    ======= Screaming Eagles LYRICS =======
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
    Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi’s cast on Bastogne
    Facing their forces alone
    ALONE! [2x]
Sent from the skies jumped into the unknown
The march to Berlin has begun
Spearhead the charge surrounded by foes
    Eagles are leading the way
France is still under enemy rule
    Push, axis retreat
Thrown towards Arnhem a bitter defeat
They’re stretched out just one bridge too far
Turn of the tide, it’s breaking away
    Losing momentum, retreat
Go to Bastogne, the crossroads must hold
    Stand, alone in the cold
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
    Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi’s cast on Bastogne
    Facing their forces alone
    ALONE! [2x]
Dig your own foxholes or dig your own Grave
The storm is about to begin
The siege has begun, there’s nowhere to run
    Panzerkampfwagen emerge
Tanks and mortars are shaking the ground
    Prey of man and machine
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
    Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi’s cast on Bastogne
    Facing their forces alone
Chill of the winter bite to the bone and Christmas is drawing near
Soldiers are freezing, the death toll increasing
    They’re dying in their holes
There’s no surrender there’s no retreat, the Wehrmacht is drawing near
There’s no reinforcements they’re fighting all alone
Sent from the skies ended up in Bastogne
As easy, as hard as they get
    Nazi command request and demand
    Offer surrender - declined
Nuts! The generals word echo clear
    Nuts! The Nazi’s shall hear
    [2x]
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
    Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi’s cast on Bastogne
    Facing their forces alone
    ========= Historic Fact ==========
Men from the US 101st Airborne Division (the Screaming Eagles) were sent to defend Bastogne from approaching Nazi troops. With the town surrounded and cut off from supplies, they fought for seven days in the bitter cold before reinforcements arrived.

This is my wife's YT account.
Thanks for making this song and video!
I served in D Co. 2/502d INF, 101st ABN for 6 years and loved every minute of it! I was a Tank Destroyer and served in the Gulf War as such. When I was assigned to Baumholder, Germany in 2002, the first thing I did was go to Bastogne, Belgium, it's holy ground for us. I walked the perimeter our unit held during the battle and felt the cold they felt. I've been given the order to "defend in place" which is an order no man likes to hear because it means "from this point, no further!".
I talked with some of the original Veterans that fought there and were in my unit, it was like talking to a fellow Soldier, we laughed and felt each other's pain. I then served in Iraq as an Infantry NCO and death is something I pray I never see again. After 26 years on active duty, I retired in 2009. Thanks again.

The reply of “NUTS” when the Americans were asked to surrender is fantastic, but the British response in Arnhem was even better:
*Background: The British force in Operation Marketgarden in the Dutch town of Arnhem is completely surrounded and support is weeks away. They are running low of ammunition, food and are hopelessly outnumbered. A German Officer approaches the British fortifications under flag of truce with an offer.*
German: “The General sees no point in continuing this battle! He is offering you the chance to save your lives! Will you surrender?”

An interesting part of the story that's rarely told is that when the German plenipotentiaries arrived at the 101st's headquarters, General McAuliffe at first thought the Germans wanted to surrender to him. Surrounded or not, he felt like he had the upper hand and was handing their asses to them. When he was told that they were demanding that he surrender, he said "aw, nuts!" and then went out to check on his men. When he got back to HQ, he was told that the Germans were demanding a response. That's when he sent the one-word reply "Nuts!" back to the German general Luttwitz. One of his staff told him that his first reaction had been the best possible response he could send to such an insolent demand.
Luttwitz' commander, Hasso von Manteuffel, chewed out Luttwitz when he found out that he had sent the demand in the first place. He knew the 101st was an elite U.S. unit and wasn't going to surrender just because they got cut off.

    The lyrics
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
    Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi's cast on Bastogne
    Facing their forces alone
    Alone, alone
Sent from the skies jumped into the unknown
The march to Berlin has begun
Spearhead the charge surrounded by foes
    Eagles are leading the way
France is still under enemy rule
    Push, axis retreat
Thrown towards Arnhem a bitter defeat
They're stretched out just one bridge too far
Turn of the tide, it's breaking away
    Losing momentum, retreat
Go to Bastogne, the crossroads must hold
    Stand, alone in the cold
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
    Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi's cast on Bastogne
    Facing their forces alone
    Alone, alone
Dig your own foxholes or dig your own grave
The storm is about to begin
The siege has begun, there's nowhere to run
    Panzerkampfwagen emerge
Tanks and mortars are shaking the ground
    Prey of man and machine
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
    Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi's cast on Bastogne
    Facing their forces alone
Chill of the winter bite to the bone and Christmas is drawing near
Soldiers are freezing, the death toll increasing
    They're dying in their holes
There's no surrender, there's no retreat, the Wehrmacht is drawing near
There's no reinforcements, they're fighting all alone
Sent from the skies ended up in Bastogne
As easy, as hard as they get
    Nazi command request and demand
    Offer surrender, declined
Nuts! The generals word echo clear
    Nuts! The Nazi's shall hear
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
    Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi's cast on Bastogne

I am a grandson of one of the Battered Bastards of Bastogne, and the Old Man had nothing but respect for the souls of the 82nd. Hell, in Normandy, he was a part of a mixed platoon from the 82nd because of how bad the drop was. One of his best friends, was of the 82nd, and, to the day they died, he told the man, if it was not for him, the 101st would not have been formed, and, the Old Man would have died like a dog along with most of the first wave of the 29th from which he volunteered out of. He, was always confused as to why the airborne was abused, used as a common light trooper when they were trained and drilled endlessly to operate out of contact of their support. Even his older brother, a commando (By virtue of his birth of being a dual citizen of England and the US) asked him why they were trained so hard.
Now, for the 82nd, they had it just as bad, if not worse than the 101st in the defence of St. Vito, a town in the region of the Ardennes, with the same mission, hold it at all cost. They held it, and bit back just as hard, alone out numbered and surrounded.

    • @SantiFiore
      @SantiFiore Před 7 lety +41

Questknight12 If I were a Battered Bastard than survived the Ardennes campaign, I'd prefer punch Eisenhower and face a prison sentence rather than receive a medal. How to do such stupid strategy? Yes, it worked, but at expense of many lives of elite soldiers. The Germans were far inferior in resources and manpower, and instead of break the line with several US Divisions, you prefer throwing some companies of paratroopers in the middle of a pair of german divisions. And you can guess, "is a distraction", but it took a month to force the Germans to retreat, and special forces like the 82th and the 101th were exploited in a wrong way.

    • @SantiFiore
      @SantiFiore Před 7 lety +26

Questknight12 I can understand than paratroopers were a new element in warfare tactics, but it doesnt have any sense order any military unit to hold against a entire army more time than the necesary, paratroopers weren't some kind of Supersoldiers. The same applies now, in WWII, and 2000 years ago. If you order a unit to hold against a larger force, allright, but procure to rush and push an assault while the enemy is concentrated on the designated unit, for the love of God, you can't leave them to fight till death, while having superior manpower and resources.

    • @aekaralagonisi
      @aekaralagonisi Před 6 lety +35

It was a solid strategy. Bastogne was a crucial road junction, without which the Wehrmacht's spearheads towards Antwerp couldn't be properly supplied.
As for superior manpower and resources they are factors, not outcomes. Just look at the Eastern Front and see what sacrifice was required for victory.

I know this is an old comment, but I don't appreciate the air of elitism. The 101st and 82nd were far from being the only units to hold back the German salient. In fact those "common light troopers" who apparently "died like dogs" were the reason the 101st was able to reinforce Bastogne before the first panzer could even be heard by the paras. Respect should be had for all participants, Airborne or otherwise.
Also, the 82nd was hardly involved in the defense of St. Vith, let alone held it all by themselves. Their major role was the defense of the bulge's northern shoulder around La Gleize.

What I like about this video is it shows that the 101st wasn't alone in Bastone, but part of the 10th Armored Division was trapped in there. What gets left out is General McAuliffe used the elements of the 10th Armored as his rapid reaction force, and they would shore up and close an breeches in the outline. They were key to hold Bastone. McAuliffe himself didn't call it an Airborne victory he called it a combined arms victory, and made sure the elements, which included several independent artillery battalions, as the part of the 10th Armored Division also got recognized for their defense of Bastone.

Unguided Reaper Sweden had ammunition for about 10 minutes. I think that shows why we didn't want to be involved in the war. All our tanks, planes and canons were also very old. We wold get occupied in under a week, maybe even in a day. Some swedes also Finland during the attack from the red army and Sweden as a country helped the finns with canons, food and other important stuff.

Honestly, I kinda like that scene where the other Germans are trying to help the injured NCO, instead of running past him, it makes the germans actually seem human, a lot of shows/movies/games just portray the Wehrmacht as inhuman fighting machines. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to make the Wehrmacht seem innocent, they still did a shit ton of war crimes, especially in Poland.
