DIY Junk Drawer Wind Chimes

  • I made these wind chimes with Earth Day in mind after finding an image of something similar online but not being able to find its source. Cleaned tuna cans were used as the base. For the rest of the wind chimes, I used "junk drawer" items like keys, buttons, hardware, safety pins, broken jewelry, etc. They hang from broken chains as well. I think they're a fun addition to any outdoor area and a great way to upcycle.
    I know the video plays pretty quickly, to see how to make the wrapped loops, here's my video on how to form them: • Jewelry Making Basics ...

      Yes, I think adding the paint is a good idea for many. I live in a humid climate too and mine rusted quickly as well. However, I adore rust and the wabi sabi feel of it so I don't mind at all as that's what I had hoped it would do. It's definitely a personal choice. Thanks for recommending it.

    • @CraftyHope
      @CraftyHope  Před 10 měsíci

      Yeah, sorry for that. The buttons were wire-wrapped. I just used one of the holes on the buttons to insert the wire. Here's a tutorial on how I wire-wrap buttons (czcams.com/video/FWrqG5pc0LA/video.html). I used jump rings to connect the wire wraps to the other componanets. But, if you have large enough jump rings, you could use those just as well. Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions!

    Cute. I would have spray painted or decopauged the can.😅
    So, do they make a pleasant noise?

    • @CraftyHope
      @CraftyHope  Před 10 dny

      Yes, decorating the can is definitely an option and would help keep them from rusting. Since I made these 3+ years ago, they have rusted beautifully, and I love that! As for their sound, it all depends on what you hang on it. The ones I made are not very loud at all, a slight tinkling. But, I love them for their decorative purposes even more.

    It is safer to work from inside of the smaller cans.

    • @CraftyHope
      @CraftyHope  Před 8 měsíci

      I'm not sure what you mean. If you ensure that there are no burrs poking up from where you've opened your can, it should be fairly safe to work in them. But, any smaller can is going to be tougher to "work inside" just because of the smaller opening. I do advise you to always use caution and wear thick gloves if there is any chance you might be injured.

    OMG, Hope, Last night I stumbled upon your assemblage art work and I sent you jusa a short note and I said that loved your thought process and I couldn't wait until this afternoon to look more of your work and boom I found these wind chimes, I had saved a lot of bottle caps I think I have at least 100 of them and an old coffee can but I couldn't think of how to put it all together, and now I get it I also went to see your Jewelry Making vids and I'm going to have a go at it.
    I know why I love your Assemblage work, its because I have so much really cool stuff that I had asked my friends to donate to me so that I could make a Memory Jug and I got so much I didn't know where to start. I used to have so much time to myself, but I really don't any more, Im the primary caretaker for my Husband who has Parkinson disease and I just put every away because I just wasn't inspired any longer. Now I feel like I'm on fire to do assemblage ( I love everything eclectic)ART. Sorry this is so long but i want to tell you a little about myself.

It gives me such joy to give them a new life where they're not lingering in some landfill. Let me know if you have any questions at all, if anything is unclear! I'm always happy to help!

    I have the attention span of a nat, so the fast version, is great for me. It is a pretty much self- explanatory process. And the long drawn out videos are boring and un-interesting. With any hands on experience, someone could clearly keep up. Great job!

    I like the center one with large pendant best. How do the cookie cutter ones work? I have a bunch of cookie cutters, but I'm not going to be baking anymore. I went raw vegan, so those days are over. Lol. I'd love to use them, especially the antique ones for a cool project.😉

      So glad you like this, but I hate that you couldn't see my process better. I have a whole playlist/selection of jewelry-making tutorials for beginners. All or at least most of the techniques I used to wire the pieces together are included in those videos. If you have any specific questions about how I made this, please don't hesitate to let me know.

      Hi! I'm basically making wrapped loops to make the pieces charms/dangles. You can watch my video on making wrapped loops to get a better idea of how to do this. (czcams.com/video/0Q1oDu5SIME/video.html)
      And, if you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

      Hey, I hate that you don't like the speed. But, I chose to do that since the steps were so repetitive. You can slow it down by clicking the little gear-shaped button on the bottom right of the video. It controls the settings and allows you to set a slower speed. Also, if you have ANY questions about my process, I'm quite happy to help. Ask away!

      Yes, I've been told. I've learned my lesson about the speed of this. If you need to view it slower, you can hit the cog button on the video and select a slower speed. And, if you have any questions about the process, please don't hesitate to ask!

      Hi Loretta, unfortunately, I can't do anything about the speed of the video now. But, if you want to slow it yourself, there's a little cog in the bottom right of the video player that you can click and adjust the speed of the video playback for yourself. I've also included a link in the description to my tutorial on making wrapped loops that should help. But, if you still have questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks so much for watching!
