    Whereas I love thrift stores, often major department stores have highly reduced clothing prices at the end of winter or summer. For example, I shopped winter coats mid-February at Penneys and found coats reduced from $180 to $19.00. I stocked up. My jeans too can be under $10 on clearance. The trick is to buy what you need and not buy just because items are deeply marked down.

    Before reading the rest of this, just remember, what's frugal for one person isn't for another. Some things that most people wouldn't consider to be consistent with a frugal lifestyle, are fine, if you can afford it and find frugal ways to have it.
    I normally get a massage every month. Reason being? Without it, I get muscle spasms in my back. They'll keep me up. It's the only thing I've found that helps.
    There are some things I won't buy in a thrift store, like a used mattress, couch, etc. I'll admit to being afraid of bedbugs.
    With that being said, my bedroom furniture belonged to my grandparents. My desk, basket chair (without a cushion, had to buy that), a leather topped side table and my kitchen table and chairs were free, curbside shopping. I have a few other things that were gifts, or belonged to my mother. My piano and bench were $65.00.
    I don't buy clothes from a thrift store. It's rare for me to see something I like and often times, it costs about the same as something new.
    My clothes do, however last me a long time. My shorts had originally been a pair of good jeans. Then they became my everyday jeans, then they became cutoffs. My tee shirt is at least 20 years old.
    I have horses. I rent a field. It's cheaper than paying any type of board at any place else and with the way I have the field set up, I save a ton on hay.
    I used to put whatever I had left at the end of the week in the offering plate, but it was never much. Instead, I started putting that money aside first. God has blessed me for doing that. For instance, I was given a manure spreader that was almost brand new. That type cost about $1000 new.

    • @JuliannaStyles
      @JuliannaStyles  Před měsícem

      Wow good for you!! I absolutely agree about thrift clothing…In my experience I’m finding more that it’s either practically the same pricing as brand new OR there’s something faulty about it you don’t realize till you get it home and can’t return it! (Snags, broken zipper, missing button, stains, fraying, itchy or uncomfortable when worn, etc)

      I'm also anxious about bedbugs but I learnt that putting a garment in a ziploc bag and in the deep freezer for 4 days kills bedbugs, larvae, eggs etc....then wash as normal. Wouldn't work with upholstered furniture of course.

    Most frugal living is just a mindset--being satisfied with what you have, and not believing some THING is going to make you happy. Sewing is a great skill to learn, but it's more important not to be ashamed of repairs, or to learn how to disguise them. Living with appliances that don't match, having furniture that isn't trendy, and not caring that your rooms are "outdated" is a great way to save money, AND not pollute the environment by throwing away things that are still useful.

    I love my Kroger delivery for groceries. It's 59.99 a year and is totally worth it to me. We live in a Rural area and I was surprised they would deliver. It saves us so much time with driving, saves gas $$$ and I get double fuel points and the biggest thing it keeps us out of town and out of the store. No impulse buying, no driving to other stores while we are out in town, no stopping for fast food Win, Win, Win. I have been doing this for 3 months now and I can see a huge difference in the discretionary income I'm able to save. I love buying secondhand, thrift stores are my downfall so I try to stay out of them. I really don't need anything. Love the Depend on the Lord segment.

      I love grocery delivery, too. It sure saved fuel cost and impulse buy while in the store. I, too, can’t leave a thrift shop without finding something I got to have so I stay away from them. The only time I go into a charity shop is when I travel overseas. I can’t bring anything bulky back and there’s not much room in my carryon luggage so I would buy some small like a scarf or a beanie. They are functional and souvenir to remember the town by.

    A great way to save is to start an extended pantry. When I find items that we normally use on sale I buy extra, this way everything eventually is purchased at a lower price and we never have to run to the store for something we have ran out of in the kitchen. A big way to save is to stop buying already prepared foods, especially convenience foods. Even more so for the prepared foods is canned goods. Start canning yourself and save the extra fee of having it pre-canned. Yes you have to buy the jars, but they pay for themselves basically on the first use and it is so much better for the environment. I can meat too soup and it saves a ton and for those that don't know, canned soup is very toxic. I taught my husband and son to cut their own hair and I also do my own. I don't source anyone else to do any of my own grooming, nails, eyebrows etc. Another saver for this expensive time for groceries is to make basic meals. People make these complicated entrees that takes ten to twenty ingredients and it's just not necessary. It is estimated that people throw away almost have of the food they purchase because of waste. I have gotten to the point where I don't make anything new until we eat what we have or I freeze it for a lunch to grab and go for my son and husband. We also never buy snack foods, they're expensive and not healthy. If we want a "snack food" we make it from scratch. Almost everything my son grew up needing was from the thrift store for over 13 years. A trick for this is to buy the items ahead for the years to come. I would find things he would need for clothing over the next couple of years and put them in a tub for years down the road. He was always the best dressed and a lot of the items were 1/20 of the store price. A major part of this is also teaching your kids to understand they shouldn't live by brands and trends. He couldn't even tell someone what three shoe brands or jean brands there are, he could care less. Living a life of contentment and loving the Lord brings joy everyday.

    Another way to conserve and save is to have swap parties. Everyone brings items they can't or don't use, then everyone takes what they can and will use. Whatever is left over gets donated to a charity. People can bring clothing, food, small appliances, games, toys, movies, books, and anything you can think of. Since you belong to a church, there can be large swaps for the congregation throughout the year.
    You can order your groceries to be delivered in paper bags. You can use them for the same things you listed that you use the Walmart bags for, such as cat litter or scooping up dog poop. We all have to stop using plastic bags and plastic bottles. Bio Bags are made from corn starch and biodegrade in a landfill. You can also use their smaller bags for picking up dog poop on a walk. Unless you live in cities like Flint, Michigan, we don't need to buy bottled water. Invest in a water filter that attaches onto a faucet or under your kitchen sink. Cloth napkins can be used for every meal. When they get worn out, they can be used as rags.

    I like your tips. In New Zealand, where I live, I would say the majority of people air dry their clothes. We have dryers but I think as a country we generally don't use them regularly because they can be very expensive to buy and to run here. The weather is generally good enough that air drying is enough. In the winter, if the weather is really bad people sometimes hang their clothes in their garages or under outside shelters (like a veranda). If we don't have a line outside or live in apartments/units, a lot of people buy clothes horses. I think American's call them air dryers. They are a great option if you don't have a line as they are usually compact and can hold a lot of clothes.

    We have a local 99cent type of grocery/general store (minority owned) where I buy cheese, yogurt, and chips. They got goods almost expired (sometimes expired). I never got sick eating what I bought there. I bought vegetables, meat and seafood from a Mexican supermarket. They are great quality and not too expensive. I buy other grocery items from Amazon Fresh using 20% off $50 or $2 off $10 when I make an Amazon return. My mom and I spend about $250 a month on food because we look for bargain and cook at home.

    Love reverse meal planning. Saved so much money using it. I have some flexibility if schedules changed but in general what that day is is what I prepare.
    I was watching a video and the topic was purchased and planning. Over time I knew what my family used, how much and the price I was willing to pay. As seasons approach, I shop the sales for that season and rarely pay full price during the season. Example: sales start in July for school supplies, that’s when I stock up on school and office supplies; in September, cold season medicines go on sale. It reminds me to check consumables and non consumables, consumables are medicine/tissues, etc and non consumable would be cool mist humidifier, reusable ice packs, heating pad, etc. No late night trips to 7-11, late night pharmacy (though my Walmart is open til 11pm). I even have go to 5 min. dinner I make in the microwave ex. 1 can hearty beef and vegetable soup + one package cooked ramen noodle for 2 (generous amount) or 2 adults 2 children with sliced buttered bread.
    One thing I did learn that I think is share worthy, though I could be the last to know, lol, is using generic Claritin for snotty illnesses. Dries everything up and I can get a bottle for $0.04 a dose vs a cold medicine $0.21-$0.55 a dose. Can be use for children also but in the children’s dosage.
    I like to stack savings. I do this in restaurants and stores.
    Meal out -
    1. Join loyalty program/app
    2. Get discounted gift cards online or in stores, frequently get 20% off and pay with rewards credit card.
    3. Use a coupon (online, mailer, newspaper), birthday B1G1
    4. Alway to much food, order to go box with meal and bag. When meal is delivered, immediately put 1/2 in to go box, then in bag and set aside, now I don’t overeat and have a meal for later.
    5. By using coupon, loyalty program knows I’m there.
    6. Some restaurants offer points towards meals.
    7. Kids eat free night
    8. National ? Day! B1G1 burrito at Chipotle on Burritos Day. Free ice cream scoop at Coldstone on National Ice Day! There are National Pretzel, Waffle, Pancake, Pi Day, Doughnut, Pizza, etc.

    A lot of good tips but many are unfortunately too time consuming and because of that not very economical. It’s possible this can work better for someone who is unable to work outside home but if you are able to get a job would be better.
    I still use my dryer and other time saving measures in the home because I then can work witch brings in a lot more than what I would have if I used my time on mending clothes and the like.
    But once I did all of these things as a stay at home mom until I realized that I was using my time unwisely… essentially not valuing my time properly

    • @JuliannaStyles
      @JuliannaStyles  Před 14 dny

      Not wasting tons of time and money watching TV, being on social media apps on your phone, and having excessive beauty appointments are ALL both economical AND time saving…which was the majority of what I mentioned in the video and easily can be applied for a stay at home mom or if you’re working 🤷‍♀️

    • @Lilly-xg5xw
      @Lilly-xg5xw Před 13 dny

      @@JuliannaStyles the stuff you mention in your comment is leisure. I am talking about what is economical to do if I person is interested in saving money. If you look at money as time. What would your time be worth per hour, per week, per year. Generally doing frugal things of the types you describe would leave you with very little when you factor in the time you spend on it. The time investment when put into a job would yield much more.
      I say this because I was doing similar things as you are just spinning in place until I abandoned that plan and started swapping my time with work that pays more and has benefits like retirement saving etc. I was eventually able to start investing and today I don’t need to work if I don’t want to.
      Being frugal is great but they are ways of doing it where economic benefit to effort ratio is higher. In my experience is being frugal, bargaining doing research around large purchases and just refraining from buying unnecessary stuff. Things that do not cost me time or where the time investment is worth it.
      Mending clothes and doing extensive planning and couponing around groceries, making all the meals from scratch etc. is not it, because the time effort is substantial.
      It is also important to have leisure time and activities. If some women like to do beauty treatments, watch TV or whatever else to take care of themselves and enjoy life… they should do that. Not all people who enjoy life in this way are automatically financially irresponsible.
      When I take care of myself I am able to be more productive… get more resources for me and my family. I am also a better mom and a better friend as well as coworker.
