  • "The Man Who Knew Infinity" is a new movie about the life of Srinivasa Ramanujan, an obscure, self-taught mathematician from India who was mentored by G.H. Hardy at Cambridge University during the height of British colonialism. Their collaboration changed math and science forever, says Emory University mathematician Ken Ono. In this video, Ono talks about his role as the math consultant for the movie, and how his life and work are inspired by Ramanujan.

    He died at the age of 32!
    just imagine if he stayed alive for another 2 or 3 decades... the amount of knowledge and discoveries that he would present to the world is unthinkable

      sam hue. --- I wont mind if it was his destiny to live only for 32 (dunno why the early 30s seems a recurring theme in the deaths of great men - Jesus, Adi Sankara, Vivekananda ) but if he had spent these years in the US, instead of UK, the world would have benefited more undoubtedly. Besides, the world would have known about him without the need for a movie.
      One of the things that I never quite understood is that the state from where Ramanujan hailed is known to celebrate the life of any and every local that achieved any thing close to fame. But somehow, Ramanujan was forgotten -- his life should be in text books; there should be a chair in every Math/Computer Sci. dept. Fact is even IITs ignored Ramanujan. Very sad.

    As an analytical number theorists this movie was a big hit and a small miss at the same time. The ubiquitous subtleties in the background, the zeta function, the master theorem, and the actual partition function were nice touches but nothing beats the mathematics itself in verbage. Seeing the magic squares at the beginning made me realize it wasn't going to be some knock-off film, so I held my breath waiting for some Intuitional understanding that sort of came. The closest to the conversational mathematics came when Hardy talked about the negative values of the gamma function. Euler and Jacobbi were mentioned in this film but the master of prime's Bernhard Riemann was no where to be mentioned. I can understand direchlet not being mentioned but Ramanujuan's work is so deeply connected to the Riemann hypothesis. Ramanujan's character was too subtle as well. One of the more cathartic events for a mathematics video was the mental calculation battle, along with the overt explanation of partitions. There are documented accounts of him working for 30 hours straight then sleeping for 20 hours. His time at Trinity college did meet some backlash due to his minority status, but his overall now widely considered bipolar seemed to be his biggest ally and inhibitor. His strict disliking of proofs was well documented and definitely properly represented in the film, as well as his vegetarian diet. The acting was phenomenal, no doubt a stellar performance from every actor involved. Stephen Fry is even in this movie, of which his presence seems to have a correlating success rate. Overall I would give this movie 4.5 out of 5. I would recommend it to any individual, the balance between satisfying the mathematicians and the overall General Public was well-defined in this movie.

      I felt that, unlike many a film, where they dumb things down too much, I would say, haha, like The Theory of Everything (I like it, but there's something naive, I've always felt, about some of the statements I feel a professional physicist would never make) something rang true about The Man Who Knew Infinity, I'm not surprised they had a consultant...well, haha, they probably always do, but they could have not listened to him...A Beautiful Mind also didn't feel as naive as The Theory of Everything...even the way things were, the interactions, etc, seemed somewhat real to me, in this film...

    • @archangecamilien1879
      @archangecamilien1879 Před 4 lety

      It's more the way it's done that apealed to me, the atmosphere, the camaraderie between Littlewood and Hardy, haha, rather than just the fact that it's about Ramanujan and math...I mean...something not as cheesy as you would expect, about this film...there are countless films about math I only watched once and didn't care much for...

    The reason Ramanujan was inspired to come up with the mathematical equations was because he came from a family with a long lineage of astrologers. Both his father and paternal grandfather were experts in Sanskrit and the Vedas, they were priests and made their living conducting rituals in private homes. They were also honorary astrologers at the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple. His mom had a lot of influence on him discussing the astrological theories at an early age and that inspired him to learn this complicated subject.
    Astrology is one of the great sciences that is lost due to foreign invasions and lack of appreciation for such sciences.

      @theAraAra Před 8 lety +6

      +1noneuser I beg to disagree. I am not sure Ramanujan himself attributed his intuition to astrology. It was the Goddess of Namagiri, the family deity, who wrote equations on his tongue and told him to go overseas - at least according to him. Please read the biography The Man Who Knew Infinity by Robert Kanigel on which this film is based, if you haven't done so already.
