Kamikaze Hearts Q&A w/ Juliet Bashore and Sharon Mitchell

Last week, we were joined (virtually) by writer/director Juliet Bashore and actress Sharon Mitchell to discuss their cinéma vérité film, Kamikaze Hearts.
By turns mesmerizing and unsettling, Kamikaze Hearts is both a fascinating record of pre-gentrification San Francisco’s X-rated underground and an intense, searing love story. The film offers a disturbing glimpse of the modification of bodies, feelings, and lives.
Juliet Bashore is a filmmaker, known for her feature film Kamikaze Hearts and her documentary work The Battle of Tuntenhaus, about the radical queer squat in Berlin. She has her own production company, producing and directing projects for PBS, London’s Channel 4 and Miramax, among others.
Sharon Mitchell is a sexologist and former porn film actor, director and addiction counselor. After making Kamikaze hearts Sharon Mitchell continued in the adult entertainment industry until 1995 when she was attacked by a crazed fan and nearly killed. She immediately kicked drugs and went on to higher education and got a bachelor's degree in psychology. She went on to get a master's degree in public health and eventually a PhD in human sexuality specializing in HIV research. Dr Mitchell opened the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare foundation, an HIV testing and health center for the adult entertainment industry and local neighborhoods for over 13 years. Dr Mitchell is retired now but still volunteers teaching safe sex to the local high school and also volunteering at the County health department running groups on drugs and alcohol.
