That sword Layne is holding is practically a claymore! And it’s real! They put so much into their videos, it’s incredible.
Layne's sword paired with Cesar's chain mail... have to agree, the amount of effort they put in is absolutely stunning.
What tickles me about Geoff's appearance in these videos is this: After 16 Tons he complained about his "spaghetti" arms, yet lo and behold, there they are exposed every time. LOL. It just makes me laugh. But this is yet another epic production and it gives me chills. They all looked great but Cesar's pixie ears? gotta love how cute he looks with pixie ears. However Cesar rocked that chain mail, and the pixie ears. the chain mail shirt weighs 20 lbs. He had to lie on the floor between takes to take the weight off his shoulders. And if that wasn't enough in the behind the scenes video we saw him doing the Single Ladies dance, and a bit of ballet, and Geoff joined in!. It's their fun that really sets them apart, as well as the talent. They're just so multi talented and go above and beyond. And that's why we love them.
Apparently that chain mail was REAL, not a lightweight mock-up. It weighed quite a bit so I'm surprised he was still able to sing. Also, in true skyrim style, he's wearing chain armor and plate gauntlets, just like most players would mix armors in the game because of their bonus stats.
@@Tryst46 In the behind the scenes video Cesar explins that he had to lie on the floor between takes to take some of the weight off his shoulders which got sore.
@@christinestromberg4057 I can imagine. To think that knights back in the day wore this stuff for many hours every day.
@@Tryst46 Back in the days of knights in armour they would start training at a fairly young age so no doubt became strong by the time they wore full chain mail. Singers don't normally have that kind of training :)
VoicePlay + Medieval = EPIC! The attention to detail is amazing. Cesar is actually wearing 20 pounds of real chain mail.

Great reaction! My reaction to the video? At the end I was “Wait…what? Where’s the rest of the movie?” This just begs for a sequel!
Haha right? I love the way they ended this music video. It really did make me feel like I was watching the end of the action/adventure movie.
@@JeffreyHackReacts In their behind the scenes when they finished filming there’s a really cute spot where Geoff goes marching off and saying “we’re just 5 good friends going on an adventure.” And Cesar just follows along with him.
The set is from Pattycake Productions' Villain's Lair- you've seen it in Monster Mash, as well as Geoff's cover of Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold. It seems to be a recurring set, but depending on the angles, lighting and accessories it can have a very different feel. VoicePlay really have an advantage over other groups when it comes to videos for having access to Pattycake (which is owned and run by Layne- the beatboxer, and Tony Wakim, former VoicePlay baritone prior to J. None). They don't always shoot there, but there have been quite a few that utilize that resource. It's always credited in the video notes as to where it was shot, as well as other details regarding makeup, costuming (if applicable; they do a lot of that themselves also) and camera work, direction (which is pretty much always Layne or Geoff, depending on who did the arrangement, but sometimes includes Tony) etc. Eli pretty much always does the lighting work (and he's fantastic at it!). Then whoever did the arrangement does the video editing as well. And all this is why VoicePlay blows my mind far more than any of the other a cappella groups. Because can you name another group who is as hands-on with every aspect of their projects? The amount of talent- in far more than just incredibly skillful singing!- is just astounding. And THAT is why VoicePlay will forever stand above the 'bigger' a cappella acts in my estimation. They are the full creative package, and I respect the hell out of them.

Happy to read your TED talk 😂 And I agree! VoicePlay brings something special to every one of their music videos and it is remarkable how they do everything themselves. Just shows why they can use all the financial support they can get!

I think Kathy Castellucci works there too for some of the videos. I know she was handling the props for Geoff's Way Down; she's the one who threw him the mop.

Thank you. I love your reactions. You’re the only one I’ve seen to really appreciate and comment on the great production values of their videos.
They have a live feed for some of their patrons at most video shoots. We get to see some of the prep for the shoots. For this one, Geoff and Layne already had their makeup done, but for the next hour the two makeup artists worked on Cesar and Omar (those ears took awhile) and then started on Eli. So just the makeup took well over an hour with two makeup artists. Meanwhile, Eli and Layne put the finishing touches on the lighting and Geoff sorted out the costuming.
Eli once again did the lighting design for this video. He just keeps getting better and better. It’s fascinating how he programs the lighting cues into the playback so that each shot has exactly the same lighting effects.
I just realized that not only does VoicePlay do most everything themselves, but they are also educating their patrons so that we can truly appreciate what goes into these videos!

They're like their own film production company honestly, which is very rare to find in the a cappella community. As a filmmaker myself, I like pin pointing out the production elements that go into their videos because they're all done very professionally.

I describe Voiceplay as "musical acappella theater/film" while the other groups HomeFree for example is 'musical acapella not theater' and Pentatonix is like "music video pop group acapella'.. Distinctly different but all very very good. HomeFree and Vocieplay are like 1 and 2, 2 and 1 .. I see them as horses racing neck and neck.. and they really aren't better or worse, just different but all extremely talented. And Avi is in his own class, LOL. He might actually BE a bard...you should try Change on the Rise, :)
Loved your reaction! I was hoping you would react to this one. Yes the video was shot at Layne’s production studio where many of their videos are shot. He co-owns it with another former member of the band. Geoff was the arranger for this one as well as the one who directed this video. He also was the one who got the costumes for this one. Fun fact: Cesar was wearing about 20 pounds of chain mail and real gauntlets. Yes the camera man was wearing a stabilizer during filming. My favorite costume was between Geoff’s and Layne’s. They all looked great though. VoicePlay Rules!

Eli is responsible for the visuals... he did the lighting and special effects, and took lead on set design. He also did the lights for Hoist the Colors. (He's been taking an increasingly strong role in visuals, this - I think - marks Eli's most engaged, and most impressive .) (Voice Play RULES)
Yeah! Eli has a very clever eye for lighting and scenic design altogether.
Eli arranged Eleanor Rigby and completely bowled me over. Amazing!! Loved it so much!
Voiceplay rules! I always appreciate your reactions and analysis. Layne Stein (the vocal percussionist) and Tony Wakim (former baritone with Voiceplay) own Pattycake Productions, the set is one of theirs. You can see Tony in their Phantom of the Opera cover.
Speaking of costumes, Cesar's chain mail weighed at least 20 pounds.
I am not a gamer, so had no expectations when I first saw this, but knew it would be wonderful. Voiceplay is my favorite acapella group. I wish they would go back to touring, so I could see them in person, but I don't think they plan to do that. Each of them has a recording studio at home, so they record separately then get together to do the video.
You haven't reacted to Geoff's newest piece, Shenandoah, it has a much more soothing vibe to it.

Oh believe me, I'm trying to catch up with Geoff's solo work. As one person running this music channel, it can be hard to balance the reaction and covers I create 😂 I LOVED their Phantom of the Opera cover! Why do you think they won’t go back to touring?
@@veronicathunander4579 They haven't been talking about it, and other artists are touring. Just a thought, I have no personal knowledge.

I hope they’ll resume touring and record one of their shows so that we who don’t live in the states will be able to enjoy it too 😁 I’d take any opportunity to see them live, I’d even go to a neighbouring country for it! 😊
@@ilonadever8249 I think it may be a combination of caution due to COVID, as well as the fact that they’re still short one permanent member. I don’t think they’ve given up on touring I just think that they are going to take advantage of this “short” hiatus and really explore what they can do as far as production goes and collaborating with a lot of artists.
Selfishly, because I would never be able to go to one of their live performances due to immunosuppression, I’m thrilled that they’re doing all of the studio work. Another thing about them doing the studio work versus touring if they really get to explore a lot of things that they normally wouldn’t be able to and take those risks that other groups with record labels cannot take.
Voiceplay Rules! And my favorite costume is Omar's. I guess I'll always have a thing for elves and archers. I am an archer myself.

I think my favorite parts of that arrangement were Eli's high notes and the epic ending.

I have a hard time choosing between the costumes. I think Cesar would have to take it just due to the fact he wore that chain mail and the weight of it caused him some pain he had to deal with, though I really like Layne's as well. They really went all out on the costumes and effects and Eli's lighting was perfection. The behind the scenes for this one was priceless. Thank you for this reaction, look forward to seeing more!

Skyrum? Not sure if that was a deliberate typo, but the video game is Skyrim from Bethesda Game Studios. :)
Anyway, I really loved Voiceplay's take/mix/mashup of the theme song and the in game song 'Dragon Born Comes'. When they start singing in the Dragon Tongue, it's a made up language of the dragon they made for the game called Dovahzul.
Also, your reaction when they do something extra cool says it all and happens a lot, cuz they are always doing something cool lol :)

Amazing reaction and insight! I may be wrong but I think they have actually used a crane once, but not for this one. I think that was one of their videos that didn't go well and they had to reshoot because of some technical issues with that camera.
I love all their costumes, but I really like Layne being a Nord jarl and Eli looking like a necromancer! But yes, Geoff does rock every costume he gets in 😂
it wasn't a crane, it was a drone. they did end up using the original drone footage, after some work they were able to salvage the drone footage.
I mean, they all looked incredibly great in their costumes! But yes, Geoff take the gold for me.
I'm sure they have use a crane for their music videos before. I definitely wouldn't doubt it considering their production quality.

I think the new format is really smart. Sometimes you just don't need a minute by minute analysis of a piece of art, it has features that are consistent through the whole piece, and your new format gives you the freedom to target your reaction. This reaction was very good. A few things... the makeup is the facial tattoos that you can select your character's appearance in Skyrim, so it ties in really well with the gamer community, who would instantly recognize those facial tattoos. My personal costume/makeup choice is Ceasar, who was carrying like twenty pounds of actual freaking chain mail! Omar's ears are hollywood level makeup... great! I really appreciated your reaction, it made me see things I hadn't seen in any other reaction. I'm looking forward to what you do next!
My favorite is Cesar in his 20lb chainmail.
Then Layne as a Viking Warrior. And helping Cesar.
Then Eli as a Necromancer.
Followed by Omar as a cute Wood Elf.
Then Geoff pulling up the read where the Red Guard should be. So he can protect everyone else.
Ive I've never played Skyrim but love this song and performance. Voiceplay always outdoes themselves.
I've also always been into the medieval era.

The language in the middle is called Dovahzul or dragonspeak and is a created language for the game. It is also used in the main menu background music of the game

I like all their costumes a lot but if I have to choose I think Omar’s costuming, with his beautiful makeup and his arrows, takes the win for me, closely followed by Eli’s hooded mage look, closely followed by the rest of them 😁. VoicePlay rules!! 😊
This one has so much going on that I was hoping that this would be one of your extended videographer related videos. You did point out a number of things but I was really looking forward to all those little details.
One thing you didn’t mention was the special effects Eli added when Layne starts the percussion and also when the tenors do their war shout of FUS RO DAH. When that is shouted in the game it creates a shockwave that sends your opponents flying off, and there is a special effect of force coming out of their mouths when they shot that.
Also I do watch a lot of the behind the scenes and they use a camera on a gimbal. I believe it’s called I’m a steady cam and they use those really extensively.
And yes, that scene was used in Misty Mountains as well as Monster Mash by Geoff . It is a mainstay of PattyCake Productions for their series ofVillains Lair.
I strongly recommend that you watch those with your videography background. It is a series that is coproduced by Layne,the beat boxer, and Tony who used to be their baritone. Essentially it is all of the Disney villains trying to get back into power and it is set in a crumbling Castle.
They write the script, write the music, hire and cast the actors, do the make up, and see the costumes all on their own.
They recently came out with a standalone episode that is sort of a takeoff of Night at the Museum. The new security guard is doing his rounds in the museum and is in the room dedicated to the villains. And the paintings come to life. It’s extremely well done but my favorites are still season one, episode one as well as their Halloween special Bump in the Night.
Yeah, there were a lot more video production elements that could have been covered in the commentary but I've decided I don't want my videos to go over 15 minutes anymore. I appreciate you pointing out all of the cool VFX they incorporated into the music video!
If you're not a fan of Skyrim or have ever seen it played, Fus Ro Dah is the shout used to knock back enemies in the game. It's not part of the song but they added it for extra effect, along with the blast effect from their mouths as they shouted it. You might also have missed that they sang the song in Dovahzul, the language of the dragons which was a made up language for the game. Learning another language for a song is hard, but learning a completely made-up language shows dedication.
Eli is responsible for the lighting in Voiceplay's sets and he does a fantastic job every time.
VoicePlay is a very dedicated group. Yeah, Eli amazes me with his lighting designs!
This from a game and the costume are different races you can be in the game and they also sang in the language that was in the game at the end were a thing came out their mouths in the game it called a shout you use to beat the dragons in the game.

I really enjoy your analysis of the cinematography. To me that differentiates VP from the other a capella groups -- their "videos" all look like 5 singers just standing in front of some background or other. I like the great audio, but I prfer getting a movie with. my music.
