It shouldn't be businesses. It should be well funded, and comfortable community centers. Places like libraries, or park cabins, only where It's open all hours, all ages are served, talking is encouraged, and food and drink can be brought in or purchased there (but the person selling it doesn't own the place, taxpayers do).

Anything Public Sector won't work and will decline into mediocrity. History shows no precedent for it and, since Covid, many public libraries around me close early (it's easier for them) and have not gone back to pre-Covid opening hours.

I wonder how to break this up. People (me included in all fairness) tend to only leave the house with purpose. Shopping, food with a set group, fitness, or going solo to sort out some feelings or similar. We don't want to interrupt any of these situations, as we know from ourselves there is a high chance we don't want to be interrupted.

Often times when I go to a café, I will look for tables with one person sitting there, and ask to join them. In part this is due to wanting to be more efficient in space, but also to approach a complete stranger with the goal of interacting in the smallest of ways. Sometimes this can blossom into great conversation, but not always. It doesn’t always have to be that you’re having your mind opened by others every day, but I think feeling flexible enough to be open for the opportunity is important.

Here's a thought: with sufficient automation, there's a possibility of going to a single-place society. If all the work is done by computers, there won't be second places either. Without investment in third places, there's the possibility of developing a severely isolated society, like something out of dystopian science fiction.

As a remote worker this is already my reality. The isolation is a challenge

I've been obsessed with this since reading about the artists in the early 1900s in Paris. I had no word for this, until coming across the concept of The Third Place. Pre-WW1 and Pre-Screens, it's incredible how social we were and how often people saw each other.

    "What will it take?"
I guess imo the most important, though not only factor, is wealth. If u have enough money to not work 10hours a day, you can consider sliding a third place in your schedule. Modern entertainment and "socializing" options thru social media creating decidingly one of the biggest hurdles for the whole thing, but I think the priority should still be reducing wealth disparity and improvement of living conditions because social media is often an escape too, an easy mind-shut-down button for tired, stressed or simply comfort-seeking populations.

There is an error early on in the video… forgetting that pre WW2 most European people would go to church at least once a week, many several times a week however briefly.

Isn't low cost of entry a facet of third places?
If you have to spend 20+ dollars to buy drinks food and tips it gatekeeps it as a place to just go hang out.
It still is a place to go/thing to do, just expensive.
