- I headed north today to get 2 steam hauled rail tours over shap within 19 minutes of each other. The first was Vintagetrains’ ‘The Shap Mountaineer’ from Birmingham New Street to Carlisle and return. The second was the Railway Touring Company’s ‘Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express with 34067 Tangmere.
An early start was needed to meet up with @crunchynutsteamfilms5043 and @harnettyrailways to get to Shap Wells to film GWR 5043 ‘Earl of Mount Edgcumbe’ going solo over Shap. Starting in Birmingham New Street 47773 would work the train as far as Carnforth with 1Z43 where the Castle would take over for the climb up Shap, and on to Carlisle. The tour lost time at Preston due to a reported medical emergency on board, leaving Carnforth 47 late.
The 47 was looped at Grayrig and followed the Castle up Shap.
Just under 20 minutes later we were treated to the sight of the second Steam tour, The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express from London Euston to Carlisle. A class 86 would work the train as far as Carnforth where SR Bulleid Pacific 34067 Tangmere would take over for the run up shap and the S&C with Diesel assistance.
With 5043 being a rare visitor to the north the main focus was on filming that so the return shots were filmed at Penrith where the Castle came screaming through at speed and Lancaster. Thanks Dan for the help with the second camera at Penrith. Was good to see @thrailwayvideos5393 @themodster @danielstrainsukofficial9133 @FullSteamAhead @doctordave12 e

Great filming of a cracking day in the North West GWR 5043 showing how it should be done without assistance, cheers 🎥
Thank you.
Spot on Luke , can’t go wrong with Shap Wells 👍Cracking show from the Castle.
Cheers stephen. I did plan on doing the summit but I was happy with shap wells. Maybe next time.
Great footage...hurtling through Penrith was a particular joy!
Thank you
Great set of shots. Brilliant shot of the Earl passing the platform. Last shot almost bombed, lol 🤣. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you. I did have a going away shot set up at Lancaster. Not included for obvious reasons. 😂
Awesome footage. 👍🏻
Thank you
I caught another steamer myself Luke and that’s the royal Scot on a tour to Worcester and I’ve caught her down at abbotswood junction slowing to take the line to the left to Worcester
great footage
Incredible mate!
Top draw
Thank you mate. Somewhere for us to go in the future
Brilliant shots mate, 5043 over Shap was top class and was great to spend another day out with you. Regards, Dan
Always a pleasure Dan. Another memorable performance from 5043
Thanks for sharing. I was at ELR. She seemed to be going well but with only a light load of 8 coaches plus the water carrier
which appeared to have sprung a leak.
Cheers. I did notice the water when watching back on my tv.
Luke, Your first trip to Shap looked successful with a great result. Regards, John
Cheers John. It was a good day. I did plan on the summit but settled for shap wells as I got chatting to people I hadn’t seen for a while.
And I’ve just been told that blue Peter is going to the Severn valley railway for testing before she’s allowed to be released back out on the mainline that’s about next week
Lovely video
Great video! Nice to have bumped into you at Penrith. Great chat!
Cheers mate. Great to see you too.
I was onboard the tour hauled by the castle and she certainly put on an amazing show that day. From realtime trains timings 34067 arrived in Carlisle just 4 minutes after 5043 had arrived.
Incase your wondering why the tour was running so late it was because a passenger had to be taken off in Preston as they had just had a heart attack so we needed to wait for an ambulance to arrive, apparently the air ambulance was involved. czcams.com/video/oXibOnDvEMo/video.htmlsi=WCfzoBh-GTfqMl74
Great Video mate I was at the East Lancashire Railway legends of steam gala I was tempted to see the Earl up the Shap but it was too far for me to travel. My video from the east Lancs is out now if you are interested
Thanks James. I’ll give it a watch.
Very good video :)
Thank you very much!
