- Woodturning Bee Hive Box
In this video I turned a lidded box out of a piece of Elm. I turned the shape and then used a beading tool to decorated it with the beading tool. I also used the CNC to carve a honey bee and inlaid it in the lid. The box is 5 1/2" x 7"

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. - Jak na to + styl

Thank you very much James!! I love my D-Way tools too!!
Great project, Carl! I love the hole in the box and the way you worked it into the design. Slow your CNC traverse speed (feed rate) to get crisper details. Your seal and fill was perfect on the bee-- I had to learn that the hard way, too. Robin, I loved the music tracks you chose.
Thank you so much Bud!! Also thanks for the tip on the CNC! Robin thanks you as well :)
Nice box
Thank you!

IT IS VERY REWARDING WHEN I GOT A LATH AND BEGAN TURNING CANDLE HOLDERS. TWO YEARS AGO IN JAN. I TURNED 31 WOODEN UP RIGHT BASES. AII DIFFERENT!
Very nice!
Thanks for uploading that Carl. I have just got my Simon Hope beading tool and I have a small piece of natural edged branch so I suspect a small box will soon be made using those..... Thanks very much for the inspiration. PS; It was great watching you all on the live last Saturday.
That's awesome John!! Thank you very much!!
Looks good Mate, I like the way you did the lid Carl. Cheers For now Desmond.

:) Happy 4th buddy!!
I find myself using a spindle almost more than any tool..
The spindle gouge u used is what size and what brand...love watching ur videos and have learned alot from them. Thanks for ur time...jeff..
Alta iowa
Thank you very much Jeff!! This is a 5/8" spindle gouge by Thompson tools
Do you think that that shape, with a rough texture (with no finish - maybe aged) could promote wild bees?
عمل جدا رائع
شكرا جزيلا!!
Carl. Is there a way to sharpen the beading too? I’ve looked at a set at woodcraft but I wanted to learn a little more first
You sharpen them the same way you sharpen other tools, just the bevel.
Looks more like an urn.
круто весело спасибо.
Большое спасибо!!
What a great turning! Thanks for sharing Carl. What size beading tool did you use on this project from D way?
Thank you, it's a 3/8"
Great project, What size beading tool did you use for this?
Thank you Tom! I used the 3/8"
Interesting color of Elm, could you clarify whether Chinese Elm, American Elm or Wych Elm. I've worked with American Elm and what you have looks like it machines well.
I'm not sure which one it is but, it did say C ELM on it :)
Turned out really nice Carl, always learn something. Thanks again and stay safe, cheers from MT. What kind of respirator mask is that?
It looks like one of those RZ Masks.
Thank you so much!! Here's a link to the RZ mask,

I want a beading tool but I am hesitant to buy one because I cannot figure out how to sharpen it, would you mention (or better yet demonstrate) how you sharpen your beading chisel.
I'll show it in the next video. It's really easy you just sharpen the bevel.
Will different tools make different types of shavings? Or is it the dryness or wetness of the wood? Or certain species make different shavings? Or the sharpness of the tool?
All of the above :) Most of the shavings are similar but there is slight differences in endgrain and crossgrain. Definitely a difference in the sharpness of the tool! Dull tools will make more sawdust.
That's great, Carl. I was waiting for Winnie the Pooh to show up! Take care. Bill
Hahaha....Thanks Bill!
Great job again mate. Where did you get those beading tools we can't get them in Australia
Thank you Troy! Here's the link for the beading tool. d-waytools.com/beading-tools/
@@CarlJacobson the carl I just ordered a six pack of tools can't wait to dress up some of my turnings
What do you do with all the wood shavings?
We recycle most of them in the yard, the rest goes in the yard debris.
This is just gawjus
Thank you Laura!!
Very nice, Carl! Thanks for sharing 😃
Is there a Scandinavian connection to your last name?
Regards
Lars (from Denmark 😃)
Thank you Lars! Yes on my dads side :)
How do you sharpen the beading tool?
I show how to sharpen it in this video around the 10 min mark.

For some reason I keep thinking Winnie the Pooh. Beautiful.
:) YES!!
