  • Kpop has grown exponentially! As a Korean, it's crazy when you look around the world and see Kpop's popularity. Being proud of it, I try to explain the roots and history of Kpop in an 'OverSimplified' way! From SeoTaiji to BTS.

    The main purpose of this video is to provide a 'quick overview' or 'summary' of what(who) happened in Kpop overtime. It's focus is to quickly skim through big events, groups, and some rough context of Kpop history, rather than to specifically explain the aspects/traits of Kpop or achievements of particular groups. Any additional info that you would like to provide is more than welcomed in the comments. Any fan-war related behavior or comments will be deleted.
    +edit)
    1. 0:39 / 00:59 this is an incorrect map that states 'Sea of Japan'. The correct name is 'East Sea'.
    1. 0:44 Korea was divided even before the war by the Soviet Union and the US. The Cold War had already began and the Korean war was a 'period(full stop)' that ultimately divided the country into today's North and South Korea.
    2. 16:40 Red Velvet was the first Kpop idol to perform in Pyeongyang among the 2-3rd gen of Kpop. 1st: Sechskies, Fin.K.L / 2nd: Shinhwa, Baby Vox

      @UCDb4ce0lP_gDfOn2ekeez-g although I respect your opinion, remember that PSY made KPOP to be known. I still remember Ellen and Britney talking about his song and dancing on it. As well Obama's mention about SHINee. Let's respect the work done by the rest of people and their contributions to what KPOP become today. There is no deny that BTS went big but there is no need to disregard the steps paved by other KPOP groups. 😌🙏

      @explore.express.love.3483 Před rokem +22

      @@yessymoreno5967 if by 'famous' you mean when they blew up exceptionally, then let's take the works since 2020
      1. BE- not one track in the 'BE' album was generic, production wise or lyrically. Infact it had the most creative and unique sounds, all the more appreciable since this album had heavy involvement of all members in the production and writing and not just the rappers. It was critically acclaimed by critics worldwide with very high ratings.
      2. The three English singles- Having listened to a lot from their very vast discography, there are songs that are much more superior in comparison to the success of these songs. But for it to be completely different from the styles they have previously done, it was good to have light hearted Funk songs that showcase the diversity in comparison to all the dense topics they keep hitting.
      3. The 3 new tracks of PROOF album- lyrics narrating their history.
      Yet to come was pop blended with old school hip hop.
      Run BTS was a mix of various styles of hiphop, and edgy vocals.
      For youth is a slow moody yet upbeat song which really pulled of even more with live vocals during shows.
      4. Japanese singles (stay gold and your eyes tell) are such pretty and soothing songs with a steady build of vocals that bts's Japanese songs always give.
      5. Special mentions
      (Subunits, collabs and solos):
      •My universe- by Coldplay and BTS
      •Stay alive, CHAKHO- by Jungkook (Prod. Suga)
      •That That- by Psy (Prod and Feat. Suga)
      •My You- by Jungkook
      •Left and Right- by Charlie Puth and Jungkook
      •Jack In the Box (album)- by Jhope [Generic? Musically, the tracks in here were such a risky move, with pure hip hop rock elements, super dark, hard hitting, real and personal lyrics, stacked to form a story. This was significant in kpop for an idol to to talk about such dark topics unabashedly. Something that always stood huge with bts and clearly the member still hasn't lost that essence.
      Check out jhope at lollapalooza.
      If you mean pre 2020, cause in terms of popularity they made it to the west and western awards by 2017, then this comment won't end explaining all the ways in which they have been anything but generic, musically, artistically or creatively.

    Seo Taiji is really special because he is not just special in terms of music, but he has completely changed the Korean music industry. The concept of comeback comes from Seo Taiji. Before there was a concept of comeback, the singer didn't have any special authority, but Seo Taiji didn't want to do it. He wanted a cycle of making songs with plenty of rest, working for some time, relaxing and making songs. That's why I did it, but it was possible because it was Seo Tai-ji, and after that, everyone followed suit and became a culture.

      What makes BTS special (besides all the amazing things that make them special 😂) is that they have broken into mainstream media. That is arguably the biggest obstacle foreign artists face. But they haven't broken it just for them, they're allowing other groups to come through too.

    Omg I remember TVXQ, BigBang, Wondergirls, SNSD - that 2nd gen era was when people around the world started to find out about Kpop. It was our little secret treasure. Then 3rd gen idols walked a little more to make themselves known in international media too. I think 4th gen idols will go even farther.
    Every generation paved the way for the next. To know if a generation did their job well, you have to look at the achievements of the next one. If their juniors go farther than them in terms of market, it means the paved the way the right way.

I know you had some puzzling goal of covering the whole subject in 20 minutes, but it took me so long to watch it, with all the pausing and trying to go back to catch the part I wanted to see, or read, along with developing a bit of a headache/eyestrain.
      The timing is probably some viewer attention span thing ( though Kdrama and BTS fans such as myself don't seem to mind), but perhaps it could have been in 2 parts, like 1st and 2nd generation, with a pace where more of the info could be grasped and retained.
      I look forward to your explanatory videos. I'm interested in phenomenal BTS, not Kpop, but wanted some general overview, which this was. I also don't favor rap, but found your videos on Ddaeng and Ugh interesting, as well as Idol, the Jung MOTS info, what seemed like a simple fluff piece in Boy With Luv, and others. BTS really shock me.. I wasn't even a fan of them.. as I start to look at their achievement year by year ( I noticed them in 2017), their achievement had set a high standard of becoming global recognition. What really caught my attention was they sing in their mother language (Korea) and people from all over continent fascinated at them. 🤔 Plus, each of them were talented individual. A big applause for the fans base (ARMY) that always keep support Big Hit Entertainment and BTS. What really caught my attention was the way they portrait mv in a strong visual+choreography+lyric+beat. I wish to know what are the main factor cause BTS to widely recognize 🤔 ? Coming from an Asian country? I bet all the other country wants to know how they produce a band group such BTS ?

    • @shookmin_rv1376
      @shookmin_rv1376 Před 2 lety +6

      Everything. Their message, lyrics, choreo, songs, visuals, their personality, the way they treat their fans, their company's marketing strategy, etc. and most importantly, how hardworking and talented they are. As you can see, bts started from the **very** bottom during their early days and worked their @$$es out for years just to reach where they are today. BTS is just a group you can never imagine. It's also just LUCK! We know that it's nearly impossible to reach this global impact without anyone backing you, but they tried their very best to reach their peak (they still haven't reach their peak yet till this day..) I guess it is also because they existed in the era where technology has evolved like social media, that became more accessible for a much wider audience. It also has something to do with the society, BTS knows how to blend in and catch up with the trend that maked them more and more recognized. BUT, even if you're an artist that has been born in this modern world, your future still isn't predictable, cuz sometimes, there are people who are THERE for a reason. So, we can't blame BTS for other artists's failure, like as what SUGA (bts member) said in his song: "crazy to think that you think that my success has a connection to your failure." I don't know the exact lyrics but it's something like that :) so yea, in short, Bang Si-Hyuk's formula was really something else.

    As a new KPOP listener from Spain I loved this video, it is great to have a wide context on the genre and found it super interesting. The first kpop song I ever listened to, before I even knew what kpop was, was Nobody by Wonder Girls. I found it on youtube when the platform was brand new. Me and my sister were 12 years old and couldnt stop dancing to it. A few months ago I watched BTS Carpool Karaoke with James Corden and since then I am totally hooked :')

      Interesting! I'm from Austria and I personally like many Kpop groups as a music lover of pretty much every genre. What is your prefered genre or music? (curious)
      My introduction to Kpop was Big Bang, Super Junior, 2PM, SHINee, BTOB and EXO back in 2012 and I've been hooked to many groups since, including BTS.
      My current favourites are TXT, Monsta X, EXO, WayV (and all of NCT), Seventeen, Ateez and Dreamcatcher though and have been for a while now, especially TXT since their music, lyrics and stories resonate a lot with me.
