  • Adding additional security of GPS tracking to our bikes and scooters seems like a great idea! Let's talk with Andrew Ford who has been testing out various GPS trackers for his e-bikes and scooters.

    Bike companies should build bikes that are tracking devices in themselves. That way no matter where your bike is, you can find it.

      For airtag after some mod you may hide into your bike frame , seat , as for battey life it never a issue after some mod it can run dual cell battery or more even 18650 battery this will work for other gps tracker as well
      Also for airtag you can easily remove speaker to make a silent ver. 🥰

    This is great info. Thanks. It got me thinking about security. It would also be nice to have some info about bicycle insurance because if GPS trackers become popular, it's only a matter of time before thieves know where to find them. Of course recovering the bike or not having it stolen in the first place, is preferable to filing a claim especially in the world of supply chain issues we live in.

    Some great information on the problems using rfid technology vs using a gps system, way more issues than you could talk about in 15 minutes. Other thoughts a bike is the only form of transportation we use that doesn't have a vin and there is no industry standard for serial numbers, a large number of bikes don't even have one which helps fuel the stolen bike market (proof of ownership). For every 10 people that get their bike stolen 1 of them never rides again. So you are completely correct in saying that we want safer infrastructure for us to ride on but we also need safer places to park, building one without the other is not effective.

    Just ordered a GSD. This was the only thing that made me hesitant. I am looking into insurance. I wonder if a sentry cam style thing might be a good deterrent. I’ve caught someone stealing my bike before. It was broad daylight on a busy street. I thought they were trying to get their bike disentangled from mine so rushed to offer to unlock and move my bike. As I arrived I saw the cutter as it broke my lock. My reaction was to say “what are you doing?” Their casual reply… “oh is this your bike, you were lucky” then they ran off. I was so shocked by their “brass neck” and the fact it was a female. They weren’t a stereotypical bike thief. Ironically I was in a bike shop buying a better lock. They had none in or I’d have lost my bike taking time to purchase. Anyway. The moral of the story. Get a good lock and insurance. Police would not be interested in recovery from my experience.

    I would argue we are well past early adoption, but some areas are more progressive then others. Ebikes in the US are in their mass-market transition. Early adoption was a decade ago with Bionx , etc. These days eBike companies are being backed by big VC firms.
    With the context of “mass-maker” what matters to Americans. Typically it’s price point. The issue with integrated GPS tracking is it drives up costs of the bike. Stromer integrated GPS tracking into ST2 bikes around 2016 and the tech and software development really pushed up the bike price compares to the ST1.
    Integrated GPS would need to last, and most consumer electronics have a really short life. Bikes take a beating due to Temp, vibration, shock loads, and water exposure. All of those issues are a nightmare for electronic. Electrics designed to be rugged and have longer life cost a lot more then consumer devices. Tile and Apple trackers are 1 year, cyber trash devices with limited warranty. So, naturally ebike companies are focusing on bikes and not GPS tracking.
    Another issue is that even if your bike gets stolen and you know the location, what can you do? Most police won’t do anything because they have to observe the crime and each state has different rules. In general, it feels like we are going to have a lot more vigilantism.
    I think Tern is smart by including bike and wheel locks to make it as cumbersome as possible to steal a bike. That being said, you can find plenty of CZcams videos of people stealing full size motorcycles by picking them up and shoving them into a van. You just need a crew of 3-5 folks.
    In the end, car theft happens all the time. Bike theft has alway been and issue. Back in the day horse theft was an issue. As a society we have to sort out how we handle with theft. In the UK there appears to be more brawling. The lack of guns results in conflicts being solved in a more old fashion butt kicking.

    INHO a tracker isn't worth it. Better to put those monthly payments (for the tracking cell service) into insurance premiums. Then have a decent lockup to prevent casual theft, expect it to be stolen sooner or later and just get reimbursed and replace when it inevitably is. You should never confront a bike thief or expect the cops to go chase after it for you. Your life or health is not worth your property.
    PS: One idea I am pursuing (and I have no idea of the value of it) is a combination weather cover (i.e. ASIN B01M6BNZQT) and motion alarm. Thieves will not know exactly what is under the cover and be able to assess your lockup from a distance before going in for the kill as quickly as possible and prepared. The curious will have to remove the cover and activate the alarm to know what's underneath. If you can carry the weight having multiple types of locks will then further slow them down.
    PPS: I am 100% agreed that infrastructure and theft are the two principle obstacles to getting more people to adopt "serious" (i.e. not recreational/sporting) cycling and away from car dependency. Here is a link to a video on a program that is proven to reduce theft: czcams.com/video/48V9Xtpgq9I/video.html

    Bike companies don't invest too much into GPS trackers because they LIKE your bike to be stolen, means you have to buy another one.

    • @BikeShopGirl
      @BikeShopGirl  Před rokem

      Not at all. It’s something most brands are working on. The tech is just slow to roll out due to international cell availability

    • @PINACI
      @PINACI Před rokem

      @@BikeShopGirl I don't dispute that it's rollout is slow, I'm just indicating a reason why. I had an old tumble dryer that was very easy to open and repair until it was just too old to carry on. Its replacement 15yrs on is designed to be very difficult to get into. I also had an old fridge freezer that was easy to repair but again its replacement many years later is designed to be impossible to repair without trying to remove the very glued on backing that covers all of the pipes and electronics.
      Goods are now designed like this for a reason, Apple goods being the worst offenders so trust me when I say there is a reason why it's always been difficult to GPS track a bike. Money makes the world go around and corporations and businesses prefer that you replace instead of repair.

    • @BikeShopGirl

      Theft is a major barrier for folks wanting to get into biking. Speaking for Tern, we hope you have our bikes for 5-10+ years and view them a car replacements. We want more people on bikes, not selling replacement bikes.
      There are many brands that want folks to upgrade every year. That is not us.

    • @PINACI
      @PINACI Před rokem

      @@BikeShopGirl I hope you don't take what I'm saying the wrong way, I'm not trying to say that's what you would do if you own a bike shop. Most bike shops are just resellers who buy from manufacturers. Anyway IMO it's better to be able to prevent the theft rather than try to find it after its been stolen, especially now with the e-bike boom. My e-bike cost me nearly £2k so I use two motion alarmed disc lock, one on each wheel and a quality u-lock with extra cable around my front wheel. But even this is not enough these days with the use of cordless angle grinders which is why I have just pre-ordered the new Litelok X3 to replace my existing u-lock.

    All the tracking in the world won't help you if the police won't actually follow up with the theft. In my area bike theft (like car break-ins or shoplifting) is considered a non-crime, it's never followed up on.
    If/when my Tern GSD gets stolen I"ll replace it with a Brompton that folds up and can go in the store with me.

      Before we did the bait bike video, we kinda thought that’s how it would play out here too. Maybe get a police report. But after the police came out they immediately went to look for it. Of course everyone’s Police Department mileage may vary, but I don’t think police are getting many reported bike thefts where they also have an exact location for it. It’s one thing to tell the police your bike was stolen, it’s another thing to tell them it’s stolen, and you know where it is. My .02 c
