You are invaluable! Your advice & demos are so educational. As a female and living alone, I need this info so badly. My house is in Reno and front of house faces the strongest negative elements: snow, rain, very high winds, and brutal sun. I now need a pro House painter and you're teaching me what I've been doing wrong and right, in the meantime.
    Thank you, sooooo much!

I am painting my 1900 square foot home this weekend. I am using sherwin Williams everlast paint in dark blue. I am using a Graco X5 airless sprayer for the first time. I caulked a bunch last weekend but I didn’t do everything that you would. I just don’t have the patience to do it. Lol. But I got most of the stuff that really needed it. My wife will be helping. I am power washing tonight and then masking tomorrow and then we will start painting Saturday. The weather has been great here in Oklahoma and now it’s gonna be in the upper 80’s to low 90’s this weekend with wind gusts up to 16! It was supposed to be zero wind and cool but they changed it. Hopefully I don’t run into any issues and we can finish this weekend. Thanks for all the help you provide. I wouldn’t have had the first clue about what to due without your help.

I spend a day or two at the end just walking around the house over and over looking for anything I missed or can improve, so very little gets by me, and it is a bit irritating when they think you're not seeing something. It's like you mowing the grass and in the middle someone comes and points out the section of yard you've yet to mow, saying "you missed some" lmao.

Never used white lightening caulk. Sascho products are more favorite caulk. Big stretch is amazing and seems to go on and on without drying out and cracking. For areas where I need the most waterproof as possible, lexel is the go to. But not as easy to tool out as the big stretch.

Hi Chris, thank you so much for everything you do. You are my go to painters when ever I take on a painting project inside and out. We'll it's that time again when I have to paint the outside of the house. We live in California in a manufactured house with siding where the panels meet side by side. So the house likes to shift with weather conditions and the caulk where the siding meets separates. I'm sure I used the wrong kind of caulk. Can you recommend a good caulk that is for this type that's stretches? Thanks again for your time!

  • @saywhat578
    @saywhat578 Před 4 lety +4

When caulking the nail heads.... Use a putty knife and go against the grain of the wood so it will leave the grain In the caulked spot, wipe the edges smooth. Looks better than the messy finger wipe. And while we're on caulking... Why in the heck don't you use a good grade caulk like Vulkem ( Urethane base) or OSI ( oil base ) for the bigger gaps for better results, instead of backer rod and latex/acrylic caulk that doesn't have a good grab or elasticity. The caulk I mentioned above not only has a flex rate up to 1/4 " but when you run a clean bead (not fingering the caulk) it looks phenomenal! Also some of the caulk I mentioned has texture in it so when caulking on the surface you have less flashing because of that texture.

  • @New-Breed-Drywall-And-Paint

Hey Chris , quick question . I recently got slow with work so I went to help another painter . He was using the sherwin Williams spackle to float all the areas where the wood chipped back after we scrapped . I didn’t say nothing cause it’s not my job and I didn’t want to be “ that guy “ but I felt like it was just for sure going to fail not to mention he was priming the bare spots with latex primer before we applied the spackle and then sealed it with a latex paint close to the color we were going to use . Was I wrong
Thinking it was going to fail ? Will it hold up ? It was a lot of spackle almost floating full boards at times . I felt when that wood expands and shrinks that spackle will not do the same and fail .

I have an older house, built in 1953, with painted cedar shakes. Many of the shakes have gaps that run vertically between two adjacent shakes. Ditto, ditto, ditto on new guys caulking around the entryway. The only thing worse is a new guy, young guy, who's also a relative so you're cautious about giving guidance. : )
Seriously though, this is especially true with the newer, more dynamic, flexing caulks that protect you from splitting. These caulks are great, but they skin over into a rubbery texture that is very hard to sand off and redo. The skin tends to coagulate faster into a granular texture that doesn't smooth well. Hot weather, hot storage amplifies these qualities. Lastly, because of it's flex, it's not as good for smoothing over glops with vinyl or other fillers, unless it's touching a short run of siding that won't move. When you sell that house the entry experience sets the tone. When you wife has friends over to see the new wallpaper, same thing.

I'm 71 years old and I am about to " try " and paint my single story desert home. I'm on a limit income.
The reason I am painting it is because you can't find anyone that wants to work in this town. Well, that is unless you have Big $$ and a BIG job for them to do. I just bought a Graco Mangnum Prox 17 airless spray painter. I'm not in the best of health, but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta go right? I guess my biggest question is:
Can you spray paint a house, sections at a time. Like one side and then another even though you may not be able to paint the whole thing at one time. I know you are a pro and a lot younger and you can probably knock out a house in 1 or may 2 days after doing all the prep work. I have a pressure washer and all the tools. I just need to pace myself, can that be done? Thanks for making the videos. :o)

I'm currently an apprentice painter, so I may not be fully qualified to answer this question. however, you can do sections at a time as long as the is a stopping point. the stopping point must be like the end of a wall or something not in the middle cause you will get a shut mark ( a visible starting and stopping point) in the paint.
      hope this helps

Hi Chris great video. I have a quick question for you regarding fascia boards. If i install a screw or nail in fascia board would you recommend using wood filler or some other material other than caulk or should I always use caulk on that? Secondly, im assuming for any joints where the fascia board transitions from one board to another the crack should be filled with caulk? Thank you for your help. I have a few nails that popped out of the fascia board and I will either replace with nails or screws (might go with screws) but needed to know what is the best filler to use since your the pro and have been doing this for 100 years :)

@@Idahopainter thanks for the quick reply but just to confirm you are stating you would recommend this caulking product to fill the screw holes?

Good video, Chris. What are the circumstances when you should remove old caulk before installing new caulk.?

When priming with oil or latex are you always keeping strokes straight? I hate horizontal strokes on vertical grains and people who swirl into corners. The strokes show through. Not on my job.

Is the 100% caulking vs not something you have to suggest or educate most clients on? Or is that a decision you make yourself as a painter and send em a bill? I just started working for a small painting company and they Mickey Mouse a lot of stuff, i want to do things right on my end. First thing they do is caulk around all the windows and the siding and trim

Do you caulk horizontal gaps in the bottom of siding where it overlaps the other siding boards? My house has hardiplank cement siding that was installed poorly, and has a lot of gaps.

Like J fill said, absolutely not. The boards need to breath or they end up expanding awkwardly if you caulk them. leaving a wave effect along the wall. Also one of my previous jobs i had to caulk a entire house like yours because the original painter did, it just ends up causing more work. Every few years you'll have cracks forming completely negating what you were trying to do in the first place. Would you rather have Gaps even across the entire wall or random unaesthetic cracks in multiple areas?

I'm looking at building a house near the gulf coast of Texas and everybody is saying Hardie Plank. It that the best siding? You've seen all kinds of home siding and how they wear. What would you recommend and why?

Yes hardie plank is the best!

I have hardie and I live in central Oklahoma. Mine is about 13 years old. It was painted by a painter not from hardie themselves. It has faded and many of the pieces have broken due to water hitting them. If you could I would suggest using brick or stone around the bottom. Otherwise I like the siding very well.

What kind of caulk would you recommend using for board and batten exterior trim before painting?
