  • @n085fs

    I feel that the next step for GA is that the "tower", which soon won't even need to be a physical tower, will have the ability to link to the plane via the transponder so that they can set all the flight director details.
    Instead of being told to taxi via G, F, A1, cross rwy 17, B, hold short of active rwy 08... they'll just pop that into your setup and you'll see the arrows on your screen.
    The fright of it is if they accidently change the wrong aircraft's settings.
    The bonus of it is if a pilot is incapacitated, they'll be able to tune NAV1 to the ILS and set the AP to automatically fly the Approach. The only thing the tower will need to instruct a passenger to do is cut the mixture or otherwise turn off the engine once on the ground.

      Agree. To really get with the 'state of the art', Cirrus need to get rid of the TSIO-550, and get the Continental 300hp TDI engine in (same engine as the Diamond DA-50). Even in the G7 form, the SR22 still guzzles more than 20 g/hour in the climb, and not much better in the cruise. The DA-50 will climb at 12 g/hr, and 10 in the cruise. Huge difference.

    Its a great shame they didn't upgrade the engine. To all intents and purposes, the aircraft has identical ability as the G5. Its a lot to pay for upgraded avionics, auto-tank change and cupholders. I know Cirrus are very well aware of the engine "issue", surely they could have delayed launch of G7 until they had it sorted? Perhaps they have plans already for a G8 in another 7 or 8 years?

    • @MikeKobb
      @MikeKobb Před 5 měsíci

      I've read an opinion that I think is probably correct -- they wanted a good training story to tell insurance companies for people buying the SF-50. Having a cockpit with tons of commonality, they can argue that owners with G7 time will be more ready for the step up to the jet, and will hopefully be able to get reasonable insurance in a tightening market. I think we'll see a new engine sooner rather than later.

  • @droge192
    @droge192 Před 5 měsíci +5

    Great, comprehensive video! Somewhat disappointed to see (and hear) the same old gas-guzzling TSIO-550 in the G7. The SR22 is a very thirsty aircraft. Cirrus will not be up there with the state of the art, until they move to a 300hp TDI engine, sipping Jet A. Check out the SR22's fuel economy compared to the Diamond DA-50. The Diamond has almost *half* the fuel consumption!

When pressed, the majority of Cirrus owners will admit to a similar bitter / sweet ownership experience. I will re-commit to full ownership only when Cirrus releases a FADEC Diesel ( Jet A1) power plant. Till then i will rent and let someone else deal with the existing 1960’s engine maintenance budget uncertainties.

    There is no doubt Cirrus made the G7 to upsell its customers to the SF50. The G7, in my opinion, falls way short of a revolutionary or even a striking upgrade. Over two years in planning and design offering only touch screen avionics, which is only a moderate upgrade and a nonevent for many pilots. I fly a TBM with a G1000 and prefer the knobs and buttons over a G3000. For those with a G5/G6 the G7 isn't worthy of consideration.

    Does Cirrus offer a 5-point seatbelt harness? Having the buckle up at the top of the abdomen is horribly uncomfortable. In the airliners we have a "crotch strap" that attaches and allows you to pull the buckle apparatus down to your belt buckle level, making it much more comfortable.

    Really interesting video and very informative. Pity no discussion about performance speeds etc. There is no doubt this aircraft is a fantastic tourer with huge capability and ease of use when you have had the proper training and can master all the screens. It is certainly a mini airliner, not really a hands on aircraft to fly. Far better on the autopilot.
    I am more of a hands on pilot that as well as touring, likes the thrill of poling it around the sky in my RV6.
    My slight worry is that it is also an aircraft that people with high income will buy, but their flying ability and skill does not match. I hope a full training course is made mandatory on purchase. One of the reasons I say this, is because being an ex aviation insurance broker and also an underwriter at one time, I well remember the early days of of Cirrus owners. There is no doubt this aircraft is the future compared to PA28’s & 172’s that are more than 60 years old in design ! Lastly Jon, you seem to have enjoyed this more than the Spitfire- Sacrilege!!! 😂

      I like hand flying too - in fact this flight was all hand flown, with the exception of a short segment when we tested the level button. Like cars, we all have our preferences. Some like a classic - I used to have a triumph which I would take out for a 'drive' - I prefer the comfort and economy of my Skoda for work and long distance trips.

    It’s Garmin hardware and software. Nothing to do with anything Cirrus, although they want credit for it. This is common among several manufacturers.

    Thank goodness we had the Spitfire when we were scrambling when somebody “rang the bell like hell” during the Second World War is all I’ll say! Also if hiring from brakes off to brakes on for an hourly flight, I think I prefer the Robin DR400 or the Slingsby Firefly!

    A very interesting new Avionic fit that clearly has the same menu structure at the Garmin GTN650/750 so transitioning to the G7 should be a low stress affair. It is a demonstration of how far GA avionics have come in the last twenty years, I can remember Garmin introducing the GNS430 and it was considered a game change…….. now it just looks so clunky!

      @@TheFlyingReporter you are more than welcome to come and fly my Garmin GTN650 equipped Robin as see how a well integrated modern avionics retro-fit works in the real world, The aircraft is also about to be fitted with the Electroair electronic ignition system. This EIS is expected to drag the Lycoming into the modern age giving better starting , smoother running and save 1USG/Hr in fuel consumption. This might make an interesting video.

      I guess that's a good reason why all aeroplanes, especially smaller ones, avoid thunderstorms by a very wide margin. I don't know the exact answer to your question, but most modern aeroplanes have fully glass cockpits these days with redundancy built in.
