  • As we shift into a more athletic focus with the summer in bound we have started integrating explosive movements into our programming speeding up some of the strength that we have focused on building shifting slightly more to power movements. The box jump is a concentric focused movements with not much emphasis on eccentric overload displaying pure power and we love doing it off of a seated bench to give us a place to rock and explode off of. We have been working with DJ on getting more out of his upper body with this set up but his history of skateboarding and getting vertical without his arms is engrained in him from his childhood. This also opens the conversation about tactical populations having to be athletic mostly without the use of our arms. We have a video coming on this soon that you all will have to check out! Impressive as hell for someone your size in my opinion. My son is 5’11” 170lbs and has been working with a trainer for 4 years (throughout high school and now college) doing box drills (upwards of 54 inches) and other explosive style exercises. People use to laugh when my son would tell them the types of exercises he was doing in his workouts. No hiding it now - Its helped my son tremendously with baseball as he plays for a nationally ranked top 10 college. For his size, his explosiveness has helped him hit balls nearly 440 feet when others bigger and stronger can’t come close to those distances. Watching pregame batting practice is a treat to see my son out hit kids 5 inches taller and 30-40 pounds heavier. It’s not about size or even overall strength, its about the explosive force you can quickly generate with your legs and core. As a retired LE detective I greatly appreciate your service and videos - Thank You.

Seeing as DJ is an CATD/aff-i skydiver this kind of load tolerance on his knees, and ankles ,must give him a lot of confidence when he comes in fast for a landing.
Great programming Vernon. Always love to see an upload.
Liking the gym setup you guys have there. Looks like you got a few new pieces > ( belt squat, tbar row ,seated chest press and a pulldown.low row).

Ordered a tank top and it’s so simple but it fits perfectly. It’s the most minuscule thing but it’s the best tank top I’ve ever worn in my life, lol.

DJ is a beast......and he makes me sick at the same time! Lol
I'd be lucky to do a running 4 inch jump these days. My lower back got bad a decade ago and I just sat down and let it get worse from fear of throwing it out. Everytime it goes out I'm bed ridden for up to a week.
These kind of videos really make me miss my youth! Nice workout

Fast twitch is one of the first things you'll lose as you get older. the last time i could slam dunk a volleyball was at age 36.. Now that I'm in my 40's, my bench press and deadlifts are pretty much the same, but my ability to explode and sprint has diminished significantly. Boxers always say, "power is the last thing to go." and yeah, i know, explosive ability is a component of strength, but those fast-twitch muscle fibers tend to be the first to retire. it's all good, though.. you can continue being fairly quick through your 40s, and maintain a decent amount of muscle mass into your 50s as long as you exercise, eat right, and take care of your body (don't smoke and drink like an a55hole)

Guys, at aprox min 5:00 into the video, DJ made a very interesting question. May I ask what's DJ's height and weight? I can try and make an analysis of how much power he's producing at the different heights he's jumping in order to set a realistic goal.
