The reason google can only offer 3 years of OS updates on Snap dragon phones is because Qualcomm only offers 3 years of driver updates and support for their chips. Part of the main reason why the Google Designed Tensor Chip gets at least 5 years of support, google gets to say how long it supported.
I didn't know that! Glad Google is moving to a more sustainable model.
I'm not sure if this is the real reason, because the Pixel 5a with exactly the same hardware will be supported for a few months longer.
then how do small projects like graphene, Lineage and the Fairphone Company support up until 7 years of updates without the drivers?

@@sorengeti69graphene clearly tells hardware vulnerabilities can't be fixed with the google pushing fix which they relied on Qualcomm.
Lineage doesn't care about vulnerabilities, they just provide software updates but often with many features are limited due to older hardware.

Love my Pixel 4a. Great design (reparability aside) and a no-tears price if it gets broken or lost, but three years of software support is disappointing. Though once it loses software support I'll just go down the custom rom route. At least Google phones still have unlockable bootloaders unlike Samsungs after the S7.
I'm thinking of getting one to try LineageOS.
I still have my 5+ years old Galaxy Note 8. Works like a charm, no burn-in, still run everyday apps smoothly, a beautiful 1440p screen. My only complaint is the camera and the abysmal battery life.
The problem with modern phone is that their OLED screens are very fragile and prone to burn-in and discoloration. I've seen a lot of Samsung OLED phone screens breaks and have green lines right after the warranty expires, or after software updates. iPhone 13 Pros' 120Hz screens are notorious for breaking after software updates. Depends on your luck, OLEDs screen will just suddenly breaks or develop burn-in and discoloration even if you use it carefully.
Another problem is the hard to replace batteries. Phone batteries will degrade overtime and we often has to replace them after 2 or 3 years. It's such a hassle where I live. I replaced my Note 8 battery and the battery still sucks, even after factory reset.
I currently use an iPhone 13 that I paid WAY TOO MUCH for. If I had waited for like 6 more months, I could have gotten a Pixel 6 for dirt cheap. New phones aren't worth it, unless you have too much money to spare. Just look at the new regular iPhone 14, 800 bucks for essentially an iPhone 13 with 2 more 2Gb of RAM? No thanks.
Phones in recent years are really good and pretty much function the same. Some old flagship Android phones are being sold for really good prices. If I have to buy another phone, a sub $300 old Samsung flagship or iPhone or Pixel will be my choice.
I believe that the reason why your phone lasts so long is because google takes a LOT and I mean A LOT of battery.
You can expect to get more than double the battery life they normally get with MicroG or without google services, or graphene’s sandbox.

I bought a 4a 5g at launch. The battery life is amazing. The battery isn't as good as it used to be obviously. But I can easily get 10+ hours of watching youtube videos and doom scrolling the entire time. If I'm not using it hardcore like that it'll still be at around 50% at the end of the day. But I will be switching to a new ROM soon so it'll be a tad more secure since no more security updates. Hoping that helps with battery life a bit as well.
Cupholders are meant for cups or bottles, not oversized phones.
If you made them too big you would spill your drinks in plastic cups.
Americans have huge soda cups, but they are the exception, no need to make everyone else's experience worse.

@@fitchyyboisame. (6a though. Still to big but that's how it is now. Small screens have been pushed out of the economies of scale zone so now nobody makes "niche" small phones anymore (at least not ones that you'd actually want to use)
The 4a will get 3 more years of grapheneOS software updates past oem eol so it is not dead yet. The 5a has a much better SoC but I'd wait for the 6 to come down in price after the 8 releases as it had near flagship level performance and oem eol is 2026 + 5 more years past that of grapheneOS. Even the 5 is a bit slow compared to the rest. IMO never get a used phone that wasn't a flagship.
I should correct you at the 5a SoC. The SoC of the 5a (which is used in 4a 5G and 5 also) although newer, it is just slightly faster than the SoC on the 4a. The SM7250 (Snapdragon 765G) in 5a, 4a 5G and 5 is just a little bit faster than the SM7150 (Snapdragon 730G) in 4a overall in both CPU and GPU, and efficiency is still the same. That means the 4a will get you roughly the same performance level as the 5a and 4a 5G. The 5 has 8GB of RAM instead of 6GB in the rest of 3 phones so it will be a little bit faster but the 5 has no headphone jack. The 765G does have a single core that can goes up to 2.4GHz so in single core benchmark it is 10% faster than the 730G but in all core the 765G is just slightly the same and in some instances the 730G even beats the 765G
Basically, the 765G is just the 730G with 7nm manufacturing node and 5G modem. (730G uses 8nm node)

There's plenty of horror stories of people with older Apple devices upgrading to new software versions and immediately getting worse performance and bad battery life. They immediately lock you out from reverting upgrades too. That's part of the reason why I stopped liking Apple. They're super restrictive and hostile to your freedom with their software AND hardware -- they've shown to be hostile to locking out parts replaced too. Fuck Apple.

Apple do support their devices for a long time which is undeniably a massive pro over android, though Google and Samsung commiting to 5 years security updates now is an improvement. But be warned, apple's approach to repairability sucks, I had an iphone 7 with a recently broken fingerprint scanner and decided to buy a used iphone 12, the screen had been repaired not via apple and the phone kept flashing up warnings and it disables automatic brightness among other things. This was a final straw among all of apple's other annoyances that I switched to a Pixel 7. Installing apps outside the official app store, easily being able to move photos to my PC are just what make android so much better for me, plus being able to charge my vape with the same cable I charge my phone with
Right... I forgot about a lot of that... I still want to see if its a decent option, at least to share with others. Not often people look at apple from a budget perspective

I had the same issue back with the iphone 7. I changed the screen, and boom, apple pay would freeze up after every use. Apple really are unbelievable.

Is it possible to use banking apps on graphine?
4a owner here. The camera app is way better on normal android, and while the privacy might not be the best, the os is so much better, especially with android 13. However, the phone is getting slower now because of that underpowered chip, and I can notice quite a lot of stuttering. It will actually get security updates for another 2 years, and I think further os updates would only slow the phone down even more.
Where did you hear that? Everything I've seen says it stopped getting updates of any kind as of November 2023. It did receive a surprise update early this year. But I don't think we'll get anything else here on out including security updates.
But I'd love to be wrong.
You can flash the custom rom /EOS if you want more update on a pixel 4a. And more privacy as well
I'm the only 21 year old in America that uses a flip phone, they last forever, they all have incredible battery life, only having to charge it like once a week, they won't make me become addicted to constant internet use, and using tracfone I get 60 minutes and 3 months of service for $20 with no contract, and as someone who doesn't gab, I only really use half of it, so the time carries over for when my dad calls and won't shut up.

Im on the pixel 8 now and love it upgraded from the 6a,but i would love the 4xl to have as a second phone.i was a die hard Samsung fan but i love the Google echo system and thst they are supporting their phones for 7 years.

To me the whole point of using android phones has always been the mix of price and long term usability/maintainance, as well as features like SD card support and (for some reason) headphone jacks.
Today it's difficult to find a decent phone that does all these things right, in fact it's impossible to find a new phone that does these things right. The closest I've found is the Samsung Galaxy A20e, the main issue with it is a lack of official LineageOS support, however if you're willing to put up with a lot of jank you could just install a generic system image, though I've found that combining that with rooting (for the sake of manual de-googling) was practically impossible.
I would say though that the Fairphone 4 looks pretty good, but sadly is way bigger than I'd like a phone to be, lacks a headphone jack and is too expensive.
All I want from a phone is a Samsung Galaxy S5 with better specs, good custom rom support and maybe a slightly better screen-to-body ratio at around $200.
I hate the phone industry with a buring passion.
It's expensive but the Zenfone 9 does meet every single demand and then some, and in a form factor that I don't hate(5.9 inches)
@@victorkreig6089 The Zenfone lacks SD card support, but I suppose I could live without it and much like all modern phones it's glued together.
The only thing it has over most other phones is a headphone jack and a not-insane size.
@@giserson2 while SD cards are great you don't technically NEED one. I personally love them however have now become burned ever since my 128gb SanDisk Extreme that I've had since 2017 decided to out of nowhere become corrupted on me. Transferring the info you'd generally have on an SD isn't too hard honestly either, just make a backup folder on your computer with all the same stuff and update it every month or so with new stuff you've put on the SD that way something happens you always have all that stuff still

Im still using a 4a as my daily driver. I bought a new Motorola phone but I hate it, and keep coming back to this smöll boï. I've never had any problems with the fingerprint sensor. Works every time.
I think the pixel takes pretty decent photos

Battery lasts so long because Graphene doesn't have anything running in the background
One of the worst things about android and IOS is that they have tons of programs running in the background at all times no matter what you do(lot of telemetry crap)
You can turn most of it off in the settings.

I bought a motorola one action for 80 dollars recently and I absolutely love it, I put /e/os on it which is a privacy focused custom rom and it is wonderful. I have 128gb of storage plus microsd expansion and a headphone jack and 2 or 3 day battery life. Motorola is the best phone company out right now and still has the headphone jack and microsd card on their devices. I would look into motorola before I buy the pixel as their devices are much more consumer friendly and have good specs and are pretty well built and last a while. I love motorolas phones a lot and I don't fanboy over companies but I really like the stuff they put out compared to everyone else

@@aChairLeg I have 4gb of ram and an 8 core processor, its standard 1080p lcd but you'll never have burn in and it looks great, would highly recommend Motorola as they've been the only phone maker i've never had problems with and actually liked the phone

I remember my first experience with a Pixel was a Pixel 3, it might have been an XL but im not sure as i bought it for someone else to replace his broken note 9, i loved everything about it to the point i bought a pixel 6 and i am considering getting a 7 or an 8, the only downside is lack of an SD card slot as i am a digital pack rat.
Did the same thing when I purchased a good condition secondhand Samsung S10e with Snapdragon. Flagship of yesteryear but, still works fine and it's very compact. Could've gotten a secondhand Pixel too but sadly, there isn't any physical support from where I'm from so I settled for Samsung.
OnePlus 6T with Lineage OS is pretty good for $100.
Pixel 6a also has 5 years support, right now it has 4 years remaining, more than enough for me, I'm considering buying one soon

@@avim4896 When the phone stops getting security updates it means it is vulnerable to new exploits. You can argue that it might not be so important, but most people aren't comfortable using insecure device. I would prefer to change an old device for a new one after a few years for a few reasons, new features and hardware, general experience and security
@@dasdadasdasd4917 Correct me if I'm wrong, but even after the phone stops getting security updates all the essential apps that we use still gets updates, so technically it should be secure right, Plus we can scan the phone with antivirus software through our PC which keeps its secure.
There's still ways to find a backdoor in an OS that doesn't have the latest security patches. And if you use banking apps that'll be a prime target. @@avim4896
why not go for 6a like me? we don't want fancy stuff with glass back and it will have longer update cycle left than 6 and 6 pro and not expensive like 7 and 7 pro
I loved my 4a. Agree on the perfect phone stance and would have run it for much longer but the battery life just tanked and replacing it wouldn't be cost effective 😢

@@kouhaiii3182 main reason? It's the same size as every other 6" phablet now. 4a was perfect size and literally nobody makes phones that small anymore. Also the fingerprint sensor on the front doesn't work anywhere near as well as the rear one on the 4a. Apart from that, it's fine (just fine though)
you should give the fairphone a look. repairable, long software updates, supports multiple OS. or just go back to a nokia. like i did.

Just moved from my 5 year old tank the Nokia 6.1 to a Pixel6a. I must say that it addressed most of the problems that I faced with the Nokia. The call quality was excellent simply loud and clear in the earpiece, Great 2 day battery life, extremely fast with no lags and a fantastic camera that's on par or sometime better than the pixel 7 series. I'm hoping to use this phone for more than 5 years or till it is broken to the point of no repair. Plus what a coincidence, there is another youtube channel called sportztourer next to your video, who reviews motorbikes and does the same kind of camera angles and voice narratives like you do in your videos.
I just got the 6a and it's definitely an upgrade over my old 3a (which, honestly, was still a decent phone) except for the fingerprint sensor. The sensor on my 3a worked pretty well, but the one on the 6a is practically useless. It'll work after you set just set up a finger but after that never works, no matter how many times I enter my finger. I dunno if it's because I have a tempered glass screen protector but it's probably the only downgrade from the 3a.
My 6.1 died due to the charge port getting fubar'd, I am slowly sifting through Indian OEM parts to get replacements for pretty much the entire phone except the motherboard and camera. I WILL resurrect my 6.1 it is the best phone ever made
@@kutter_ttl6786 I used to have the fingerprint issue in my pixel6a initially when I bought it. But overtime through constant updates the issue is resolved. The accuracy is now about 95%.
@@victorkreig6089 Didnt know the 6.1 had the charging port issue, I thought it was common only in the 7plus which was released alongside it. My 6.1 had no charging port issues till date. My only major complaint about the 6.1 was the earpiece sound was a bit low and not loud enough during calls.
I love the stability on apple phones and the fool proof approach (That works for most people), but I really want a small phone that is not the SE. Going with the Pixel 5 since it's cheap now and i can try android in a "safe way".
You can still use a phone after it is officially supported. It is not like it is going to just spontaneously brick itself. I am using a Samsung tablet from 2015 and for most basic tasks it works just fine. I also have (but do not really use) an iPhone from 2016 and it definitely works just fine. It doesn't run on the latest version of the OS but it is perferctly usable. However I typically upgrade about every 2-3 years.
I finally just got rid of my Pixel 4a and purchased a Galaxy S23+. The 4a was a very good phone that was well balanced in all areas. Fingerprint reader is outstanding with the stock OS. Maybe graphene just doesn't work well with it?
Might just be my fingers, tried it on stock android and got similar results
I like Samsung, but Google is more for the Western market whereas you can tell that Samsungs newest OS updates were made with the Korean market in mind.

I think you should try out the LineageOS which right now still supports the 4a (heck LineageOS still supports the 2 and 2XL) which the 4a is on LineageOS 21 (which is based on Android 14)
I know its not the kind of thing everyone is willing to do just to gettheir phone running, but had you considered lineage OS? Still getting security updates pretty much every two weeks thanks to a great community support

i bought a used one for my friend who had a failing and old samsung budget phone. it still runs really well to this day on its stock software.
Apple is actually horrible long term. I have an iPad 3 from 2012 that is in full working order except it has no apps availabe anymore and that has been the case since 2018. The moment your phone is a software version behind, all apps start to pull support.
I have this phone and I have been really happy with it. It died on me recently and will not charge I took it to repair shops and they wanted like $95 to do it but that's literally the cost of the phone; so I did it myself and replaced the port. It still does not work and i don't know what to do so I guess I am going to get the 7 now. I wish I could keep it because I really liked it overall
The reason for the disassembly requirements is it makes the case of the phone much more durable all in all and its much easier to waterproof, also as someone who has repaired quite a few iphones, lifting the screen to get in it like that isnt too hard
you can achieve "waterproof"-ing even without glue. Louis Rossmann did a video debunking that misconception
I know this video is 5 months old and new phones are REALLY expensive but the Pixel 8 is supposed to have 7 years of updates, so could be a good deal in a year or so. Speaking of long term support, I am still using an IPhone XR and will probably wait another year before I upgrade. The only thing about Apple is just their anti repair stance especially on older phones. The glass of my screen has a crack, to repair that at a certified shop (so face id works afterwards) it would cost me 280€ which is way too much for a phone I won’t use in a year or two
First and foremost, new subcriber here! After wathcing that Ugreen NAS review you posted and now this, I find your content to be very unique and quite refreshing in the midst of reviewers basically just describing the spec sheet of the product.
I would also like to ask you found Graphene OS to not hinder much in terms of convenience after 10 months since this video was posted? Do you find privacy and security to be much more of an upgrade coming from a Samsung device? I was planning on getting a Pixel but it isn't available at my country so I have to go to resellers to get one. Samsung however is easily purchasable right of the bat.

I didn't end up using the 4a because I got a pixel 6 to start using, but the pixel 6 broke. Back to Samsung now. Either way, Graphene is still worth it for me, and I 100% intend to switch back to it sometime soon.

I feel the end of life-ing of a perfectly good phone. There was a phone I wanted, the Unihertz Titan, but it stopped getting updates in March.
And you know what? I still bought it and I'm running Android 10. Yes, security and malware are always going to be a concern, but I use my device as a communicator, not an entertainment device. That means limited apps installed and I'm not doing random crap on the internet.
As long as my apps continue to receive security updates, I'll continue to use this phone. Not to mention, it's super repairable with Unihertz posting how to replace the battery on their site and I had to get a case to protect whatever gets hit with this thing (it's an absolute chonker and I love it!)
That's very fair, but I personally am big on security and privacy, and am willing to pay the price. Just a shame there's a price.
@@aChairLeg I can relate, it's why I run Linux (after Microsoft stopped supporting my perfectly good hardware) but the raw security is only part of the puzzle. Most of security comes from identifying flaws in human behavior and protecting against them. Since my phone never has vital personal information on it, I'm OK not having the latest OS security.

your best bet would be getting the latest google pixel 8 series. If you trust google with their promise of 7 years OS upgrades that is, which would be a first in the Tech space, even when compared to IPhones !!!!
I would however, take this with a pinch of salt, since google doesn't exactly have a clean track record of following up on their promises.. or services for that matter

Graphene says they're keeping support temporarily on their website so people have time to switch over IIRC
Your experiance with the 3a is vastly different then mine, never had any issues with the fingerprint scanner, battery life is still solid after 4 years (still getting through the day on a single charge) and honestly I'm dreading the day I'll have to replace it. But I may have just gotten a golden sample or you a lemmon ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The battery and overheating problems happened to about 50% of people in the company, but most people didn't have as bad of an experience as me otherwise. It's very possible I got a dud
I recently replaced the battery in my old iPhone 6S Plus. It was a stupid hassle. The good news is that Apple supported that phone for a long time.
They supported it for a really long time! I don't remember there being too much hassle besides tiny screws, but I could have just done enough of them to be used to it

You should try looking into buying chinese phones, specifically xiaomi phones.
Now am not from the US so am not sure how good is the availability there, but buying old flagship mi series phones or the redmi note series phones is something you should look into
You could buy one cheap, flash a custom rom over it and just enjoy stock android on a phone that has actual good hardware for decent price.
I had expensive phone before like Samsung Notes, I still used it to take pictures and other use. I know have a "Samsung Galaxy A14 5G" $199. With google Fi, and the phone is free. Really great phone. Don't need expensive phone. Take great picture. and free beat everything,
just broke my Note 20 Ultra and looking into the sub $100 phones too (used) ...rich people's problems hahaha...but wth is going on with used Note 20 Ultras..all used ones are over 300..makes no sense to me
The used phone market is strange... Pixel 3a's going for just under the 4a. Then pixel 6 for just 150-200? Very odd, but I'd try to stretch for a pixel 6 due to the long(er) support. Can't speak much on Samsung unfortunately, they just have too many phones haha.

Personally the I hate the a52's under the screen fingerprint reader, it's slow and most of the time it just doesn't recognize my finger, however since switching to a phone where the power button is a fingerprint sensor I've had 0 issues - it recognizes my finger all the time, it's fast, the placement is perfect and I can find it easily even if blindly grabbing my phone. Maybe the pixel just has a trash sensor, cause so far I've generally got the feeling that physical non-underscreen sensors work much better
My lg g6 had a much better fingerprint scanner than the 4a. I don't mind where its at as long as it works

i think that for that money the safer bet would be getting an iphone se 2020. They go for not much more and are going to get way longer support from apple (it has the same Soc as the iphone 11 and the hardware of an iphone 8).

My oppo a5 2020 was a pain for fingerprint as it was a behind one almost 60 to 70 percent of the time it unlocks and thats why I used face unlock with it which was good and bad. Fingerprint is a bit more secure but not fast. Face unlock very fast but less secure which made my friend open my phone easy. Now using a a53 5g it is 100% better the fingerprint is better in display that works fast and reliable 90% of the time or even 99% of the time.
I wonder if grapheneos has the same security issue that other roms have with netflix and other streaming apps.

If you think the 4a is small... go ahead and try an iPhone SE... Every time I get handed one of these I find them almost unusable nowadays. Do you remenber the time when phones actually could not be small enough?
They're useable for very basic tasks, but if you want to read the news or go on websites those phones are unusable. I've got an iPhone 14 which is basically the same size as my Pixel 4a was and I think that's the right balance of form factor. I'd never buy a plus size phone, too big for my jean pockets.

Still using my pixel 4a I got back when it was first released.
I used an iPhone 6 until 2021… it was painfully slow, died fast, but I had a lifeproof case and was ahead of the game with showering with my phone 😂
Honestly once you are used to it, it’s not the worst, granted I have a 13pro due to family getting me a sweet deal.
Hot take: we should avoid smart phones, I’d like to see your take on this challenge. Check out what Chris Titus did for that, seems to be a hard to start yet rewarding way to go, not to mention cost effective.
I use my phone for work too often, need to visit websites and read emails unfortunately. Although that could make the challenge more interesting haha
@aChairLeg Actually it might be a worthy tradeoff from what I have been hearing.
I ran into a video talking about going without music or listening to stuff as we tend to always be doing, it’s funny to think how overly connected we are and reliant on being entertained or constantly out of the moment with media. (I was so guilty about this at work today totally not listening to your videos).
That aside, the idea is the brain can be in the moment, and process thoughts and what you have learned, creating that ability to have shower "ah-ha!" thoughts if you will. I think there is something to this, boosting creativity and productivity overall, and I bet it is healthier to live in the moment and pay attention to the little details of the world around you.
The idea of maybe going phoneless is this but amped up, cutting distractions out, and enabling you to perform at a better rate.
I noticed the days I kept my phone out of my face at work, I had somewhat of a kick-ass day, but for some reason I keep going back to my addiction. Granted I have ADHD to make it that much more "fun", but I intend to try this out a bit more.
Maybe I’ll have to do it and make my own video on it, especially in this day and age where it is increasingly becoming the normal to do things we never did for centuries, we are the guinea pigs with this technology, surrounded by companies making a lot of money off of our attention, depression is prevalent, people are more lonely than ever, and we clutch this technology tighter when we should probably be letting go to a degree.
A baby step to this is gutting or 100% avoiding all apps on your phone for entertainment and social media, maybe try this for a week and see what happens. You can also drive in silence, eat in silence, and work in silence, essentially cutting out everything except work, avoiding looking at your phone when in line or in public, and then on personal time, maybe a small burst to check in on things. Id be very curious to see how it goes for you.
Very off the wall thing to ask a random CZcamsr, but being in the tech space, it is more relevant than ever. Also, your humor is great, it would make for a fun experience.
@@ApolloTheDerg That's a very interesting point on still having it, just using it less. I've deleted almost every app on my phone besides email apps, banking apps, work stuff, youtube, (can't help it) YT studio, instagram, and threads. The last three at this point are kind of getting to the point of work for me. I've started to work with less music/podcasts, but sometimes I just can't focus without it. I'll throw the idea into my list though, and we'll see what comes of it.
I also hated an LG phone I used to own.

If you do switch to an iPhone, you can expect to get a decade of support. They just stopped supporting the 6s like a year ago.
As much as I hate iphones, I think I might hate switching to new phones every 2-3 years more. We'll see.
@@aChairLeg If you use your phone for not a lot, then an iphone may be better, since it has sensible defaults for the most part, and has some security features, at least more than what google gets you.
in fact Apple is ahead of the game in terms of default security, since apps can't track your or use targeted ads without your permission.
and almost every app is uninstallable except for a few of them.
I used to actually really hate apple, but then I got an M1 macbook and got to try an ipad (an older one that is still supported mind you) and that completely changed my perception of apple

Was with you in agreement on your rants til the end. You're already flashing custom ROMs and can still get updates. Even if you didnt, theres an extemely small chance some security breach shit would happen to your phone. Im on a 7 year old phone on stock Oreo with no more security updates and an unlocked bootloader. I dont lose sleep over it.
Agreed. Reviewers don't look at their phones like "regular" people. Most people that use androids don't even know what phone they have beyond the brand. They just want something that can take pictures, get on social media, and send texts/calls. OS updates are great, but only if you care about new features.
Buy a new phone, with at least 5 years of usage in mind. Specs that'll not obsolete within that 5 years, maintainability i.e. disassembly process and how hard to replace parts and finally, parts availability and price.
Only iPhone delivers on that then.

OS and security updates on a phone are overrated. I still have phones running android 9, albeit not as my daily-driver, and those phones have also stopped getting security updates years ago. All the apps still run fine, and no, no one has hacked into my bank or email accounts! The 4a will happily function flawlessly for at least another couple of years for the majority of users.
i still use my Oneplus 3T on daily basis running android 9 with no problem but the battery barely last a day. i'm determined to to find the limits of this phone 😂
