My family (from Afghanistan) has something called "Mantu" (man-two) and it's essentially steamed dumplings with beef or lamb and onions inside and seasoned yoghurt plopped on top and then dotted (very little amount) with some sort of oily tomato sauce. And, boy, is it god-damn delicious. My mum makes the dough herself so it's a lot healthier and she tends to add less oil to it and usually serves it as a side to dinner when guests are over.
Just reading that makes my mouth drool despite the fact that my tummy is already too full of bento food ...
Majora So is my family! Except my mom makes hers with ground turkey to make it healthier - and sometimes she'll put peppers in it instead of leek. She also thinks I fold them wrong but I don't even care xD

Majora I wish my mom knew how to make it. I'm half Afghani and we go to this restaurant in L.A. a lot that makes those and I used to eat them. however, I stopped because I want them healthier...like how ur mom does it. lol

Its actually pretty easy to make. My mom learned how to make Gyoza when working at a Japanese restaurant and now she makes it on special ocassions at home. I love helping her, its funner than making our family. We're Mexican but I would eat Japanese food all day if I could.

I'm sure that they were living in a different country, though, for much longer. When you are young you learn languages best. Some foreigners may live decades in the U.S. and still not know a lick of English (like my grandmother).
They know how to pronounce Gumiho, but they enunciate it as gummyhoe so maybe they are doing the same when they say mandu
