  • Alena Wicker just finished high school and is planning on attending ASU as she inches toward her goal of being a NASA engineer.
At just 4-years-old, Alena told her mother she would work for NASA and at 12 she is taking the leap into college.
Alena's goal is to work with NASA by 16 and help create rovers like the one sent to Mars by the Perseverance Mission spearheaded at ASU.

Wow this is amazing. Congratulations young lady. So glad to hear that she will be successful. Being African American is wonderful. You usually hear an Asian or Indian child goes to college at a young age. I'm sure her family is proud of her as I of her and I don't know her. Good luck in the future and with NASA!

Child prodigies make for wonderful stories. They set apart from their same age students with great achievements in educations. Alas most of them come down to earth once they reach adulthood and their degree of success levels off with same age students in their chosen field. In other words they start off with a bang but fizzle back to normality once they get older. If all the celebrated prodigies maintained and continued their acknowledged abilities we would see them produce unlimited eureka moments. In fact most successful scientists started off normal or slow in their youth and exploded onto the scene as adults. Sort of a reverse journey.

There is a concern about institutions that promote child prodigies choosing their campus. We have so and so studying here etc. They are children first. Putting them on stage as being almost super human can be unfair to the child. There is a difference between being able to do advanced calculus at aged 10 and being able to formulate new creative hypothesis at the same age. The 10 year old who can perform a Mozart piece with an orchestra will perform in the same manner at age 23 but were they able to write their own concerto with the same brilliance at any age in their development. I am talking about abstract thinking as compared to route thinking. Those that will advance a better world for mankind rely upon experience through exposure and maturity.

Goals are tangible and can be grasped and attained. Dreams? Roll over, yawn, and say "that was cool. Wonder what caused it to stop?". Make it yours, young lady. This concrete cowboy wishes you the best. You also don't need luck when your abilities and drive to accomplish are allowed to lead you.
