My hunch is it’s actually not going to be the new model three that is going to receive these new cameras. since they don’t want to leak the new Robo taxi, Tesla is literally using the model three as a test bench for the self driving hardware

Tesla doesn’t really do Model Year updates, so they’ll just add it as they go I’m not surprised

HW4 isn’t even being used yet it’s running HW3 in emulation mode per Elon on X so not sure they need a HW5 yet

@@heyJohnEe I see why you say it shouldn't exist, but the fact that it does exist suggests that Tesla plans to unlock some benefit from it; otherwise they wasted a lot of money to develop a useless processor, and Tesla seems too smart to push useless tools all the way to market. Which do you suppose it is, then, Tesla's mistake or some plan that will eventually be of some value to the customer?
@MaynardGK it wasn’t a completely useless computer, they needed to do it because HW3 had reached its limits technically speaking. It just required more compute so the current HW4 solves that

I think this set up is for robotaxi, if you look at the prototype/concept of robotaxi then the b camera location would make sense because the door is going to be bigger. Also since the robotaxi is a hatchback, it would also make sense to place the rear cam higher
Good point, but it would also not make financial sense to run 2 separate stacks of FSD hardware, robotaxi vs everything else. It would complicate overall development and logistics to maintain
Cool to see but sucks for my 2023 Y with the old technology and the Model 3 Highland Performance I just ordered that will still have the old hardware. I’ve been waiting for the new M3P for a year now that I don’t think I can wait any longer ! With the M3P prices constantly rising, it might go over the $55k tax credit threshold if I end up waiting 😫

@@heyJohnEe going to stick to my order. My delivery date is May23rd - June 6th for the Ultra Red/blk. I’m too damn excited and dont think I can wait any longer. Hopefully they will come out with some kind of front camera retrofit in the future. All I want is birdseye view. I already ordered the aftermarket stalks for it too ! 😁

Brother, exciting and interesting update!! Oh man, you just made it harder for me to pull the trigger on a new M3P... By the looks of it, HW5 is significantly different from HW4 and a much bigger step like e.g. HW3 to HW4. Just the front bumper camera by itself would be a BIG benefit. Tesla should finally abandon the idea that FSD can be done on vision alone, which is just not reliable in the real world (darkness, rain, snow, condensation on the cameras, and so on). By the way, you already placed to order for your M3P? How does this news affect your decision, would you wait? But then again there's no real telling when it would actually arrive, could be early 2025 even.. cheers buddy and thanks again for your postings.

I think new Model 3 and probably recent Model S and X vehicles with HW4 possibly are able to be retrofitted with HW5
This is going to be at least another year out. Whenever leaks of new updates come out, it’s always taken about a year to see them in production, then people still have to wait to take delivery. Just do a 36 month lease now. Waiting another year to be able to have self driving is not worth it when you can enjoy the rest of the car now and upgrade again in the near future.
HW5 was planned and worked on since early 2019, it was suppose to be called HW4 but then… you should go watch my last video I explained why the current HW suite should’ve never existed
My expedition has front windshield camera, bumper camera, ultrasonic sensors, and radar. I can accurately place it anywhere. I drove a new Y and it only has ONE of these 4 front aids and is absolutely not sufficient. Don’t believe me, but even Tesla agrees as it has to back in to accurately place the car in parking since the rear camera has a better view of right obstacles.
Tesla is ridiculous man. Why isn't this available with the new model? They release a new model 3 only to upgrade the hardware so soon after.
They did this for many refreshes and redesigns, it’s just how they roll. There are downsides of not following model year

@MarkTomeh you technically never NEED a Tesla now lol, but it’s more on you, if you’re going to feel regretful if they release HW5 shortly after taking delivery. If you could care less, then yeah jump for it now. Otherwise there’s always used Corollas on marketplace 😁

I lost my car to an accident a few months ago so it's been rough getting around, been using my motorcycle to commute to work, been waiting for new Highland Tesla, and then Performance, and now HW5. I just don't know man if I should just find a cheap used car or buy a Tesla. I know I want a Tesla just not sure when the right time is ever.

That A-pillar camera placement on the middle of the rear seat window, makes absolutely no sense. Very confusing.
Hence not retrofitable to current cars, likely a new design somehow
@@heyJohnEe yeah, I am just not sure that means HW5 for current line-up though as you are suggesting, but rather tesla crew training and thus preparing FSD for an unannounced car model, such as the Model 2 for instance, so once the car goes on sale, customers don't have to wait for FSD functionality until later, which is currently the case with the CT.
@knekker1 that could possibly be, or they’re just doing approximate placements now on the model 3 and could shift it to other areas for better integration later on

Your evaluation is that the additional cameras and sensors are a vital upgrade for improved autonomy, and only HW5 will have enough processing power to crunch all that data; is that a fair assessment? Assuming HW5 is actually ready to appear -- that would be great, but I'll believe it when we see it -- there remains the question of native software support. We've noted that the full potential of HW4 is not yet unlocked, because HW4 is currently run in HW3 emulation mode, so current autonomy is limited to the power of HW3. Is Tesla really close to both releasing HW5 and running it in its native mode so as to really make use of it? That seems a stretch, although it's probably true that Tesla would prefer to de-emphasize such a huge leap forward out of concern for triggering that Osborne effect. Personally, I'm intrigued by Tesla, but I'm not yet a buyer for exactly that reason! As a side issue, I'm curious: We know HW3 is not field-upgradeable to HW4 due to fundamental incompatibility; I wonder if there will be any possible upgrade path from HW4 to HW5, or whether that question will be relevant?

HW5 is going to be mind blowing with AI. I feel like canceling my order, but concerned about tax credit being gone. This is just how Tesla operates.

Elon Musk guaranteed that any HW3 car will allow level 5 autonomy. Expect huge lawsuits if those extra sensors are necessary.
They’ve changed the wording, removing every reference to Level 5. Now it just states full self driving “capabilities” meaning it doesn’t even need to be true self driving. It removes all liability ultimately

Tesla should build complete and working cars and stop delivering unfinished test cars to their customers.
I‘m an Tesla M3P driver and I am extreme upset because of this outrageous business practice and Customer handling!
I think they’re quality has greatly improved over time, but these upgrades are just how it works in tech, it moves so quickly
