Well, if you're new into female harsh vocals, you're in for a real surprise. Spiritbox, Jinjer, Arch Enemy, Ad Infinitum, Infected Rain, Dogma, Harper, Butcher Babies, etc, etc, etc.. They're out there, and they're fantastic. a whole new rabbit hole for you to fall into.
Take a look at Jinjer, either Pisces or Judgment and Punishment (one take vocal) to really get your ears laid back.

They did a Liquid Metal live/recorded studio concert during lockdown.. its got alot of their older stuff and its a 3 part video (8-12min each) The produced album songs are amazing but the raw vocals and riffs make in even better.
Always love watching your videos! Courtney does the unclean vocals herself without any sort of computer programs! It’s always a treat listening to Spiritbox because Courtney’s clean vs unclean vocals are very different from each other. I’d recommend Bad Omens Artificial Suicide as another example of clean vs unclean vocals being completely different. Noah Sebastian’s clean vocals have pop and rnb sensibilities so his screams are always a fantastic contrast to his clean vocals. Much love! ❤

The EP that this song is from gives a pretty good mix of what the band is all about. Angel Eyes and Cellar Door are both punishingly heavy, Jaded is a mix of both singing and harsh vocals, while Too Late/Too Close, The Void and Ultraviolet showcase her singing exclusively. Ultraviolet could straight up be a pop song.
Spiritbox is the brainchild of Courtney (vocals) and her husband Mike (guitars/composing) and they launched the band a few years after quitting a band they were both in (called Iwrestledabearonce), but were treated like hired guns. They both gave two weeks notice in the middle of the tour, and the band broke up.
Both have been doing music for a very long time. Mike was in a band called Fall In Archaea that toured 9-10 months of the year, while Courtney played in a band with her brother called Unicron that did a few tours, but were mostly not focused on trying to make music a career.
I just dont understand, why people in general have so much difficult to understand that female can do growl, it is a singing technique as every other singing. If I go on that point of*it is hard to believe*, then why is it easy to believe that male singers can go very high or do opera?.
Jaded was the 2nd song off the EP 'The Fear of Fear'. Each song transitions into the next one but in saying that, you'll fall in love with the video for Ultraviolet, it's really pretty

The last video I posted to my channel is for people who doubt Courtney can do cleans to screams live. Or even live live. Not only can she do it, but it may actually sound better than the studio versions of her vocals.
The harsh vocals you are hearing as her "screaming" is a technique using your false vocal folds. If you master it, then it doesn't hurt your voice and you can switch back and forth pretty effortlessly.

Not computer generated. She is engaging her false vocal chords along with her main vocal chords. The false chords create that distorted sound. I highly recommend the "circle with me" single take. It will really show you her versatillity.
For more mix between harsh and clean vocals, check out their songs Circle With Me (one take), Blessed Be, Rule of Nines, etc. She doesn't scream on every song, if you just want to hear her clean singing voice check out Secret Garden, Ultraviolet, or Too Close/Too Late. If you want to hear her reproduce it live, there are some really good Sirius XM performances from during the Pandemic that are really nice you can hear some of their older songs live. She crushes it live.

Death growls are naturally produced using your false vocal chords, leaving your regular chords unharmed. I've naturally produced them since I first listened to slipknot back in 2000. For reference, I was 13. You should watch the video where Will Ramos from Lorna Shore was on The Charismatic Voice's channel teaching Liz to death growl, and she was able to do it comfortably in under a day. Just saying, if you're going to be a nay saying, at least watch this to understand. Have a metal day \m/
You should definitely react to the 3 part Liquid Metal performance they did at the end of 2020 where they perform 6 songs. Courtney's vocals are amazing. You would probably love their performance of all 3 Mara Effect songs live too.

The technical term you're looking for is "vocal distortion" when talking about her growls/screams, and yes, that really is her with minimal computer interference. Mostly layering of several takes of her screaming/using vocal distortion. Check out "Circle With Me" Live one take vocal performance and you'll see her do it live.
There is no computer thing to her voice. Unlike Demi Lovato who uses autotune Spiritbox Courtny is the real thing and it's her voice. Watch local couches about her.
Love this band! Fun fact, Josh Gilbert (Bald dude with neck tattoos in video) Can sing! and does backing vocals on this album!
Don't forget about Jinjer, ladies! These are the two best bands with female harsh singers, because both Courtney and Tatiana have amazing diva clean voices--and harsh vocals that will eat your soul! Yeah, it's usually dudes who do this kind of thing. I never liked it until I heard Tatiana from Jinjer doing it. There's something empowering about a woman roaring out her frustrations with undeniable power, don't you think? Like don't fuck with Courtney, or she'll melt your face!

Women doing gutteral metal vocals has been around for quiet a while now (I first heard Angela Gosslow from Arch Enemy in 2003).. But I think the difference in the past decade is the production of music videos and the inspiration those early metal vocalists had on women in metal today. Women in metal certainly used to be a rare thing, but these days its quiet common place.. Japan has an whole industry of all female metal bands.. It's great to see.

Courtney is just an excellent vocalist. There are other females capable of this vocal duality. Tatiana from Jinjer, Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Melissa Bonny (Ad Infinitum) are the ones that immediately come to mind. But there are many more, some less well known like Ellie Berlin. On the Male side, Vocalists that can switch between harsh and clean vocals instantly, there are probably hundreds to thousands.

Definitely need to check out Alissa White Gluz of Arch Enemy and Melissa Bonny of Ad Infinitum. Checkout Handshake with Hell for Alissa and I am the Storm or Melissa. Melissa also did a metal cover of Jenny of Oldstones from Game of Thrones with her side project ,Dark Side of the Moon. For something really fun checkout Harper. She is an 11 year old from England who's cover of Spiritbox's Holy Roller at 9 years old went viral on YT. She performed the same song for her audition on America's Got Talent and also performed live with Courtney and Spiritbox in 2022. @@jsavage71 I used to be like that, because I do not understand rap. However I realize now that it's not that rap is bad, it's just that I don't feel it. While to me is just talking in rhythm, others seem to enjoy it, so now I realize the problem is in my end. I just lack some receptor for it. I didn't understand screaming either until I heard Alissa White-Gluz. That did the trick. Which is why I put a recommendation to the end: NITA STRAUSS - The Wolf You Feed ft. Alissa White-Gluz.
