Does this hot rail hold it's own against the traditional humbucker?
I think it does and this particular pickup has a great thick sound, plenty of attack and sustain for days.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks for watching!
FINALLY ! A simple a straightforward demonstration for metal, between a hotrails pickup and a mildly hot humbucker. You nailed it. I just hate the extra fluff thrown in to other videos. You got to the point, gave me a few different chords and palm mutes to help me understand the tone, and we're done...
Thank you.
Well said mate, we could all agree that if every guitar tone video was like this...well it wouldn't solve all world's problems but it would set us in the right path
they both do the same job. the difference is so minute that either one is equally fine for the same application. pretty cool comparison that sheds light on the fact that hot rails really are true humbuckers
you meant it shreds light🤘😁
No, the hot rails have a unique fatness and clarity to it
There is a definite difference and I think the rail pickup sounds better for metal.

Hot rails. As much a game changer as the stratocaster was.
like the wheel
or maybe fire
I LOVE these metal riffs. This is such great sounding metal.
Guy sees Tele: Oh so you play country?
Resignton starts playing the riff in this video.
😵😵😵
Amazing sound on that hot rail!
I've been scrolling through videos after searching "hot rails telecaster" hoping to find this exact type of demo. I'm looking to play various types of metal so that's exactly what I want to hear, and having it directly compared to a LP is amazing. It just confirms that a tele (my favorite guitar) paired with a Hot Rails is the right combo for me, and you don't lose anything. The tone is exactly what you'd hope.
I love this, we all see the tele and assume terrible things are about to happen, but no, just sweet soul soothing metal
I put a hot rail in the bridge position of my Tele years ago. I later added a standard humbucker to the neck position but just the rail was good enough to play hard rock/metal with. It's much easier to do than with a Tele than with a Strat unless you're using an HHS setup because then you have to either use a hammer and chisel or a router and carve out the pickup cavities to fit a humbucker.
Nice riffing. That's exactly the style I need to hear when comparing these pickups lol
Surprisingly they're not too far in between when it comes to tone. The humbucker just sounded "wider" and crunchier to me.
Everything about this video was awesome.. The riffs, the comparison, the narration everything!
this may have ended my painful search for a HSS strat...
That hot rail had some punch.
OMG 1:45 that tone is to die for!
Right outta the 90s
Is anybody gonna point out he played metal on a tele with hot rails. That’s like 2 things that should not happen to a tele.
yea hes such a fuckin pervert
I know, that's such a lucky Tele
We want chug on a tele...yeah
@@torahwarrior2442 That's it, I'm putting that on a t-shirt. because a Tele deserves Metal too.
Tell that to Jim Root. A tele is heavy enough for slipknot lol
Cleanest distortion demo on CZcams. Subscribed just coz of the outstanding quality of this video.
Love the second part of your riff. Awesome stuff
Shows u can get a hot rail to sound huge
Yes, also Pete Cotrell makes videos like this and Darell Braun. Man, in a mix it almost seems negligible what humbuckers you use. Scary, what we think we hear when we are in front of our amps and what is audible in the mix. Totally different worlds. Great video again from resington.
Tele uses 250K pots, LP uses 500K pots. Makes a huge difference. Now if the Tele pots were 500K, this would be a better comparison because the rail humbucker is going to sound best at 500K.
Very true!
I have a tele with humbuckers. Would it sound better if I changed the pots to 500s if they are in fact 250s? It is a MIM if that matters.
@@thomastucker5686 humbuckers work best with 500, single coils with 250.
@@MrBostechman I wonder if Fender knows that and used 500k pots on my HH tele? I am glad you pointed me in the right direction so if I changed to rails on my strat, I would also need to change the volume pot. I wouldn't have necessarily thought of that. Thank you.
The most noticeable difference to me is the noise, regular humbucker sounds so clean in the palm muted note like the noise is not canceled enough by the noise gate or whatever it is and overall humbucker is cleaner (less dirty, if that makes sense), but Hot Rail is great in its own way and sounds very similar to the regular humbucker
Finally someone playing metal with taste that doesn't suck like most of the metal demos I hear on youtube. It's often embarassing but this guy has tone and taste. Remember those
d
This channel is great. For most gear, most channels demos in clean tone and such. Nothing wrong with it but I play metal! 😂 Before I buy something, I like to know it can work well for heavy metal because it's most all I play. Excellent channel, great playing, just subscribed.
Cheers dude much appreciated!
Thrash will never die. It’s guys like us. Sir Dave has nothing to worry about. Very riffs
I love to see the GoPro reflex on your metal plate. Sick tones, you totally made that tele growl
The tone is all in the gopro. Thanks dude!
@@resington 😂😂
There’s definitely a lower level being output in the low end, prob just a product of the width of the PU being smaller. Nothing that can’t be fixed by turning up bass by a notch or two on amp though! Picking one up soon!
Tuned in to see what the hotrail pick ups were like and the next thing I know is me and my cat slam-pitting around the house........ Top song ;D
Haha I test all my tunes on my cat. Thanks!
@@resington I can imagine your cat sat in a room like Simon Cowell but instead of a button its a thumbs up or down like in a Roman Gladiatorial Arena.
But with tunes this good it's always a thumbs up and the Gladiators must mosh until there's no-one left alive..... A most Honorable Death
Exactly how i would have a tele
Having watched this I ordered an Artec for my Sunn Mustang (a Strat thing) -severely fun
See the difference is - single size humbuker is all thrown the metallic tone gud - but full size humbuker has more space to generate the warmness in them - but the difference is minute 🤘🔥
Forget about pickups, what you need is a resington
Thank you for actually giving a recommendation instead of the typical "it was good" that you get from other videos :)
Cheers dude!
Saves me routing my strat out and having basically and almost useless pickup in the bridge if I don't, cheers :)
they are nearly identical to me, though the humbucker sounds a bit more full in the lower end just a hair, and the hotrail sounds the opposite, fuller in the higher end
Probably related to the wood and body of the guitar no?
@@danielguinea2971It could. I do know that certain woods can affect a guitar's tone. Still, the difference between the hot rail and the PAF in this video seemed minute to my ear.
Hot Rail Telecaster with floyd rose is gonna be my personal custom.
a reg HSS strat gives pos'n 4 Fender hum cancelling and pos'n 1 bridge PAF humbucking
- what it doesn't give you is the angled pickup Fender sound - the angled hot rail gives a mellower Fender tone and kills the hum - - a no quack tone in pos'n 1 and a decent quack tone in pos'n 2
- ideal in Tele Customs at bridge with a Fender Wide Range at neck
I wanna see a 51' lefty Tele' with a hotrails pickup installed, and played by Tony Iommi through his wall of amps!
Yes! Make it happen haha thanks for watchin.
Nice Kreator type demo - hot rails telecaster is outstanding!! 💥
Id use the hot rails to play leads and humbuckers for rhythms
Good straightforwards demo with no BS. And answers a question for many of us. But nhere's an angle to test out: Strats, teles and Suoerstrat types all tend to be longer scale, which I believe due to string tension and or other factors creates a bright tone (see maple fretboard, steel bridge/nut etc). On the other hand, single cut maple caps like Les Pauls, and I shouldn't share good secrets but Vintage V100s have 24" inch scales that are darker. So the next question is, how would a stacker humbucker sound on a Gibbo? Would it give us that midground P90 with more gusto, yet brighter? Well, superstrat HSS H/whatever do sound bright... I was going to fit stacked buckers to either my Strat or G&L, but am not so inclined now as I prefer the dark of short scale. Then I fancied a short scale Fender...ah, I should go search that concept as it may make this nonsense:)
If I can ask, did you connect to the Hi Z input on your audio interface, or through a DI Box to the interface? Really great tones from both guitars.
0:01 vs 0:38 or the chug 0:06 vs 0:43 and then again at 1:44 and 1:54
They sound 99% the same. I'll take a $12.99 eBay hotrail.
You should make a tutorial on how you got this tone! Its awesome
Great work, mate
To the point, helpful, and nice playing, thanks!
Cool test, both rock! 🤘🤘🤘
However, I think without the overdrive booosting the mids and (more importantly) cutting the lows the humbucker would be boomier. Unless you adjust the polar pieces under the wound strings, at least that's my experience.
So people really don't know Dave Murray from Iron Maiden uses Hot Rails on his Strats???
The hot rails were clearer
Great review/comparison 👍
Dude, you SHRED!
I do my best!
I preferred the Wilkinsons, they sounded "more metal" ie. the classic thrash sound. The hot rails was similar, but hotter, which in this case made them slightly harsher than the regular hummies.
How did i never heard about this pickups holy crap
Just change it on my strat from single coil tu hsh houtrails, perfection
Awesome tone in both.
Tasty tone bro! Hot rails are underrated!
I have one of my strat as well.
Super cool Thanks So much !!!
Yep I'm getting these for my tele :)
Great riffing!
I like how the hot rail sounded more defined/focused. I wonder how stacked HBs aka "noiseless single coils" would compare.
that hotrail is great wow!
I put a DiMarzio rail pickup in my Tele bridge position about 19 years ago and it still screams. I later put a regular full-size humbucker in the neck position (easier to do with a Tele since the neck position pickup screws into the pickguard and you don't have to go all EVH on the body to carve out a humbucker cavity). Even with just the rail pickup in the bridge position, though, it still sounded great for hard rock/metal. I'm thinking about getting a set of rails for my Strat to turn it into a metal guitar. Dave Murray uses rails in his Strats.
Which DiMarzio did you add? I am thinking of doing something very similar to one of my teles
@danielpridgen6862 I believe the model was called the Fastback. It was definitely designed to fit into a standard Tele bridge. I'm not sure DiMarzio even makes that particular pickup anymore but I do know that you can still get rail pickups for a Tele. I put an aftermarket pickup called the Hexbucker (manufactured by a company called GuitarHeads) into the neck position. I would definitely recommend GuitarHeada pickups if you're looking to switch pickups. They make good pickups at a price that won't break the bank.
Great playing but theres a lot of audio tearing sounds for me
Honestly I have the Wilkinson WVS 60s style pick-ups on a 2020 Vintage Icon V6 and a Vintage V75 25th anniversary Tele and they are amazing. On the strat the tone 2 is for the bridge so I just roll off the tone and run it.bsounds amazing. I do want to put a Oripure Single rail humbucker in the bridge. I was going to buy the Wilkinson one, but it's only ceramic and only 16k or 7.2k. honestly, most of the time distortion sounds better on not a crazy output pickup. I'm probably going to get the 13k-14k rail.
I was going to get a lil 59 but I think you got me on a hot rail trip 😆
Preferred the hot rail; there's a tad too much wool on the humbucker for my taste.
I can tell a difference but I like them both Mx
this reminds me a lot of a band called havok
Different scales lengths. Apples to oranges.
True. The tele is only ever so slightly brighter all in all.
what are the lenghts from les paul and tele? And why this matter on sound?
Hi! Did you change the Telecaster pots to 500k or did you leave the 250k pots in? I'm thinking of getting this Artec Hot-rails pickup!
Left the 250ks in. Works great.
resington Thanks mate!
What gauge of strings did you use bro? Both of them sounds amazing
Thanks dude! These are 10 to 46 totally average Ernie balls. I use other guages for lower tunings on other guitars.
Awesome
I’m installing this very soon, just waiting for it to arrive! Did you have to cut the pickup hole in the Tele bridge to fit the Artec in?
No man it fit right in no probs.
@@resington Great! I have a Classic Vibe 50s but I imagine the dimensions of the bridgeplate are standard across the spectrum, so it should be the same for me! Cheers mate!
@@resington Although I just noticed you're not using the original Affinity bridgeplate!
@@garrettendi its not an affinity. It looks like one though. It's a Benson. Super cheap off ebay. And I replaced the neck too.
@@resington Ah right lol! Well it sounds great. Hopefully mine will be as trouble-free
killer riffs!
Scale length on these guitars is different as well. That will affect tone.
There are hundreds of variables that change the sound. Body wood. 3 piece or 1, neck components, neck-thru or bolt-on, action etc. You can make anything sound like anything else with modification. Most importantly you can ALWAYS use an equilizer to manipulate what frequency you are shooting for. In the end of the day it's what you are comfortable with.
Nice comparison and chops.
There is some kind of humming noise in the back of the hotrails more noticeable. I guess is the Tele. Is it shielded or are the pots??
It was quite a quiet guitar when I had. Could be the laptop I used to record.
The riff
That was so sick ngl
Good comparison. Could you tell me where I can buy the Artec hot rails? Please. Or a purchase link
Thanks. It's been a while but try ebay.
Great demo, thanks. May I know which brand is the hot rail ? Thanks
Artec, from ebay. Thanks.
@@resington thank you sir
@@resington is it Alnico or ceramic ? :-)
@@brCharlieNagy alnico if I can remember correctly
@@resington thanks a lot
Try a 16k hotrail by Duncan! Single coil size humbuckers sound great. I use them.
dude, that tele is thrashing
I love my hotrail pickup listening from phone the hotrails sounds fatter
I am using dimarzio dp 384, its cool but sound to thin for metal riff, than the real shape humbucker pickups.
Thank you for this vid! I've been looking for vid like yours since i tried the Charvel PRO MOD DK22 SSS and I'm not sure now if i should take a guitar with Fullsized HB or a singlecoil sized one. Maybe you can give me a recomendation? So basicly I play everything but mostly Rock and Hardrock/Metal like Extreme and I'm not sure which one is better for this kind of playstyle. In your Video i realized that there isn't a big differencen between these two so maybe if i take a Singlecoil sized HB and add some Bass from the Amp, will I get like a Fullsized HB sound then?
Thanks maybe you'll answer 😊
Have a great day!
I'll be honest, I scrolled down to the comments and didn't even relize he switched guitars
I'm putting hot rails in my partscaster called the blue beast.
1:24 makes me uncomfortable seeing that the low E string is only overlaping one rail instead of both 😢
True I thought it'd effect the sound but was fine.
The hot rail WON I think
I went for the Warman Twin Hot Rail Humbuckers (14.1kOhms) on my squier bassVI. and now it's a doom monster :-D
Sounds devastating!
metallica riffs!!!!!!
0:25 that riff WOW
Chromatic! Cheers dude!
Do you think if i got a strat with decent paf style humbucker (low output, like all the pafs), using a plugin chain like yours, should i get i nice modern metal sound?
Loved the single hot rail. Is this one same specs as a seymour duncan?
You happen to be a fan of The Haunted?
You remind me of the style of a guitar player named Anders Björler
Some of theie stuff is decent yeah. Thanks.
What pot did you use? Do I need to change my pot to 500k? My telecaster has Single-Bridge/Humbucker-Neck configuration, and the stock pot is 500k for Volume and 250k for Tone. I wonder If I can just exchange my single coils to hot rails without doing messy stuff. Humbucker modification is possible, but meh another messy stuff.
250k, should be fine with that.
I can hear a difference. Hot rail is a little brighter. Paf sounds a litte thicker and more scoopee. Good 80s sound from the hot rails ala rhoads
What is the resistance of that hot rails? And did u change your potentiometer of your telecaster?
Hello, great job. A question, what resistance should my hot rail have to give me that sound?
Hey man you can always shape ur sound with pedal, ur amp and cab whether it's real or a sim. I'd get 10k or more to get that punchier sound but it's not essential.
Thanks
What type of telecaster did you use in this video. Is it a affinity ?
No, it was a 'benson' body with a chinese neck from a guy off ebay, total Frankenstein job.
wow hotrail on tele little bit loud and more powerfull for me.. thank man
My single coil tele sounds better than my strat HSS when overdriven on bridge. Wierd but not as muddy, and still crunchy!
It bothers me that one of the rails doesn't quite reach under that low E string. Wouldn't that result in that string not being picked up as well as the other strings?
It's reasonably but sometimes it can be a little quieter. I'm gonna change this back to a single soon I think.
