You don't need to save toad, you can just bring in "Weegee," keep him in a bubble, and make sure you grab the "famous flagpole" when the last two digits of the time are the same, so fireworks trigger, the SMB1 flagpole music plays, and you get a toad house. EDIT: Wow that is what you did.
