    If it didn't remove the disk drive, I'd say this is a great mod. That said, you have a good point about systems whose drive is broken or won't read disks...in that case hey you're not losing anything.

    • @TheRetroFuture
      @TheRetroFuture  Před 8 měsíci +24

      Yeah that was my thoughts. If you have a faulty PSP this could be a cheap bit of fun and be useful for some games!

    • @bigbangbot-SuperSqank
      @bigbangbot-SuperSqank Před 8 měsíci +7

      Also, if you remove the UMD drive, it is possible to fit in a much larger/higher capacity battery into the PSP (I've at least seen in be done with 2000/3000 models). I've heard you can fit up to a 5000mAh battery in a PSP and that will give you way more battery life than any regular PSP battery. The PSP also uses more battery when using the UMD drive compared to running games off external storage.
      So if you do have a broken UMD drive or you don't mind sacrificing the UMD drive, a battery mod might be more worth it.

    • @chamoo232
      @chamoo232 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@bigbangbot-SuperSqank I did that on my PSP-2000 but you also need the little board that's inside a PSP battery. I used a really cheap aftermarket battery and unfortunately the charging board in there is total crap. It doesn't really check the voltage and works more on a timer. It goes from 100% to 10% in 1 and a half hour and then it blinks for another half hour. At 0% it still goes but the PSP goes into sleep mode every minute. You really need the board from a real Sony battery to do this mod properly.

    Component cables are a thing for PSP 2000 and 3000.

    Please don't get rid of the original battery - I'm sure you already know, but all/most PSP replacement batteries have inferior control circuits to the original that crash in strange ways when USB charging is on. The replacement control PCB then needs resetting by shorting a couple of pins. Solution: disassemble the original Sony battery, salvage the control circuit and replace the lithium cell.

I replaced my motherboard when I bricked it with a new motherboard from ebay without any major instructions during the myspace era. Looks like the board had two chips, likely one translating the video and the other an HDMI scaler. It's a real shame too, because they are likely buffering frames before sending them to the scaler for processing. The only real use I could see with this is to make it easier to capture output for recording video or streaming, but most peeps in that boat are using other methods (component video, emulation, etc.) already...I'd love to see Woozle take a shot at this: His GBA consolizer is fantastic, and he could probably pull off a no cut mod too...

    I kinda feel like using a male micro to female full HDMI adapter would almost be preferable to a cable that has male micro and male full on the ends; with the male-micro to female-full cable, you can use any HDMI cable to connect it to your TV, whereas if you get the micro-to-full male-to-male cable, the length of that cable is all you've got - so if you find yourself with a need to position the PSP further from the TV, you can do it easily with the male-to-female adapter by using a longer cable - which can be repurposed for something else as and when necessary - whereas the male-to-male cable will only really ever be useful for your PSP, and the handful of fondleslabs with micro-HDMI out.

    Upgrade that PSP needs is possibility to stream from PC. Nobody did it but it would actually make PSP better console than many modern "retro games and streaming" handhelds

    I got that same 1000 value pack from back then it is my first psp I later got the slim but the slim doesn't work no more had to get rid of it sadly oh well but still I took that thing everywhere and it was a good media player on the go. I even remember doing the pandora battery mod too to mine so I can unbrick my friends psps lol.

    If I had a clean 1000 model like that I would've gone the PSPi route instead, lol.

    0:39 Oh, I beg to differ sir. A lot of us actually appreciate one of the best handhelds ever made. I'm especially fond of the 1000 model for it's sturdy built quality. They don't make em like this anymore.

    Honestly I think fitting a bigger battery in that space is a better mod. I just use the Av cables and it plays on the big screen fine.

    I can see this being pretty good for screen capturing. For live gameplay... not so much.

    My PSP-1000 was my first real foray into modding. What a neat little device. Those UMDs were garbage, I got rather good at regluing the UMD enclosures.

      Most of the time they broke going in and out of the game cases. That design is so stupid.

      The white UMDs with the clear center are the worst, when mine break I get clear cases and they stay together better but I have a 1001 vita on 3.60 with Enzo and adrenaline now so I only use UMDs to dump them to my computer and copy them to my vita and CECHL-01 PS3 on evilnat 4.89.
