    This is probably one of the most educated reactions I have heard of this intensely talented "tribute" band. As a music educator myself, I was so astonished at the musical level of each of the musicians in this band that I had to do a double take to realize that it was not Chicago, Steely Dan, Earth Wind & Fire, or the Brecker Brothers, or Deep Purple, or Blood, Sweat & Tears, or Karen Carpenter, etc., etc!

    I am 69 years old and have been a fan of good music since my early teens. I now listen to Leonid and Friends most nights since I discovered them and they are the best antidote to watching depressing news coming from the ongoing wars that our mad world politicians keep on subjecting us all to. If only the world was run by musicians to unite us all with love and empathy.

    One of the most difficult bands to do covers for is Steely Dan. The first time I heard them do "My Old School" I became an instant fan.

    Thanks to technology this tribute band has managed to make these covers sound even more sonically pleasing than the originals. Better mixing equipment, better software, better microphones, combined with world class talent.

    Saw Chicago in the 70’s and 3 times last year. Saw Leonid last year in New Orleans and was blown away. I play his videos for people but only let them hear it and everyone thought it was Chicago! They are so talented and do a great show. Their Earth Wind & Fire is badass too.

    I've watched this video of Leonid and Friends, at least fifty times, and each time, tears of joy start rolling down my face. I especially love the lead guitarist, but the whole band is phenomenal. Sadly there have been some changes in the band's lineup since this video of 25 or 6 to 4, but they still excel at sounding as good as, if not better than the original recordings.

    They did Vehicle by The Ides Of March and when the lead singer of 'IOM' heard
    them, he thought it was himself and his group performing.

    I know this comment is a year old, but you nailed these guys. I've been following them from Leonid's birthday tribute song (His 1st Chicago tribute song was a birthday gift to himself). I have said, many times, if people only knew, these guys would have a few million subs by now... They truly ARE the best & to see them 'live' is a dream come true. Oh, Peter Cetera has heard them play & he thinks the world of this group.👍

    Have seen these guys & gals, several times. They dropped one of my all time favorites One Fine Morning by Lighthouse right before they started their '23 Spring Tour. It's one of the greatest horn songs ever recorded and these guys absolutely smoke it. They amaze me every time I hear them. If that wasn't enough the thing that makes them even more special is after having met them backstage they are some of the nicest people you will ever meet and are thrilled to be able to come to America and perform.

    Thanks for the reminder of this video. I remember the first time I heard them as well and it was a crazy revelation. It is probably why I find my way to the Chicago Live performance of this song at Tanglewood. This Terry Kath solo is even more amazing. What a wonderful band. Everything about this Leonid & Friends recording is a sincere effort of replicating the studio version. Quite the tribute indeed!

    Fantastic, finally someone who reacts to Leonid & Friends. Not only do they play tributes to Chicago with incredible precision, they take on the Ides of March, Blood, Sweat and Tears,and Earth, Wind, and Fire with equally high quality. I've seen performances of them where Danny Seraphine - the original drummer of CTA/Chicago - sits in replacing the brilliant Igor on the drums.
    Thanks for doing this.

    Their versions of "September" from Earth Wind and Fire and Chicago's "You're The Inspiration" are 2 of my favorites of theirs.. What's even more amazing is non of them except Ksenia (the blonde usually backup singer) speak English - there's a video of them talking about how they have discussions when working up a new song to make sure the accents and pronunciation of words is right. If you like these kinds of bands, two others really worth checking out is the Lexington Lab Band of Lexington, Kentucky and the Hindley Street Country Club out of southern Australia - both on CZcams and both made up of top musicians and singers in their areas. Using your terms, Lexington might be more of a tribute band (going for matching the original sounds) while HSCC is more a cover band - making the songs their own. Also, amazing to see Cool Edit Pro still around - haven't seen that in decades - first DAW I ever used :)

      I'll check those out! And every PC I've owned for the past 15 years has CEP on it. It's an old copy I got years ago. Simple plugins, easy UI. For me, who started with reels and razor blades, it's the best visual for me. Not cluttered and overpowered. Just right for radio imaging and production. I've used all the softwares and some are better than others, but for what I do and for how well I know that program, it's great. But that's just me!
      Cheers!

    Hi Eric, this is a great tribute. I have a bit of a problem with many lousy tribute bands selling tickets for a price I would only pay for the original. But this is good, and the guitar player just needs one pedal... Last week, there started a tv show in Netherlands called Battle of the Bands where tribute bands compete, very interesting, and Golden Earrring drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk is one of the jury members (you remember Radar Love?). I wonder if that format will make it to the USA, there must be many tribute bands there.

    I too love this group and Chicago has been my favorite group since they came out. Note for note I can find little to no difference between them and the Real band. So why do they sound better?
    Every instrument and singer has a microphone.The mixing is then the difference.The total sound blend is filled so that even tho the same sounds, mixing today is much better than then. Plus, a musical genius is putting the entire sound together...Leonid was one of Russia's most talented music experts.
    They play the same notes but the recording and mixing makes the sound better.

    If you want to do pop artists try a Dutch singer named Davina Michelle. She was discovered by Pink when Pink was doing the Glamour bit “you sang my song”. Davina covered “What about Us”. Pink was blown away and when Pink’s Beautiful trauma tour came through Holland Davina opened for her.
    There is definitely something in the water in that country. She also appeared on Beste Zangers in 2018 and blew her peers away on that show.

    Absolutely fantastic musicianship, especially the lead guitar. I agree with Roy Kliffen below, referencing other acts like Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Earth, Wind & Fire. But I don't see much of a demand for this style of music these days --- so the low number of views of this episode is solely due to the genre of music you presented, and not to your informed commentary. The only question I would have asked is whether, with your radio experience, you see any avenues for future commercial success for this type of music? I would be pessimistic.
    As for any plugs, maybe another one for the opposite end of the spectrum: HARD ROCK, and Alissa White-Gluz "Under Black Flags We March", and whether you would plug it into your radio mix? czcams.com/video/Yw2W94PvYgQ/video.html ? Have a great day !!

    • @TheWyldesidewithEricClark
      @TheWyldesidewithEricClark  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks for the comment! And some episodes will hit, some won't! As to your question regarding radio play for this style/format: I think in a small, specialty role this would work. If you had a special weekend show that programmed "out of the box but still in the format", you could strategically get this to fit. I don't think you were asking if a radio station could be successful playing tributes/covers, but I'll answer that anyway, No, would be my opinion. That's one of those "Sounds great in the meeting, but..." situations where the theory and application are too far apart to execute. Listener fatigue would be the biggest part of that failure. But again, you could do a Special Weekend, like an "Under the Covers Weekend" where once an hour you play a cover/tribute plus a sounder and give away sheets or pillows or something like that. If you are creative and have freedom and know some basic music research analytics, you can make just about anything work. Sorry to drone on, hope that helps.
      Cheers!
      Eric

    I'm not going to say L&F are better than Chicago. Chicago originated these songs & performances. L&F has only copied them. But I WILL say that I prefer L&F versions of basically every song they've done, over the originals. They're just so well done, & of course the sound quality is 10 times better. That's not Chicago's fault, but it's a fact. I love L&F. I'm so glad I found them.

  • @bartonbagnes4605
    @bartonbagnes4605 Před 2 lety

    Great performance. I'm a little confused. I could have sworn you gave the opposite classification for which is a cover and which is a tribute. I had always thought them interchangeable until you classified them, and then I started using your classification, or so I thought.

  • @rgoers
    @rgoers Před rokem +1

    So you've reacted to the best tribute band on CZcams. So why haven't you reacted to either of the two best cover bands on CZcams - Foxes and Fossils or Lexington Lab Band? LLB does a couple of Chicago songs almost as well as Leonid and Friends. In fact, I would argue that one of them would be better - Hard Habit to Break. L& F hasn't covered it but I don't believe they have anyone who could sing Bill Champlin's part as well as LLB does it. As for Foxes and Fossils, some of their stuff is amazing considering where they were singing and that the girls were still in high school when they started. The stuff they have been doing the last few years has been pretty darn good too. They are finally doing a couple of live shows in Dec 2022 and although I can't make it to Atlanta for them, I am hoping I will get to hear the recording as their live stuff was truly the best.
