      I use Adobe products so I will have to give this a try in InDesign. Great video.

      What about the interior? Is KDP Profitable anymore?

      Thanks for watching! I'll be doing a similar tutorial for Photoshop next week, so if you use Adobe products you might find that useful!

      I create my interiors in InDesign, but Publisher is best for the Affinity Suite. And YES, KDP is still profitable!

    I just got Affinity Publisher and Photo and wondered if Designer would be better for creating covers. After watching this video, I believe it is. Thank you so much for this tutorial. It's amazing that you're willing to generously share your knowledge with others, since basically you're helping future competitors for LC publishing. :)

    Extremely HELPFUL! I just bought the A. Designer and the A Publisher but since I have no design experience I was so lost. This at least gives me a way to start.

    Beautiful cover! Thanks for showing how to do the repeat patterns. I haven't used that yet for any of my covers, but will now.
    When I export I always select "Press Ready", so that is an option that works also.

    Thanks for this video Rachel. I love your videos on Affinity! I just did my first repeating pattern. I am a beginner and sometimes you went too fast and I couldn't see how you did something, particularly with the changing color bit. Your screen looked different to mine. It would be helpful if you could show how to find everything from the drop down. Mind you, my skill level in using the Affinity Suite is to use the export feature to change from a pdf to a png!

    Hi Rachel
    I wanted to ask you if just overlaying text on a pattern would meet Creative Fabrica's license requirements? As for their Basic POD, it states to "Create and upload crafts and graphics to POD sites that are vastly different from the original. "

  • @Widescenes

    Great tips Rachel. Just wondering whether you need to add a white box on top of the design for the barcode.

    • @RachelHarrisonSund
      @RachelHarrisonSund  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for watching! No, you don't need to add anything for the barcode, as that will be placed by KDP. Just ensure you use the KDP cover templates to ensure you don't place any important information over top of where the barcode will be placed.

    Hi Rachel, I love the video it was just what I needed but I think I'm doing something wrong. I can still see the lines between my patterns and I have the snapping on and set to all the same presets you had on in the video. I wonder if you could help me with what I could be doing wrong. Thanks

    Hi Rachel, there are some differences in Affinity 2 - the symbols box has now moved to the 'Window" drop-down. However I just double-clicked after selecting "create" but there is no selection, I can't seem to find the resolve, HELP? this is at around 9.08 mins. thank you

    • @RachelHarrisonSund

    Hi there, would you recommend affinity designer or photo for designing kdp covers? Both are on sale right now and I'm not sure which to go for. They both seem to have a lot of similar features. Although both are cheap enough to grab both while the sale is on. Thank for the video. Helpful as always. Cheers

    • @RachelHarrisonSund
      @RachelHarrisonSund  Před 4 lety

      Just as BushcraftingNL says, I'd recommend Designer over Photo. Photo is not meant for vector editing, so it will be limited for this type of design work.

  • @HirwaMugabe
    @HirwaMugabe Před 4 lety +2

    Hi Rachel, is there a reason you stopped using depositphotos for your vectors and assets? At first glance their licence seems very good for KDP too.

    • @RachelHarrisonSund
      @RachelHarrisonSund  Před 4 lety

      Hi Hirwa, mainly because of the quality and variety of the images on Creative Fabrica.

  • @aleksandraaczek1830
    @aleksandraaczek1830 Před 4 lety

    You touched on briefly about the image license and that it has to allow for commercial use. What about fonts? I assume it's similar, in that it is not ok to just use the fonts pre-installed on your computer or found anywhere on the web. Would Google fonts be ok to use? What kind of license should I be looking for?

    • @surfsusan
      @surfsusan Před 4 lety +2

      As for Google Fonts developers.google.com/fonts . You will look for commercial license. If you are on a website where the license is not stated, don't download from there. www.fontsquirrel.com is where I get my fonts - legit and free fonts.

    Wouldn't it be easier to just drag the whole image to fill in the template instead of copy and pasting sections together?

  • @tinochill

    Hey Rachel, I can use all these with Affinity Publisher right? Whats the advantage of Designer for KDP? I am asking because I only have Publisher :)

    • @RachelHarrisonSund
      @RachelHarrisonSund  Před 4 lety +1

      I believe you can do all of this in Publisher as well, although I'm unsure if you can create editable symbols as I did in this video.

    • @annabellak.2864
      @annabellak.2864 Před 3 lety +1

      The Symbols feature is only available in Designer, but the rest you can do in Publisher. Before I bought Designer, I used linked images as a kind of workaround, as they get updated when the source file is edited.

  • @Drathaar01
    @Drathaar01 Před 4 lety +1

    I use the guides and put them on all the pink borders. That way I know where all the edges are when I put my background down. Once I have my guides set, I delete the template. I don't need it anymore.

  • @CrowningSuccess

    Rachel...I'm in your private course group. Do I get the Affinity Designer or the Affinity Publisher? I see you using both in some videos so confused as to which one will be more useful for interiors and cover design? I don't want to buy one and discover I should have bought the other of the two...what's the difference? Thanks so much for clarifying.

    • @RachelHarrisonSund
      @RachelHarrisonSund  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi! I recommend Publisher if you're going to buy just one. This has everything you need to produce high quality covers and interiors. You can even do some vector editing.
      Designer is specifically for vector editing. It's great if you want to create your own vector artwork or do heaving vector editing. But it's not necessary.

    • @CrowningSuccess
      @CrowningSuccess Před 4 lety

      Rachel Harrison-Sund Awesome...thanks so much. I probably should have asked in the group for everyone to know, but I was watching you here and didn't want to forget to ask again. Haha Can you do some more detailed videos for our group on using affinity publisher? Thanks again...have a wonderful evening.

    I have noticed that with some patterns you see a faint line at the joint of the 2 patterns. Is there any way to get rid of this?

    • @thereliablemarketer
      @thereliablemarketer Před 4 lety +2

      Since making up some more I think I've discovered the cause of this. I think it is caused by starting the initial image placement not right into the top left corner.

    • @RachelHarrisonSund
      @RachelHarrisonSund  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Dave, this might be a matter of how things are being displayed. Can you still see the seams when you zoom in all the way? If so, check to ensure that your snapping function is turned on and be sure to watch the tiles snap together when placing them. You can also try printing your cover out to see if the seams are visible when printed. If not, it may just be how things are displaying.
