More than 400 people have reportedly been detained in Russia for publicly mourning the death of Alexei Navalny, who died in an Arctic penal colony on Friday at age 47. He was the most prominent critic of Vladimir Putin in Russia and was serving a 19-year sentence at the time of his death on “extremism” charges. U.S. President Joe Biden and other Western leaders directly have blamed Putin for Navalny’s death. Prison authorities say Navalny died of “sudden death syndrome,” but his family has not yet been given access to his body to allow for an independent autopsy. For more, we speak with Russian American writer Masha Gessen, who charts Navalny’s political evolution from an ethnonationalist libertarian tapping into “xenophobic discontent” to an anti-corruption activist promoting a vision of civic nationalism. “I have no doubt … that he was killed,” says Gessen. “Putin was determined to see Navalny die in prison.”

      US life expectancy (2022):
      Male: 74 years
      Female: 80 years
      Russia life expectancy (2022):
      Male: 67 years
      Female: 78 years
If it really was "potato, potatoe", we wouldn't see these differences.
The US undeniably has its problems, and personally, I would never dream of living there. But unfortunately, the data shows that Russian life is harder than American life for the people who live it. And the difference between the male and female life expectancy means that Russia creates widows much faster than the US does, so they stay widowed for longer.
Do I think this is the best way to compare countries? I don't know. It could be better, maybe. But it's *definitely* preferable to comparing state-sanctioned murder to vaccines, which are two completely unrelated things.
And do I think that Russia's low life expectancy figures prove that the US is somehow "better" overall? Well, again, yes and no.
The Kremlin's story is always that a government should look after its people by making them "strong". That's fine, but their idea of doing this is to make other nations fear them. I think that's the wrong approach.
Russian medical facilities have improved in the last 20 years, and to me, that's the REAL way to make a people strong. You look after your people, so they can live longer and enjoy it more.
So I give the Russian state some credit for dealing with some of those medical issues. But they still have a long way to go, to reach the standards of health that citizens of western countries enjoy - even the US, which is the *worst of all* western countries in this area.
I would love to see even more improvements in Russia's health system in the future, so that the life expectancy and overall health of the Russian population (especially the male half) improves.
I could say similar things about education, roads and so on. The old saying "duraki dorogi" (fools and roads), as a shorthand for Russia's national problems, still seems to be an issue. Not that Russians are stupid - of course they aren't. There are just a lot of people there who live in communities where the standard of education isn't good, and also a lot who have swum in puddles propaganda their whole lives, so they can't see the world straight. And meanwhile, outside of a few prominent highways, the roads are a nightmare!
If Putin were to drop all his imperial Peter-The-Great nonsense and focus on these real life improvements instead, I would be his biggest fan. Honestly, it would be great. I would proudly wear his face on a t-shirt, if he made that turn.
I hope he does it ... but given the increased percentage of Russia's GDP that's being directed towards the military now, I fear that he won't.
I think he's going to double down on the whole "Let's make the world respect us" thing, based on centuries-old conspiracies about how everyone is always trying to destroy Russia and blah blah blah.
It's a ridiculous idea, because it's clear to everyone outside of Russia that before Putin started being an ass to his neighbours, the general world attitude towards that country was complete indifference. Nobody knew, nobody cared. That's not great, but it's a million miles away from these paranoid fantasies about how everyone is trying to 'destroy' it all the time.
And more importantly, these paranoid fantasies are no excuse for diverting money away from the things that Russian people really need.
If you are a Russian person, Inanymin, you should be hoping for these things too. For your parents, for yourself, for your children and for your countrymen. This is what you should be praying for - and I think you know that.

Navalny was a CIA and MI 6 asset. The West poured a lot of money into him. He was NOT popular in Russia.
56% of Russians disliked him. 18% liked him. You can see his racist videos where he calls Central Asians ‘insects’ and Georgians ‘rodents. Navalny was a traitor put there by the West to overthrow the government.
He was NOT starved. He went on a hunger strike and had heart failure. He was never poisoned.

Navalny survived an extremely dangerous poison attack which kept him in a coma for 6 weeks. I am guessing this made his health somewhat frail to begin with (disclosure: as a physician in an unrelated field, my expertise is limited). In prison he was subjected to harsh conditions such as exposure to cold and starvation. There was also a period during which Navalny refused food as a form of protest. Therefore, I think it is safe to assume that his health, including his immune system, continued to deteriorate. Under these conditions, even relatively easy to treat medical problems can quickly become life threatening. For example, he might have caught a viral infection turned bacterial pneumonia, received inadequate treatment, and died of septic shock within days. In sum, when you are killing someone in this way you cannot always choose the timing.

@@glmx778 thank you for your perspective. This is something I have been thinking as well. Surviving the nerve agent poisoning must leave severe consequences. And death due to blood clots can be a ticking bomb.
Of course if Putin wanted Navalny to survive he would have been given house arrests or sent to a prison somewhere with milder climate and conditions.
But the refusal to release the body and conduct an independent autopsy could indicate poisoning.
Putin has had many opponents and critics killed, but the timing of this death seems quite inconvenient for him.
