Nobody in football ever was as good as Messi was in 2012. Messi was still the best player in 13 and in 14. Hell 15 too.
The amazing thing about this is Messi has been in his prime about 12 years, almost all his career, while other great players had been 4-5 years on his prime.
He is still in his prime, look at his goals and assists this year, number of dribles etc. Problem is that Barca's team overall is a lot weaker without Xavi and Iniesta, they had bad transfer policy, coach replacements, and now they are really unstable team that fully depends on Messi.

When he was younger he lost the ball more often than today ... That is a fact... The difference is at that time the team was so good they created chances all the time and the team was build around him letting him do his thing whenever he wanted without thinking about consequences...
Now a day he has much more responcibility, he loses the ball, Big problem. He hasnt a teammate like Xavi or iniesta or fabregas that he can just pass the ball in any situation and Barca remains in possession.
Busquedes is pretty much the only of the old guard, same with pique.
Of course he has lost pace, nobody denys that, the thing is now a days he gives the tact and just like argentina, Barca lacks creativity in the middlefield specialy at the back, defenders are not creative enought and have not enought pass accuracy just like the rest of the back middlefield. To say Messi isnt is in his prime is incorrect since this season was ok (champions league still waiting) and the season before specialy was really good. The main problem is chance creation and the lack of good strikers /wingers and a good central midfield... Though even in the prime Barca with all the stars we know and love they often blow big chances, they allways were creating new ones with others stars taking the attention of MEssi. Now a days less chance creation and Luisito, and anyone of the mercenaries like Dembele or coutinho and those stars, Barca players that for some odd reason are just put on the departure line to save earnings, transfer money for the next big flop star are not getting their time to build the team they want...
Messi is protected in Barcelona because of his legacy and importance in the team, maybe this is the sign for him to leave the team and try to bring joy to an other team, since Barca is -> BAH ...

Nowadays even those mere defenders can pretty much bullied him from time to time. The reason he was more succesfull back then was because the striker would make a run and attract defenders which gave him room to run into . Or they pinned 2 defenders back which gave him a passing option , just watch rio ferdinands review of the 2011 ucl final , he says it himself . Now suarez just stands on the edge of the box watching messi , or the winger on the opposite side isnt making a run , the only person who has played like the player in their position should play is probably alba or roberto when he plays right back . I don't agreed with you, i do think Messi has improve more his game now days them when he was Young, i think he's a lot more danger today, look at the last season of the man, with a limited team of Barcelona he improve the team so much that if they didn't mess up against Liverpool they would haver been Champions of the Champions league and that would be 90% of Messi's work, i never see he with so much influence of the game like the last year, when he was Young the team of Barcelona was way more danger than nowadays, they got Iniesta, Xavi, Dani, they have a whole team that Works Just fine, that leave a lot more spaces to Messi, now the put 4 to surround him and that's it Barcelona is done if they do that, he got no one to play with, but of course is undeniable that he has lose some pace because of his age the man got 33 is understandable, but i much prefer Messi today them before.

Was born in early 99 and Yeah we likely grew up with the best rivalry and the best players football has seen as of yet but we can't say we experienced the best in every sport. Boxing definitely not. Tennis yeah we did. UFC could be I don't follow it. We missed Michael Jordan in the NBA and not really experienced Schumacher in Formula 1. We did however see Usain Bolt in sprinting and Michael Phelps in swimming.

It seems to me people in the comments are confusing Messi's prime with prime-like statistic for other world class players.
Just because Messi's stats today are comparable to other world class players who are in their prime, doesn't mean that Messi is still in his prime. We must remember that Messi's true prime was stratospheric compared to any other play before or since. 91 Goals in a calendar year.
To say he is still in his prime is not true. Players in their prime are at their physical peak, producing their best career stats, and Messi is past it in both regards. Despite this, there's no doubting he is still world class, and producing stats and performances that are worthy of any other world class players still in their prime, likely hence the aforementioned confusion.

The man is still in his prime if you'd ask me. Unfortunately, Barcelona is no longer in its prime, so it ends up seeming like Messi is not in his prime. But individually, his stats are good almost every season. 20+ goals and 20+ assist is something that not everyone can do. Only Henry managed to get those stats before, I think. And Henry was very young, so doing that at 33 is crazy.

i think the main thing that makes messi so effective is how simple yet effective he is. he doesn't do anything very fancy, yet he is probably the best dribbler of all time bc of how fast he is on and off the ball as well as smart. no one ever thought such a small player would play with this much passion and determination. he will literally get thrown on the floor from a tackle and not dive and simply complain for a card and then get up again and keep fighting. the goat. don't want to start a messi vs cr7 debate, but ronaldo is literally the perfect height and body type of a striker. as much as he works hard, someone like Messi could never get remotely close to how physically strong and fit cr7 is bc that's just the way the body works. i think for me that's what makes him so damn good

The only thing that didn't change or got better is his faculty to pass in variety of ways, and that talent can't be expressed in a team where the only player that makes dangerous runs is mbappe.
