    My father LOVED watching Bill paint. Dad was a WWII vet and served in Europe. He was at Normandy +21 days and won a bronze star during the Bulge with the Third Armored Division. Dad had no use for Nazis but loved the German people in general. I'm surprised dad didn't marry a German girl. But anyway I think Bill's nationality had at least something to do my father's appreciation of this program.

    • @AAlexanderArt
      @AAlexanderArt  Před 8 lety +17

      +ohger1 I became a student of WWII after, of all things, playing a video game (Call of Duty - World at War). During the credits there was a statement that 60,000,000 people died during WWII. I just couldn't wrap my head around that idea and so began reading everything I could get my hands on. What the Nazis, and their allies, perpetrated on the world was disastrous as much, if not more, to their own people as the rest of the world. When you read the story of Sophie Scholl and realize that there were Germans who tried to resist, at great personal peril, you realize the world is not black and white as some would have us believe -- there are myriad shades of gray. That a German, whose life was uprooted and changed as much as Bill's was, could start over and not only rebuild his life, but gain celebrity and, thereby, help change the lives of millions of people, is inspiring beyond words. Bill was not only a role model for his own countrymen but for all of us. I respect, particularly, folks like your father, who was cast into the cauldron of war yet was able to see the world clearly. God bless him...and Bill!

    I come here right after watching Bob Ross paint practically the same thing. Man, they even say the same things. They really were just the same artist split into two different personalities.

      I like them both too, but William Alexander was the 1st painter on PBS I remember watching with my late father during the mid to late eighties (reruns), so my nostalgia is strongest with him, and you have to give William his due, he was first, he trained Bob Ross.

      King Carriere Victor Castro Bob was not an amateur. He always mentioned that he did traditional painting for years before discovering the wet on wet method. Which he did from stumbling upon Bill's show while in the Air Force, in addition to the time Bill trained him. By the way, the concept of a certification program for instructors in this method started with Bill as well. Nevertheless he had painting from a young age, but the Alexander style painting came later in life. Bob was about 40 when The Joy of Painting started.
      Their comment may seem insensitive to Bob, but I can understand Alexander Art's frustration with so many things that Bill innovated being more heavily associated with Bob. Granted Bill certainly didn't invent wet on wet painting, which goes back 500 years or so. However he certainly modernized it and made it accessible to the masses. It's like being a Rolling Stones fan while writing off the blues musicians that inspired them. Likewise if you love Bob Ross then you should appreciate the man who made his career possible.

      William Hayes . I thought at first that maybe I had misheard him but No , that’s just Bill , he is brilliant . I doubt there is any other painting tutor on the planet who would use a phrase like that while expressing their painting .
      Just marvellous .
