Help! My bobbin thread won't connect/ what happens in the bobbin when you have a timing issue?

  • This video addresses the issue of the bobbin thread not connecting to the upper thread in the Brother sewing machine LX3817. I also show you what happens if the problem has to do with the timing of the machine.
    I am showing only 2 possible solutions and hopefully one of these will be able the answer to your issue. I have linked a video by @LRN2DIY in the comments that I think does a great job at showing how to fix the timing, if that is the problem you are facing.
    💜Hope to sew with you soon!

    Hi everyone! I am sharing this video by @lrn2diy for those of you who are interested in fixing the timing in your machine yourself 👉🏾czcams.com/video/fzhR6PNlI4E/video.html
    The timing on my machine isn’t off, so I didn’t make this video to show how to fix it, but I don’t mind sharing resources that may help.

    I grew up watching my grandmother and mother sew and I literally can’t even start threading the needle on a sewing machine! Lol! But I’ve always wondered how the bottom and top thread “met” and made a stitch and no one has ever been able to explain it to make sense to me until THIS video! 40 years this has been the 8th wonder of the world to me. Lol!!! Now you have made me excited to learn to thread this antique sewing machine and learn to sew!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge - and for taking your machine apart! Lol!! You’re awesome!!

    First must say I very much like your videos. The camera work, narration and instructions are excellent. Hoping you make many more of your wonderful videos for us so we can be happy with our sewing machines of any brand. A feature I especially like about brother sewing machines is the "quick set bobbin" which allows to begin sewing without drawing up the bobbin thread when the thread is passed through the quick set groove and cut at the end. Page 21 of the manual explains about using the quick set bobbin feature and also about not using the quick set feature to draw up the bobbin thread as you explained as well for times when a long bobbin tail (with a long upper thread tail) is needed for sewing darts or making gathers.

  • @Melissa0774
    @Melissa0774 Před 4 lety +1

    I have a Brother LX3817 and I have a problem with it that I can't find anyone else talking about anywhere online, CZcams, or anywhere else. I figured out that it's hard to catch the bobbin if you cut it to short with the cutter. So that's not my issue. My problem is that the bobbin thread doesn't seem to settle into the right position, once it does get caught by the needle. The needle catches the bobbin thread fine, but when I start to sew, the bobbin jams. I put it in, facing the right way. The thing is, I don't know anything about sewing machines because this is the first one I ever used since middle school. I see in this video, that when you caught the lower thread, it settled across the top left side of the bobbin, just like it does in my machine. And I see that it appears to be in that position in other brands of machines, as well in other people's videos when they're ready to sew. I wasn't sure if the bobbin thread was supposed to settle into that position until I saw in this video that it is. But on my machine, I've been having to use a dental pick and a pair of pliers to move the lower thread from the top of the bobbin, down to onto the right side of it. (I could probably use tweezers, but I don't have any.) If I don't do it, the machine jams. It's very difficult and annoying and I dread having to change thread colors because it takes forever and if I don't do it just right, then the lower tension is to loose. But if I do it right, the machine works fine. Does anyone else have this problem? Do you understand what I'm talking about? I hope my explanation isn't to confusing.

    • @Sewintoitlessons
      @Sewintoitlessons  Před 4 lety

      Hi! What’s happening with your bobbin is defiantly interesting. I actually just recorded a Q&A session with a certified sewing technician and we talked about issues with the bobbin and bobbin thread. We used my Brother LX3817 as an example. I hope the information there will be helpful to you. Be on the look out for that upload. Of course, there are situations that a professional may need to take a look at the machine. I would love for you to keep me updated about this issue, and I will definitely share any info I receive.

    • @Melissa0774
      @Melissa0774 Před 4 lety

      @@Sewintoitlessons Thanks for responding. What would really help me is if you would make a video where you show what the bobbin does after you load it and begin to sew. I want to see where the bobbin thread is supposed to go, once you've picked it up with the needle and are ready to sew, and then as you start to sew. I'm still not sure if the thread is supposed to sit on top of the bobbin, or wind itself around it. I know that as you're sewing, the thread goes up over the top of the bobbin and winds down around it. I'm just not sure what position it's supposed to start in. I'd like to see a video where you leave the cover off as you pick up the lower thread and begin to sew a few stitches. Point out where the bottom thread is before you start sewing and how it moves as you go along. You'd probably have to use a small piece of fabric that won't cover up the bobbin area, so it might be difficult to do. I'd really appreciate this because no one else has ever done it. I'm sure that whatever the issue is with my machine, it's probably something very simple that someone who knows what they're doing could fix in five minutes with a screw driver. But I don't trust the local sewing and vacuum guy in my area because I thought he was kind of rude when I had taken a vacuum to him and would probably charge me to much money.

      @@Sewintoitlessons not all the time but today I am. I'm an insulator and so sometimes we cover our insulation with heat resistant fabric to create pads to wrap around hot pipes.

      Wow, it's amazing how sewing shows up in so many areas of life. I can see, though, how the sewing might throw off your workflow. I'm glad these videos are helping.

    I had the same problem with my Brother PE770, I did all these tweaks which are very well explained. My problem was an ever so slightly bent needle, carefully bent it straight and it grabbed the first time and im back in business.

    • @Sewintoitlessons
      @Sewintoitlessons  Před 3 lety

      William Mroczkowski, yes, a bent needle will cause problems. It's great that you were able to catch the issue!

    HI! another problem you could be having (if your sewing has jammed before and you just cut the thread from the bobbin then and there without foreseeing that could be potentially an issue bc u were a beginner like me) take tweezers and pull out any small pieces of thread that may be blocking the thread from coming up. You ofc could take apart your machine and pull it out much easier but if you’re anything like me and know you aren’t very good at putting things back together then tweezers are the way to go!

    I've been asking other U2bers if the bobbin, when coming over the top, should be to the right or the left, and getting no answers. Derp, counter/clockwise! Thank you for defining the obvious. I just couldn't find the right words. LOL

    • @juliehuntley4263
      @juliehuntley4263 Před 11 měsíci

      Nope. It helped but my thread is getting stuck in the bobbin case! So when I’m done sewing I can’t pull the material out from under the needle foot. I open my bobbin case and the needle thread is all caught up in there. There is a piece of loose thread too!
