NITRO VS ELECTRIC (RC FORMULA 1 COMPARISION) 4K

  • A little comparison between two lovely rc cars. Tamiya F201 Ferrari F2001 and the Kyosho KF01 SP with optional 2 speed. I love both these remote controlled 1/10 scale F1 cars, but there's just something special about driving the nitro that isn't there with the electric. At the same time the electric is probably more usable if you live in crowded areas where people might get annoyed. Thankfully everyone I've encountered seems to love that nitro sound, and they are drawn to the rc car in a positive manner.

My family have worked with Renault F1 team since they was called United colours of Benetton. And my uncle is an engineer. And he built in 1995 a remote control version of the F1 car of that year with a petrol engine. It was so massive, from spoiler to nose cone was around 5/6 feet. We used to race it up the starting straight at Silverstone on F1 test days and it was so fast

I raced a VOne SII for a couple of years and the gear changes are interesting. To get the best results out of the .15 engine at the time was to have the gear change very quickly, within about 1/2 second to take advantage of the toque of the little screamer. Most people let it rev out a bit till it changes, by then its lost its momentum in first.
Would have been good to see them on a track, being on road like that doesn't really do them justice.

I agree the nitro sounds more realistic. However, a big advantage with electric is “dial up power”. Motor selection (size and Kv) can yield phenomenal power. The major weight component is the battery. With nitro the major weight component is the engine, and its energy output is a function of cubic capacity. Want more power? Not so easy to fit in a bigger engine.

It would have made way more sense to use a F103 or F104. Not a F201. Both the rear drive chassis would have been 50% quicker than the f201 with the same power train, they also feel scary to drive, unlike the f201 which is just like driving a regular touring car.
The F103/104 are just far more exciting to drive than the F201 by a large margin. The feeling you should get driving a scale F1.
There is a reason the f201 never took off.

that's actually one of the big reasons electric rc stuff got so much more prevalent: while it is a bit more convenient and thus a lot more attractive to a company/industry trying to keep their barrier to entry as low as possible the real difference is that the electric stuff is _absurdly_ survivable and has far less critical parts to prevent easy repairs unless it has been specifically designed not to be. in short if you crash an electric car you can put it back together in reasonable working order fairly easily at little to no cost (even high-end ones are surprisingly cheap to turn back into a car after they've been turned into assorted components strewn all over the ground), crash a foamboard airplane straight into asphalt at 140 miles an hour and there's a pretty good chance all you loose is the foam just throw a new one together and stick the important parts in there and you're back in the air with a new plane of a new design in 15 to 30. you simply don't need nearly as much delicate mechanical parts in an electric design and the motors themselves can live through hell and run while beat to heck and full of sand (granted they won't like it one bit). clip a curb with a gas car though and there are good odds it'd destroy or denature everything from the wheel all the way up the linkages to the motor...really didn't help that a lot of them were straight up _designed_ to be totaled easily but that's a corporate issue not an engineering one (gas stuff had an image of being finicky as hell and all too fragile because they often _made_ them to be finicky and fragile).
in short gas models are meant to be something you collect and show off electric models are meant to be something you have fun destroying.

Did that after market company that made/makes parts for that Tamiya F-1 series chassis's, ever finish or release to the public the front end hydro differential like a torque converter. They claimed to be offering two versions, one was just a basic hydro-torque converter differential and the other unit, had a inertia counter-weighted pendulum that controlled a left or right traction bias to one or the other front wheels... The way I understand it to supposedly to work, was if you are in a corner, turning towards the right, the pendulum would throw to the left, via inertia and the hydro fluid with-in the front diff, would divert more fluid away from the one side, and basically starve that side, while the other side of the diff, got more fluid, to have that front wheel pull...
Please note, I do not know what direction or which side for that above example got more pass-thru power/torque...as the article kinda didn't explain it all that well.... I would assume that if you are turning right, and the diverter inside, being controlled by the weighted pendulum, now being thrown towards the left, would in what I think should happen (I could be wrong) that you would want that front left wheel getting the power and torque, beings there is more down pressure being applied to that front corner due from turning right. While the right wheel is kinda barely getting any power and torque, I would assume still enough to over come the drag factor and possibly slowing the car a little bit or causing it to spin out.. I just think both are still suppose to pull hard, just, one side pulls harder, to steer / pull it through the corner. Please note, I do not know if this would help or hinder the over all car/chassis systems performance? Does this kit add more weight? Is the pendulum counter weight adjustable in how hard it is allowed to divert from a 50/50 or neutral straight forwards pull, to turning left of right at what ever percentage, then allowing a 90/10 or a 10/90? Is the pendulum spring loaded to automatically return to center or neutral point when the chassis is rolling straight? or is the pendulum centered, based on what gravity is doing to it? As you can see, I have questions..lol... Can other fluids be used to allow for more adjustments?
They only showed one poor black & white photo of that (work-in-progress) front hydro differential torque converter and is was very grainy. But, you could kinda tell, that there was three rotors or straight vain fans, samwitched together, kinda like a typical ball differential, the center bladed fan, had the gear sprocket and the two outer bladed fans, one on each side, those two, attached to the half-shafts/drive-shafts to drive the front wheels, of course.. On the front of the differential case halves, the mechanism seemed to have a wiper that pivoted, assuming to scoop the rotating fluid to both, or left or right side, pending how much the level was swung/pivoted. The pendulum kinda looked like the tic toc arm of an upside down musician's metrodrone. Which is why I question if it is adjustable, like on one of those tic tok frequency generators are. by sliding the counter weight up or down, to create more thrown weight to force the fluid to one side or the other or possibly to over come the hydro forces with-in? I don't know, but have been waiting to see somebody play with one of those for a few years now... and if anybody would be playing with one of those after market hop-up parts/kits, I can only assume you would be the one, simply due to how well you convey the details of things.
There was a few off-road and I think only a few pan car chassis's that ran a REAR hydro system, but had nothing to do with left to right side traction control or biasing. Those units where purely just a dampening system or torque converter as we know them to be in most of today's automobiles, as these series of RC chassis's only ran those on the spur gear, if I remember correctly? Please feel free to correct me on that note. They were a hit, once they were dialed in for the launch and mashed throttle, for traction control. But, was a nightmare to get to the point, as they were messy during that learning curve. Fluid viscosity allowed for many adjustments. The amount you put in, allowed for adjustment, tolerance of how close the blade/fans/vanes were to each other, also was an adjustment, of course, on top of gear sizes, etc.. .But, this front unit, they talked about only once, that I know of, been waiting a long time.. For all I know, it was a flop, and caused more issues, they it could have helped? or, maybe, it just didn't work at all, LOL... The idea, for what little bit of info that was covered in that small article, was really intriguing to me. If it did work, could something like this, then be implemented into both the front, and rear diff's, and possible the center diff? Sure, this opens up a whole mess of junk to go wrong in the heat of a race, but, I do like tinkering with silly stuff too.
It does remind me of the era of the famed, RC-10, and one private manufacturer that talked allot of stuff, about a bolt on kit, to make the RC-10 4WD/belt driven... and, years went by, and nothing...lol... I speculate, that was due from the massive flood of the RC industry dropping bunches of AWD & 4WD chassis's none stop, so, why bother with a bolt on kit that might have been more problematic then what it was worth? I don't know if they ever even released a single kit to the public? Still woulda been neat to see an AWD/4WD belt driven old school gold pan RC-10... Pardon the novel.. I am sorry, just seeing this, brought up these thoughts and was curious is all.

That fuel car definitely gives the better F1 experience- would love to try someday- but not gonna happen for me- $$ and neighbors. So it's electric for me...

There has always been that something extra with nitro over electric cars. I love electric but nitro is so much more fun. It's a real working engine with 2 speed transmission, what's not to love about plus you can go and go as long as you have fuel. Batteries need charging so nitro always wins for me.

should have been cutting the lines, every one or skip top speed is easy. Built grasshoppers with bigger motors, taller gears,+2 batteries.

Nitro is my wet dream But it is very expensive for here (Latin America) like the basic is 500 to 600 USD car only, it's like say 3000USD for an American (comparing purchasing power obviously )

Rear ball diff let go. The original threaded pins were useless. Tamiya made a stronger set a while after the f201 was released. We raced these in a class, by far my favourite back in the day. Get some new diff pins.👍🏻👍🏻

I had an older losi 5T but in the UK it’s finding places to run without someone calling the police because of the noise so I switched to an X max and infraction etc although I do miss the fun of a real engine

Solution: Combining _nitro_ and _electric_ cars will make one better than either alone.
    NITRO + ELECTRIC = _NITRIC_
A nitric car will make for an _acid trip._
(Er, sorry for the bad pun).
