Yes because Iloilo city is a Capital of the Philippines during Spanish Era

@@arnelmonares9242the emphasis is on the word SECOND. Of course it wasn’t the most important. But the entire Panay island had political and religious importance during the SPANISH ERA. The strategic and tactical importance of a place varies during time. Voice of Freemen in the Philippines was correct in claiming so. After all, the spanish influence was extremely great in the entire Panay island after cebu. The sto nino festivals which starts in Cebu’s Sinulog, followed by Aklan’s Ati-atihan, and finally by Iloilo’s Dinagyang are representation of the early “visitations” of the sto nino image upon the arrival of the Spanish colonists. At the time, Iloilo was more economically important than cebu as the Port of Iloilo was far more accessible from Manila (which is accessible through the west philippine sea) than the Port of Cebu (domestic sea voyage was far more difficult at the time because of shallow waters. Thus, for long voyages, the open is near the Philippine coastline was preferrable). Furthermore, the liberation of Panay which began with the efforts of prominent Illonggos in Iloilo City was a critical victory against spanish colonizers. Knowing how Ilonggos can influence the Spanish regime, it was considered politically important. These are some of the reasons why Iloilo was the SECOND most important city next to manila DURING THE SPANISH ERA.

Proud Ilonggo here as well.. My mom's family also used to own one of the old Spanish mansions in Jaro. They owned the old Spanish house adjacent to Colegio de San Jose, near the Sanson-Montinola Mansion.. Atty. Valentina Esposo onced owned the house back in the 1960's..

It’s surprising that most of the elites of Iloilo in the past are native born Filipinos, not Chinese merchants who migrated and assimilated. That’s the difference. Iloilo’s local population controls the economy. Other places may have a bigger economy but their local economies were ran by the Chinese migrants.

and some of them may have been descendants of pre-hispanic Panay kingdoms. In Spanish Era, native nobility assimilated and were granted noble status after they converted to Catholicism, retaining their lands that became plantations or haciendas.

If I may ask you how is the economy that was being run by iloilo elites booming ba? That question may be answered by present economic status of iloilo city that was being tagged by its inhabitants as an economic powerhouse in the visayas during Spanish era.Sa katagal tagal na ng panahon hundred of years ago na,katiting lang ang improvements ng iloilo city.

The Lizares Mansion has 70+ doors inside, huge receiving areas (sala & dining areas) with spiral wooden staircase up to the attic. In 1940s the mansion was used as a Japanese Barracks, were alot of tortured bodies buried down at the basement and also, there's a gazebo (school's playground) that has a underground tunnels going to Jaro River & Iloilo Memorial Park but no longer passable due to excessive floods.
