  • Ferrofluid is a liquid that reacts to a magnetic field. It's usually made from a mixture of oil and tiny iron particles. Today we're going to look at 4 different demonstrations involving ferrofluid and powerful neodymium magnets.

      Interesting enough an idea similar to this is being researched. Rather than changing when in a magnetic field though, it's changed with the application of electricity, from a liquid to a solid.

    The reason that makes you think of Spiderman is probably because venom, which was the strange black substance that fell from space and came out of a meteor, looks kinda identical in the weird way that it just kind of moved around. This was featured in Spiderman 3 during the scene where he was with Mary Jane in the park. :) FYI

    I actually made ferro fluid in chemistry class. It took about half an hour of mixing and chellating and condensing to get it down to the final product. Our team was finished first, and the professor and all the students came over to watch as we manipulated the fluid with a magnet. Fantastic fun in chemistry class.

    The word "ferrous" does NOT come from the Fe symbol on the periodic table. That makes as much sense as saying that "see you" came from the text-slang "cya". The symbol for iron came from the word "ferrous," not the other way around.

    • @williamgalley1481
      @williamgalley1481 Před 9 lety +8

      Thomas B Well, the symbol itself came from latin "ferrum", to be nitpicky. That etymology is much more obvious in French (iron is "fer" in French).

      I am about to Google this... my name tag for work is kept in place by some type of magnet. There is a non-magnetized plate on the back of the name tag & then there is a very powerful magnet that goes inside my shirt. I have noticed that after working all day the spot where me magnet rested on my chest was sore & red. I am curious if it is due to me either being allergic to the substance that makes up the magnet, or if the magnetic field itself was to blame?

    • @sivalley
      @sivalley Před 10 lety

      ksalbrecht88 You are most likely to be allergic to the nickel plating on the metal bar that goes under your shirt. Try wrapping the magnet bar with a layer of cling wrap. If it ever causes you to break out with blisters, see a dermatologist.

    • @Brntrogdor
      @Brntrogdor Před 10 lety

      First off, even the strongest small magnets like this have to be very close to have a strong pull on anything... then there's the fact that there really isn't much Iron in our blood.
      I've heard, that if you were to wear strong magnetic jewelry long enough, it could have negative side effects due to pulling too much iron to one part of your body... google it yourself, and remember, everything you read on the internet, IS TRUE.

Perhaps if some sort of coolant can be mixed in without losing either the magnetic or heat transferring properties, a cooling system that runs on less energy than one requiring a pump could be designed?
