I LOVE ELO, since 1974. Yes I’m old. But a great band is a great band. You need to explore the albums as a full reaction. They all stand on there own and are thematic.
You and me both. Jeff and the lads were my favorite band in high school. Wore out a coulpe of copies of New World Record. Still haven't forgiven my mom for referring to them as the Electric Light Company. 😁
@@mongolike-candy5086 🤣🤣 Similar to this: I'm 14 opening X-Mas presents and got Foreigner's Double Vision album, when my mom says "you'll have to thank the guy at Record Realm because I couldn't remember what you said so I told him I was looking for something about people from another country and having eye problems". OMG, they figured it out 😂😲!
@@Teresia12 She was 54 (started family later than most) and I thought of her as the old mom who wasn't "with it", but holy crap I'm 57 now and think I'm still rolling with the times, LOL!
The 'Electric Light' part of The Electric Light Orchestra always reminds me of a damn bright electric light in my face... pure and strong! And the orchestra part is quite literally orchestral with all the strings (violins in a rock band in particular) make this band sparkle and dazzle the mind. Oh! And don't let me get started about the vocals and harmonies throughout! :)
Don't Bring Me Down is one of their best songs if you haven't reacted to it yet, definitely check it out. They also did the soundtrack to the movie Xanadu, which stars Olivia Newton John (Sandy from Grease). Kind of a corny movie, but the music is phenomenal. I loved it when I was a kid.
The meaning behind the band name as I see it: it's a light orchestra with electric instruments. Then, it's meant to light a glow within you, like inside an electric light.
I really appreciate the way you dive into these bands, and your dedication to old school fm rock, and even the late night fm rock(progressive). Its great that produce so much material. Thankyou.
ELO was my favorite band over 40 years ago. They still are. Thanks for reacting to these great songs. As I'm sure others will tell you, they have a whole lot more worth listening to.
Great reaction- your face showed the pleasure at the addition of each instrument’s contribution: violin, keyboard, drums. Please keep on diving deeper into ELO.
A "light orchestra" is a small one that does not have all of the orchestral instruments in it. Since ELO has only violins and cellos, it is a light orchestra.
ELO is one of the first albums I bought back in the mid 70s. Been a fan ever since. It's only looking back after time passes you realize Jeff Lynne is a musical genius at mixing styles and influences...
You really need to watch a video of ELO, as they are gener6 referred to, in order to grasp the full meaning of their name. Their concerts were as much a visual treat as it was musical.
If I"m not mistaken the first rock & roll artist to make use of the violin in pop music was " Ben E. King & The Drifters " in the song "This Magic Moment" ! Prior to that the Guitar & the Saxophone were the dominant instruments on hit songs !
I was literally getting suspended one time for having a knife at school that I left in my jeans ( I turned myself in and shit was chill. I went to a country school in the south.) the discipline coordinator had a 70s/80s station playing in his office 24/7 and this one came on. We took a break from the suspension and listened to this song cause we both agreed “ it’s a good one man “ 😂 song brings good times to the head
Ooh! All this talk about Violin made me think of an artist to recommend! The artist is Jean-Luc Ponty, and the song is New Country. (He plays the Electric Violin)
Chod you have got to go back in the archive on this band! Check out the Face the Music album. Reaction on Fire on High. Also check Can't Get It out of My Head.
I may be wrong, as I usually am, but I think I saw a show where there were two full sets of drums. I know you are a drummer. We had the same, a band and an orchestra. It takes skill to get a great sound out of a violin, cello and the rest. Our orchestra in grade school was awful deserving of a lot of laughterl.
@@beatnpotatoes Oh wow! From the videos I've seen that show was epic! I'm actually looking for a fan-filmed "Livin' Thing" from Wembley 2017, did you happen to film that song? I'm also looking for, "Evil Woman", and, " Telephone Line", from the concert if you happened to film those, and if you were pretty close to the stage to get a decent recording. Did you film any of the concert? :)
Hey Chod...wonderful reaction video. Best Cowbell song out there. Love the rhythm section with cowbell. Orchestra and background singers good, but cowbell makes it great. Ken
ELO had a string section when I first saw them, cello and strings, in a rock band setting. I think orchestra was thrown in to indicate they had strings
FYI...There are 2 other, completely different songs, that I know of that are also entitled Evil Woman. One is by a group called Spooky Tooth and the other by the group Crow, whose song was also covered by Black Sabbath. Might be fun to compare and react to all 3.
Chod..... I had to reach out to you because as a young person you have done so many YES songs and albums and I want you to review the New Yes group with their new album of course that is coming out on October 1, 2021. But until that time I think I will request you to react to their 2020 album, entitled, Fly From Here. It is 52 minutes. I am listening to it right now......and I am really digging it....it different with not many transitions as previous album.....but has the transitions of a smooth Jazz album....like some Peter White(Famous Jazz Acoustic Guitar) would create or David Benoit(the famous Jazz Pianist). It reminds me of "Tales of Topographic Oceans." Beautiful wonderful sound that remind me of "Games of Thrones." I am really started to liking it. Check it out!!!! It would be a critic from this album to the new one, "The Quest."
As now you appreciate the violin try listening to the "2Cellos". As I know you are also keen on the drummers part in tracks, perhaps start with Smells Like Teen spirit live from Sydney Opera House which start with a fantastic drum solo(for the first 2 minutes).
WELL I FIGURED YOU'D LIKE THIS, IT'S OFF THE SAME ALBUM ( FACE THE MUSIC ) AS STRANGE MAGIC :) RIGHT BEFORE THEIR EXPLOSION ALBUM ( A NEW WORLD RECORD )
Music is great, there are no rights or wrongs,it's all so subjective.i say this because I'm a man of a certain age and ELO have never really done anything for me.Certainly not bad but not a band I'd be in a rush to listen to.My neighbour/friend played 'Out Of The Blue' non-stop but i just couldn't really get into it.Time can change opinions so I listened to this all the way through again but the same feeling remains.Good review though Chod, nothing wrong with that at all..keep up the good work
For more violin goodness, try Andrew Bird. He works some *magic*. "Dark Matter," "Danse Caribe," "Not a Robot but a Ghost" and "Pulaski at Night" would all make good starting points.
If you want sad dramatic violin playing listen to "The Lark Ascending" by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The work has gained considerable popularity in Britain and elsewhere and has been much recorded between 1928 and the present day.
Chod you should react to Deep Purple Tribute to Jon Lord. Perfect Strangers. This song was done with the band and The London Philharmonic Orchestra. This was Amazing. Enjoyed the Evil Woman reaction. Good band ELO.

Orchestra and rock and roll in a perfect marriage. Jeff Lynne really is a genius... still!

Impossible to sit still with this song. Such a great groove. Drummer Bev Bevan highly underrated. 🎻🥁
this band put out so many good tunes. I mean really really good songs that still stick with me after 40+ years.
Rockaria is an underrated ELO classic which manages to combine opera and rock.
That's one of my faves! The last line of that song is fantastic! Jeff is an absolute songwriting monster!
The sweet talkin woman turned evil. :)

Some bands had violin in the 70’s but only ELO had cello players as actual traveling band members instead of just added players when needed.
Love the smile on your face as the song opens up... magic
