windowl lintels rust inside（the side under the bricks）way more than just outside that you can visibly see! if you just sand and paint outside of metal lintel, it can't help to stop the cracks(cause by rust)from the wall to getting worse.

Mask couple of feet , so it wouldn't overspray on the brick.

They make paint that stops rust (it's a primer) no grinding just scrape and paint.
