  • Ferrofluid is a liquid with nano-sized iron particles that was developed by NASA in the 1960s. Artist Eric Mesplé has been experimenting with this magnetic liquid in his art for the past dozen years, and the results are mesmerizing.

That’s so cool! That time must be wrapped up in a lot of memories for you. I love it when thirsty minds can find oases to settle a while and expand their territory, the challenge rewarded by the growth. I hope your time there was fulfilling; I sometimes miss being around people of similar interests. The spark of wanting to know how, or why, of finding new problems and solutions to them, it doesn’t go out, but it can be harder to find camaraderie in it.
The piece looks like it would have been a bit trippy to see. I’m still not sure if this piece meant to convey that the magnet (it being INSIDE the fluid is such a great idea, seemingly obvious, but I’ve not seen experiments with it) is drawn to movement through some camera or series of cameras arrayed around the sphere, or if the movement was directed by another mechanism. As I scrolled through here I wasn’t sure if I’d find people discussing it or mulling it over. I can’t imagine seeing it in person!

Eric seems quite decisive, definitely knowing what he wants to create. One of the biggest challenges I continue to face when wanting to create is indecisiveness. I often end up completely paralyzed with it, unable to bring myself to do anything at all, & so I never begin. I think it may be a weird & sneaky form of procrastination, manifesting as a symptom of a deep-seated fear of failure. Which is why I greatly appreciated it when he mentioned his many failures & frustrations. He's given me hope that I can still potentially face or overcome my fear of creating things that are "unworthy", "ugly", or simply doubting that I even have the necessary skills to bring my visions to life as tangible, finished pieces- whether those pieces are little doodles in a sketchbook, or complex kinetic, interactive, sensory-stimulating, or conceptual installations!

I feel like a table top with that fluid on the surface and strong magnets underneath that do a computer choreographed dance would be sweet. They could be electro magnets with variable voltage, or they could be rare earth magnets that adjust in proximity to the surface underneath. Like it is cool to do the thing where it mimics someone, but a well executed dance would be cool too. It wouldn’t be complex

Question: how would these highly magnetized pieces potentially affect observers who came near them who had things such as body piercings, metal implants, or pacemakers? We know what MRIs can do because of magnets where they can yank piercings out of your face and not care what flesh is holding them. I wonder if this guy has created a protection field surrounding each piece. Just a thought.

MRIs have a magnetic field of 1.5-3 Tesla, I don't think this would be anywhere near that. I'm not sure though it's an interesting point, I think the more problematic thing would be if the artist ever needed an MRI, as any ferro fluid in his skin would get pulled
