust into the atmosphere doesn't mean it's a "green" process.
    If any environmental gains are to be made with EVs, it will be with bikes and scooters like these.
