Madison Square Garden Network (MSG Network) Rangers Hockey Open (1988-1989) 2 versions

This is the first generic open used by MSG after changing the look of their logo. This open was used for all sports telecasts on the network by changing the video in the boxes going through the tunnel. I posted 2 versions showing how the movement of the boxes could be changed giving both the producer and editor a certain amount of creative license to vary the look. In version 2 a young Sam and JD are on hand for a brief appearance. Once again the music credit goes to Michael Karp and Fred Manfra handling the voice-overs with his golden pipes. This was the open in use when I started working at MSG so it remains my favorite open.

The memories! This was my first taste of the NHL as an 8-year old. Tomas Sandstrom, Kelly Kisio, Ulf Dahlen, Tony Granato, Jan Erixon. Hell, even Guy Lafleur and Marcel Dionne were on that team...both as shadows of their former selves obviously. The team fell apart in the 2nd half of the season and GM Phil Esposito canned Michel Bergeron and put himself behind the bench...which resulted in six straight losses. The final two of the regular season and then four to the Penguins in the Patrick Semis. Interestingly enough, the second intro shown here was the first-ever NHL game for Mike Richter. Despite the loss, he played a very solid game and kept the Rangers in it until the end.

They totally collapsed in '89 after a strong start. The second video is for the last game - getting swept by the Penguins. You can tell MSG had given up on them since Michel Bergeron is still in the video -- by then, he'd been fired.
